Modelling temperature dependence in the Arabidopsis thaliana circadian clock

    Get PDF
The circadian clock is the mechanism responsible for generating and controlling the biological rhythms that occur with 24 h periodicity in most living organisms. This clock allows organisms to anticipate the environmental variation caused by the rotation of the Earth such as the daily light and temperature cycles, providing them adaptive advantages. The circadian clock is a complex network of genes interacting with each other in regulatory processes which have been represented by mathematical models. In the plant Arabidopsis thaliana, the mechanisms by which light regulates the circadian clock have been widely modelled mathematically and implemented computationally permitting to explain experimental observations and to generate hypotheses, which have led experimental investigation. However, the role of temperature and the mechanisms of adaptation to temperature variation are poorly understood, and especially in the scenario of global climate change, modelling a temperature responsive plant clock is of increasing importance. Here we present a framework of temperature dependence for the Arabidopsis circadian clock by applying Arrhenius equations to the most predominant models for the plant system and we additionally propose three minimal models via random parameterisations to explore design principles underlying temperature compensation. By numerical investigation, we conclude that temperature compensation is especially sensitive to degradation processes, and that the combined effect of light and temperature favors the robustness of the clock. We also propose to analyse the plant clock as a whole system and under that perspective we suggest that context graph-theoretic approaches could be a powerful tool to uncover the design principles for temperature mechanisms

Turning teachers into entrepreneurship role models: development of a measurement scale of useful characteristics

    Get PDF
The circumstances under which students consider their teachers of entrepreneurship as role models have not received in-depth exploration in the literature. This paper focuses on determining the main personal, professional and pedagogical characteristics that would turn teachers of entrepreneurship into role models and thereby improve the entrepreneurial intentions of students. A three-step empirical research process combining documentary, qualitative and quantitative methods is developed in order to propose and test a measurement scale of teacher characteristics that is reliable, valid and useful for causal modelling. A total of 26 characteristics are identified and classified into personal, professional and pedagogical categories

Monitoring and analyzing exoplanetary transits from Argentina

    Get PDF
Photometric observations of transits can be used to derive physical and orbital parameters of the system, like the planetary and stellar radius, orbital inclination and mean density of the star. Furthermore, monitoring possible periodic variations in transit timing of planets is important, since small changes can be caused by the presence of other planets or moons in the system. On the other hand, long term changes in the transit length can be due to the orbital precession of the planets. For these reasons we started an observational program dedicated to observe transits of known exoplanets with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of these planetary systems. In this work we present our first results obtained using the observational facilities in Argentina including the 2.15 telescope at CASLEO.Instituto de Astrofísica de La PlataFacultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica

In this work one presents an investigation (research) of educational character that has as aim(lens) interpret the skills of the social thought that develop in a didactic offer of education and learning of the topic of the cultural diversity; with the support of educational videoes, from this the following question of investigation(research) arises: what skills of social thought are identified in the processes of education and learning of the concept of cultural diversity, supported by the educational videoes in the students of third degree of the educational institution Jaime Salazar Robledo?. The investigation(research) is based on the interpretive approach where partner claims develop the social and educational reality of the education and learning of the social sciences, supported from a model - constructivist, who understands that from the interaction of the subjects in the social and cultural contexts of the education and learning; where it(he, she) seeks to help the students to transform the new information, this transformation happens across the creation of new learning’s and this ensues from the emergence of new cognitive structures that allow to face equal or similar situations in the reality. The aim (lens) of the investigation (research) tries to interpret the skills of the social thought identified in the didactic offer of education and learning from the concept of cultural diversity. The methodological structure that is used is the study of simple case where there is had a clear physical, social and temporary limit that awards the entity (yin 2004). With this one tries to interpret the skills of the social thought that are executed in the planning of the didactic unit and the educational practice, helped by the educational video. According to The obtained results, the educational video turns into a technological tool, to support the problematic ones that explicit the topic of the cultural diversity and the sub subjects that of there of detach as the racism, which is a protagonist in the company(society); where there are included the skills of the social thought planned by the teacher. They were the skills of description, explanation, interpretation and argumentation, which have particularities as (like): the description and the explanation are the skills most emphasized in the executed process, and the interpretation and argumentation are the skills that there has the third and fourth position (place) of appearance, being these two the skills least emphasized in the performance(discharge) of the execution

MemoMarote: a working memory training game

Mate Marote is a flexible framework for large-scale educational interventions that include games developed, based on aspects from cognitive sciences as an effective way of learning. MemoMarote is a computer game designed for training working memory. The pilot study of this platform was an intervention in La Rioja province (Argentina). In this article we analyze the registered statistics of use of the unsupervised version of the game. We found that playing activity had a peak when recently installed, decreasing during the first year and observing an increase when starting school classes in 2013. Analyzing the usage statistics we observed that players have a poor performance, with more incorrect answers than correct ones. These results suggest that children did not read instructions or they were not understood, and so they played the game incorrectly. We plan the creation of an interactive tutorial to increase the understanding of the game.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ

HIV-1 infection through vertical transmission provides a good model to evaluate intra-host viral evolution and allows to gain insight into the dynamics of viral populations. Our aim was to assess the diversity and dynamics of X4- and R5-using HIV-1 variants in vertically infected children who presented a switch in SI/ NSI phenotype in MT-2 cell assays during chronic infection. Through molecular cloning and next generation sequencing of the C2-V5 env fragment, we investigated HIV-1 evolution and co-receptor usage based on V3 loop prediction bioinformatic tools of longitudinal samples obtained from 4 children. In all cases, the phylogenetic relationships were assessed by Maximum-Likelihood trees constructed with MEGA 6.0. In two cases, V3 loop sequences predicted exclusively R5-using and or X4-using strains, while in another two a higher degree of concordance was observed between the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics. In 3 of the 4 cases, C2-V5 env sequences from different time points were intermingled in phylogenetic trees, with no segregation neither by time or tropism. In only one case monophyletic clustering defined groups of sequences with different co-receptor usage. Comparison of amino acid frequency between isolates with SI and NSI phenotype allowed the identification of 9 possible genetic determinants in subtype F C2-V5 region of env associated to SI/ NSI phenotype in these patients, one of which had previously been reported for subtype B. Overall, we found a low degree of correlation between phenotypic and genotypic properties of HIV-1 quasispecies in patients under chronic infection. Whether HIV-1 subtype or other factors influence the evolution of HIV-1 in vivo will require further research.Fil: Fernández, María Florencia. Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires.
