    Predator trophic guild assignment : the importance of the method of diet quantification

    We quantitatively assessed the effect of three Methods of Diet Quantification (MDQ) (based on frequency of occurrence of prey, dry weight of prey remains, or estimation of fresh biomass ingested) on guild classification of three carnivores species based on five data sets. Diet dissimilarity matrices and recognition of trophic guilds were dependent on MDQ. Bath omnivorous (Red Fox, Vulpes vulpes, and Eurasian Badger, Meles meles) shifted to different trophic guilds depending of the MDQ chosen, whereas Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) remained consistently in the rabbit-eating guild. As a way to assess the pervasiveness of inconsistencies in guild classification, we applied our approach to six other predator assemblages. The number of recognized guilds shifted as a result of MDQ in 4 of 6 comparisons, changes in guild membership occurred in ali assemblages, and mean percentage of guildmate fidelity was only 30 % ( l SD = ± 2 1 , n = 6). The choice of MDQ depends on the specifie ecological question to be addressed with the data. When investigators focus on the effects of prey on predators, an estimate of biomass ingested seems the best choice, but when the focus is on the effects of predators on prey, an approach based on prey numbers is more appropiateNous avons évalué les effets respectifs de trois méthodes de quantification des régimes alimentaires (MQRA), basées sur la fréquence d'occurrence des proies, le poids sec des restes de proies et l'estimation de la biomasse fraîche ingérée, sur la classification en guildes de trois espèces de carnivores et sur la base de cinq jeux de données. Les matrices de dissemblance des régimes et la détermination des guildes dépendent de la MQRA choisie. Les deux omnivores (le Renard roux Vulpes vulpes et le Blaireau européen Meles meles) changeaint de guilde selon la MQRA alors que le Lynx pardelle (Lynx pardinus) restait constamment dans la guilde des consommateurs de lapins. Afin de vérifier la généralité de ces incohérences dans la détermination des guildes, nous avons analysé de la même façon six autres communautés de prédateurs. Selon la MQRA retenue, le nombre de guildes reconnues s'est modifié dans quatre des six comparaisons, des changements dans la composition des guildes se sont produits dans tous les cas et le degré moyen de constance dans une guilde n'a été que de 30 ± 21 % (n = 6). Le choix de la MQRA dépend de la question écologique posée en préalable à l'analyse des données. Quand le but est d'étudier l'effet des proies sur leurs prédateurs, une estimation de la biomasse consommée semble être le meilleur choix ; en revanche, quand il s'agit d'appréhender les effets des prédateurs sur leurs proies, l'approche basée sur le nombre de proies est alors la plus appropriée

    Spatial isolation impacts pollinator visitation and reproductive success of a threatened self-incompatible Mediterranean tree

    Pollination service is crucial to achieve successful plant sexual reproduction and long-term population persistence. This pollination service can be affected by plant conspecific density and also by intrinsic features of individuals related to their flowering phenology and floral display. However, studies examining intrinsic and extrinsic traits on pollinator visitation and reproductive success of Mediterranean trees with limited reproduction are still scarce. We analyzed the effects of plant isolation, flowering phenology, flower weight and tree size on flower visitation probability, flowering patch visitation probability, fruit set and crop size. To this end, we intensively monitored pollinator visitation and fruit production of 67 (in 2019) and 73 (in 2020) Pyrus bourgaeana Decne trees within a threatened Mediterranean population. Our results revealed that isolated individuals received more pollinators than those on conspecific aggregations, suggesting intraspecific competition for pollinators in dense flowering neighborhoods. However, fruit set was higher in trees close to flowering conspecifics despite having fewer visits from pollinators, suggesting pollen limitation but not pollinator limitation in spatially isolated trees. Interestingly, we found increased crop sizes in spatially isolated trees which could be related to reduced intraspecific competition for resources in low-density neighborhoods (water, nutrients) and/or to higher reproductive investment (i.e. higher flower production). Overall, our results indicated pollen but not pollinator limitation in spatially isolated trees.     Reunion overseas: introduced wild boars and cultivated orange trees interact in the Brazilian Atlantic forest

