    The objective of this work is to make a first approximation to the construction of the representations of royal masculinity and its link with the Spanish national identity through the figure of the monarch Alfonso XII de Borbón in a political context in which the restored monarchy needed to remodel its imaginary and its instruments of legitimation and public projection. Through archival sources, press and iconographic representations, we analyze the main strategies and images that articulated a model of masculinity which transcended his own person to be identified with monarchy and national identity.El objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una primera aproximación a la construcción de las representaciones de la masculinidad regia y su vinculación con la identidad nacional española a través de la figura del monarca Alfonso XII de Borbón en un contexto político en el que la monarquía restaurada precisaba remodelar su imaginario y sus instrumentos de legitimación y proyección pública.     Genetic Variability of Mountain Pine (Pinus hartwegii Lindl) in the Protection of Flora and Fauna Area Nevado de Toluca

    Mountain pine (Pinus hartwegii Lindl) is one of the most abundant conifers in the Protection of Flora and Fauna Area Nevado de Toluca in central Mexico; this natural protected area is threatened by urbanization; this has been manifested in forest health; there has been an increase in forest parasites like bark beetles and dwarf mistletoes, making necessary improve forest management and conservation, hence our objective was to study the genetic diversity of mountain pine under the attack of parasites and to generate information that could be used to improve strategies of conservation of these forests. We classified sampled trees into four categories according to the type of parasite present in a tree (bark beetle: BB; dwarf mistletoe: DM; bark beetle and dwarf mistletoe: BM and non-attacked trees or healthy trees: HT). Genetic diversity was low in comparison with other pine species, but we observed an interesting issue: trees attacked by bark beetle and dwarf mistletoe had higher levels of heterozygosis: Henc = 0.1924 and Henc = 0.1993, respectively. These results suggest that trees with bark beetle and dwarf mistletoes may have higher genetic variability and are a highly valuable genetic resource for mountain pine

    Development and analysis of a 50-year high-resolution daily gridded precipitation dataset over Spain (Spain02)

    In this paper, we present a new publicly available high-resolution daily precipitation gridded dataset developed for peninsular Spain and the Balearic islands using 2756 quality-controlled stations (this dataset is referred to as Spain02 ). The grid has a regular 0.2° (approx. 20 km) horizontal resolution and spans the period from 1950 to 2003. Different interpolation methods were tested using a cross-validation approach to compare the resulting interpolated values against station data: kriging, angular distance weighting, and thin plane splines. Finally, the grid was produced applying the kriging method in a two-step process. First, the occurrence was interpolated using a binary kriging and, in a second step, the amounts were interpolated by applying ordinary kriging to the occurrence outcomes. This procedure is similar to the interpolation method used to generate the E-OBS gridded data – the state-of-the-art publicly available high-resolution daily dataset for Europe – which was used in this study for comparison purposes. Climatological statistics and extreme value indicators from the resulting grid were compared to those from the 25 km E-OBS dataset using the observed station records as a reference. Spain02 faithfully reproduces climatological features such as annual precipitation occurrence, accumulated amounts and variability, whereas E-OBS has some deficiencies in the southern region. When focusing on upper percentiles and other indicators of extreme precipitation regimes, Spain02 accurately reproduces the amount and spatial distribution of the observed extreme indicators, whereas E-OBS data present serious limitations over Spain due to the sparse data used in this region. As extreme values are more sensitive to interpolation, the dense station coverage of this new data set was crucial to get an accurate reproduction of the extremes

    From Olive Fruits to Olive Oil: Phenolic Compound Transfer in Six Different Olive Cultivars Grown under the Same Agronomical Conditions

    Phenolic compounds are responsible of the nutritional and sensory quality of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO). The composition of phenolic compounds in EVOO is related to the initial content of phenolic compounds in the olive-fruit tissues and the activity of enzymes acting on these compounds during the industrial process to produce the oil. In this work, the phenolic composition was studied in six major cultivars grown in the same orchard under the same agronomical and environmental conditions in an effort to test the effects of cultivars on phenolic composition in fruits and oils as well as on transfer between matrices. The phenolic fractions were identified and quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry. A total of 33 phenolic compounds were determined in the fruit samples and a total of 20 compounds in their corresponding oils. Qualitative and quantitative differences in phenolic composition were found among cultivars in both matrices, as well as regarding the transfer rate of phenolic compounds from fruits to oil. The results also varied according to the different phenolic groups evaluated, with secoiridoids registering the highest transfer rates from fruits to oils. Moreover, wide-ranging differences have been noticed between cultivars for the transfer rates of secoiridoids (4.36%–65.63% of total transfer rate) and for flavonoids (0.18%–0.67% of total transfer rate). ‘Picual’ was the cultivar that transferred secoiridoids to oil at the highest rate, whereas ‘Changlot Real’ was the cultivar that transferred flavonoids at the highest rates instead.     Can gridded data represent extreme precipitation events?