    Little is known concerning novel interactions between species that typically interact in their native range but, as a consequence of human activity, are also interacting out of their original distribution under new ecological conditions. Objective: We investigate the interaction between the orange tree and wild boar, both of which share Asian origins and have been introduced to the Americas (i.e. the overseas). Methods: Specifically, we assessed whether i) wild boars consume orange (Citrus sinensis) fruits and seeds in orchards adjacent to a remnant of the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, ii) the orange seeds are viable after passing through boar’s digestive tract and iii) whether the orange tree may naturalise in the forest remnant assisted by wild boars. Results: Our camera surveys indicated that wild boar was by far the most frequent consumer of orange fruits (40.5 % of camera trap-days). A considerable proportion of sown orange seeds extracted from fresh boar feces emerged seedlings (27.8 %, N = 386) under controlled greenhouse conditions. Further, 37.6 % of sown seeds (N = 500) in the forest remnant emerged seedlings in July 2015; however, after ~4 years (March 2019) only 9 seedlings survived (i.e. 4.8 %, N = 188). Finally, 52 sweet orange seedlings were found during surveys within the forest remnant which is intensively used by wild boars. This study indicates a high potential of boars to act as effective seed dispersers of the sweet orange. However, harsh competition with native vegetation and the incidence of lethal diseases, which quickly kill sweet orange trees under non-agricultural conditions, could seriously limit orange tree establishment in the forest.     Long-term effect of temperature and precipitation on radial growth in a threatened thermo-Mediterranean tree population

    The combined effect of climate change and habitat destruction and fragmentation threatens many plant populations and even entire communities in Mediterranean ecosystems. The Iberian pear, Pyrus bourgaeana Decne, a characteristic species of Mediterranean ecosystems, is threatened by both habitat and climate changes. We ask whether and how the growth of mature P. bourgaeana in the thermo-Mediterranean zone (i.e., altitude <700 m) has been affected by long-term climate changes during the last century in a fragmented landscape. Dendrochronological methods were used to find growth–climate relationships. We made the first dendroclimatological analyses and constructed a first 103-year tree-ring chronology (1905–2007) of this species. The tree-ring series revealed large growth variability. We found a clear, strong relationship between tree growth and climate, with annual precipitation being the most important climate factor enhancing radial growth. Our results also showed that warm autumns and winters positively affect growth. There was no temporal stability in the relationship between tree growth and climate. The most general trend was in the relationship between annual precipitation and tree growth: the decrease of rainfall in the last decades of the twentieth century was associated with a constant increase of the correlation coefficient. Water accumulated in the soil in autumn and winter proved to be a key factor augmenting tree growth in the following vegetation period. The climate–growth relationship in P. bourgaeana has strengthened in recent decades apparently due to decreased precipitation levels.Peer reviewe

    Frugivoría y dispersión de semillas por mamíferos carnívoros: rasgos funcionales

    Muchas especies de mamíferos carnívoros (Orden Carnivora) consumen frutos carnosos, transportan semillas en sus tractos digestivos y las defecan sin dañarlas en condiciones apropiadas para la germinación. En este artículo, revisamos el conocimiento adquirido sobre este mutualismo en las últimas tres décadas, desde que tres trabajos pioneros revelaron la importancia de los carnívoros como dispersores de semillas en ecosistemas templados. Nos centramos en los rasgos funcionales de los carnívoros consumiendo frutos y diseminando semillas, haciendo especial énfasis en sus diferencias con las aves, el principal grupo de vertebrados frugívoros en ecosistemas templados. Los carnívoros no están sujetos a las restricciones fenológicas o morfológicas que típicamente limitan el consumo de determinados frutos en muchas especies de aves. Consumen preferentemente frutos cuyos atributos son compartidos con muchas especies de frutos cultivados por el hombre, lo que explica el consumo frecuente de éstos en paisajes antrópicos. Sus amplios requerimientos espaciales favorecen la dispersión de semillas a larga distancia, mientras que su generalismo en relación al hábitat favorece el flujo de semillas entre hábitats contrastados. De este modo, los carnívoros promueven la conectividad entre poblaciones vegetales y la colonización. Estas funciones ecológicas son clave para las comunidades vegetales nativas, especialmente en escenarios de cambios de uso de suelo. Sin embargo, estos patrones de dispersión de semillas pueden contribuir a la invasión de plantas exóticas. Aún ignoramos en gran medida el papel de los carnívoros en términos cuantitativos de la dispersión de semillas y las diferencias funcionales entre especies dentro del gremio. La integración de muestreos clásicos e innovadoras técnicas moleculares y de análisis espacial promete aportar conocimiento inédito en estas cuestiones[EN ] Many species of carnivorous mammals (Order Carnivora) consume fleshy fruits, transport seeds in their digestive tracts, and defecate them without damage in conditions that are suitable for germination. In this article, we review the state of the art on this mutualism in the past three decades, since three pioneering studies revealed the importance of carnivores as seed dispersers in temperate ecosystems. We focus on the functional traits of carnivores consuming fruits and disseminating seeds, with particular emphasis on their differences with birds, the main group of vertebrate frugivores in temperate ecosystems. Carnivores are not subject to the phenological or morphological constraints that typically limit the consumption of certain fruit species in many bird species. They preferably consume fruits whose traits are shared with many fruit species cultivated by man, which explains the frequent consumption of cultivated fruits in anthropogenic landscapes. The large spatial requirements of carnivores promote long-distance seed dispersal, while their habitat generalism promotes seed flows between contrasting habitats. Thus, carnivores promote connectivity between plant populations and colonization. These are key ecological functions for native plant communities, especially in scenarios of land-use changes. However, these seed dispersal patterns can contribute to the invasion of exotic plants. We still largely ignore the role of carnivores in quantitative terms of seed dispersal and the functional differences between species within the guild.     Too Many Is Too Bad: Long-Term Net Negative Effects of High Density Ungulate Populations on a Dominant Mediterranean Shrub