    Póster presentado en: 11IMSC - International Meeting on Statistical Climatology celebrado del 12 al 16 de Julio de 2010 en EdimburgoThe analysis and characterization of extreme precipitation at regional scale requires data at high temporal and spatial resolution due to the abrupt variations of this variable in time and space. In recent years there has been an increasing demand for comprehensive regular high-resolution (both in time and space) gridded datasets from different sectors, including hydrology, agriculture and health which are severely affected by extreme events. One of the main shortcomings of gridded datasets is that extreme events can be smoothed during the interpolation process. Heavy rainfall events can be very local and, hence, interpolation with neighboring stations may lead to an underestimation of the precipitation amounts. In this work we study the capability of a high-resolution daily precipitation gridded dataset over Spain (we refer to this dataset as Spain02, Herrera et al 2010) to characterize extreme precipitation. A dense network of 2756 quality-controlled stations was selected to develop the Spain02 grid with a regular 0.2º horizontal resolution covering the period from 1950 to 2003. We study both upper percentiles and the extreme indicators commonly used to characterize extreme precipitation regimes. We also show the performance of the gridded dataset to capture both the intensity and the spatial structure of severe precipitation episodes which constitute characteristic ephemerides of extreme weather in the Iberian peninsula. The results are compared to the 25 Km E-OBS grid (Haylock et al 2008) developed in the ENSEMBLES project, which is the best daily dataset for the whole Europe to date

    The role of serum biomarkers in the diagnosis and prognosis of oral cancer: a systematic review

    Introduction: Oral cancer is one of the causes of major morbidity and mortality in the world although incidence varies in the different geographical locations and races. Advances in molecular biology and cancer research have allowed elucidating serum biomarkers to improve diagnostic methods. The aim of this article systematic review is to highlight the utility and clinical value of serum biomarkers in the diagnosis and prognosis of oral cancer. Material and Methods: A systematic literature review using PubMed (MEDLINE databases) revealed a total of 140 articles related to this topic. Of those articles, 29 were included in the final review. We included articles published in English in the last five years, developed in human as cases and controls studies, retrospective or prospective studies and specific studies that analyzed a certain biomarker in serum. Results: All of the studies include in this systematic review found significant differences in patients. Of those articles included, 2 used biomarkers to determinate cancerous phenotype, 11 mentioned their results were associated with worse prognosis and overall survival, 4 correlated biomarker concentration to clinical stages, 4 concluded it could be a helpful in diagnosis and 8 studies did not find a clear utility of the analysed biomarker. Due to differences in the presentation of data, meta-analysis was not possible. Conclusions: Biomarker use for diagnosis and prognosis is supported by clinical and scientific evidence is relevant. Nevertheless, after selecting a certain biomarker, monitoring protocols should be established in oral and maxillofacial surgeons teams so as we have a correct understanding of biological values

    P-type Semiconducting Polymers as Photocathodes: A Comparative Study for Optobioelectronics

    Recent studies have shown that p-type polymeric semiconductors enable a new type of wireless, optically triggered interface with cells and tissues. Poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) has already been used to create such optobioelectronic interfaces, producing reactive oxygen species and hydrogen peroxide that act as messengers in biological systems to impact cell signaling and proliferation. However, the use of P3HT in biomedical in-vivo applications is limited as its optical absorption does not match the tissue transparency window. This paper compares the performance of P3HT with two low band-gap polymers commonly employed in high-performance organic solar cells, namely Poly[[4,8-bis[5-(2-ethylhexyl)-2-thienyl]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene-2,6-diyl]-2,5-thiophenediyl[5,7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4,8-dioxo-4H,8H-benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c′]dithiophene-1,3-diyl]] (PBDB-T) and Poly({4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene-2,6-diyl}{3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b] thiophenediyl}) (PTB7). Their photogeneration capabilities are quantified in physiological-like conditions through photocurrent analysis and a hydrogen peroxide assay, finding a superior photocurrent generation and a better H2O2 photogeneration yield in PTB7 as compared to the other two polymers. Spectroscopic and structural investigations are used to compare such differences by comparing their energy levels at the electrochemical interface and their morphologies. Finally, biocompatibility is tested both in dark and illuminated conditions and effective in-vitro intracellular ROS production is demonstrated. These findings provide insight into the physico-chemical properties crucial for the development of novel, less invasive, optically operated bioelectronic interfaces

    Analysis of substrate specificity of cytochrome P450 monooxygenases involved in trichothecene toxin biosynthesis

    [EN]Trichothecenes are a structurally diverse family of toxic secondary metabolites produced by certain species of multiple fungal genera. All trichothecene analogs share a core 12,13-epoxytrichothec-9-ene (EPT) structure but differ in presence, absence and types of substituents attached to various positions of EPT. Formation of some of the structural diversity begins early in the biosynthetic pathway such that some producing species have few trichothecene biosynthetic intermediates in common. Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) play critical roles in formation of trichothecene structural diversity. Within some species, relaxed substrate specificities of P450s allow individual orthologs of the enzymes to modify multiple trichothecene biosynthetic intermediates. It is not clear, however, whether the relaxed specificity extends to biosynthetic intermediates that are not produced by the species in which the orthologs originate. To address this knowledge gap, we used a mutant complementation-heterologous expression analysis to assess whether orthologs of three trichothecene biosynthetic P450s (TRI11, TRI13 and TRI22) from Fusarium sporotrichioides, Trichoderma arundinaceum, and Paramyrothecium roridum can modify trichothecene biosynthetic intermediates that they do not encounter in the organism in which they originated. The results indicate that TRI13 and TRI22 could not modify the intermediates that they do not normally encounter, whereas TRI11 could modify an intermediate that it does not normally encounter. These findings indicate that substrate promiscuity varies among trichothecene biosynthetic P450s.