    Plant–animal interactions imply costs and benefits with net balance depending on interacting species and ecological context. Ungulates, in particular, confer costs (e.g., plant leaf consumption, flower bud predation) and benefits (e.g., plant overcompensation, seed dispersal) to plants. Magnitude of costs and benefits may be altered by habitat management or ecological conditions favoring high density ungulate populations. Little is known however on whether plant costs or benefits predominate over the years, or the long-term outcomes of plant-animal interactions in habitat types sustaining high density ungulate populations. We investigated how high density ungulate populations alter plant costs and benefits by quantifying ungulate long-term effects on the shrub Cistus ladanifer (Cistaceae) individual size, seed weight and number, seed bank, and population density, through a 12-year ungulate exclusion experiment in a Mediterranean scrubland. We monitored plant size and flower buds in plants exposed or protected from ungulates and number of developed capsules and seeds consumed (potential seed dispersal) by ungulates during three reproductive seasons. We found that ungulates negatively affected shrub size and led to a dramatically decline of shrub reproductive structures and seed production, affecting the plant reproductive cycle. Number of buds was 27 times higher and number of developed seed 5 times higher in ungulate-excluded as compared to ungulate-exposed plots. After 9 years of ungulate exclusion, the C. ladanifer seed bank was 2.6 times higher in ungulate-excluded plots. The population density of C. ladanifer was 4 times higher in ungulate-excluded plots. Our long-term experiment showed that high density ungulate populations can alter plant-animal interactions by reducing plant benefits and increasing plant costs.Peer reviewe

    Microgeographical, inter-individual, and intra-individual variation in the flower characters of Iberian pear Pyrus bourgaeana (Rosaceae)

    Flower characteristics have been traditionally considered relatively constant within species. However, there are an increasing number of examples of variation in flower characteristics. In this study, we examined the variation in attracting and rewarding flower characters at several ecological levels in a metapopulation of Pyrus bourgaeana in the Doñana area (SW Spain). We answered the following questions: what are the variances of morphological and nectar characters of flowers? How important are intra-individual and inter-individual variance in flower characters? Are there microgeographical differences in flower characters? And if so, are they consistent between years? In 2008 and 2009, we sampled flowers of 72 trees from five localities. For six flower morphological and two nectar characteristics, we calculated coefficients of variation (CV). The partitioning of total variation among-localities, among-individuals, and within-individuals was estimated. To analyze differences among localities and their consistency between years, we conducted generalized linear mixed models. The CVs of nectar characters were always higher than those of morphological characters. As expected, inter-individual variation was the main source of variation of flower morphology, but nectar characters had significant variation at both intra- and inter-individual levels. For most floral traits, there were no differences among localities. Our study documents that variation is a scale-dependent phenomenon and that it is essential to consider intra- and inter-individual variance when investigating the causes and consequences of variation. It also shows that single year studies of floral characters should be viewed with caution

    Prisoners in Their Habitat? Generalist Dispersal by Habitat Specialists: A Case Study in Southern Water Vole (Arvicola sapidus)

    Habitat specialists inhabiting scarce and scattered habitat patches pose interesting questions related to dispersal such as how specialized terrestrial mammals do to colonize distant patches crossing hostile matrices. We assess dispersal patterns of the southern water vole (Arvicola sapidus), a habitat specialist whose habitat patches are distributed through less than 2% of the study area (overall 600 km2) and whose populations form a dynamic metapopulational network. We predict that individuals will require a high ability to move through the inhospitable matrix in order to avoid genetic and demographic isolations. Genotypes (N = 142) for 10 microsatellites and sequences of the whole mitochondrial Control Region (N = 47) from seven localities revealed a weak but significant genetic structure partially explained by geographic distance. None of the landscape models had a significant effect on genetic structure over that of the Euclidean distance alone and no evidence for efficient barriers to dispersal was found. Contemporary gene flow was not severely limited for A. sapidus as shown by high migration rates estimates (>10%) between non-neighbouring areas. Sex-biased dispersal tests did not support differences in dispersal rates, as shown by similar average axial parent-offspring distances, in close agreement with capture-mark-recapture estimates. As predicted, our results do not support any preferences of the species for specific landscape attributes on their dispersal pathways. Here, we combine field and molecular data to illustrate how a habitat specialist mammal might disperse like a habitat generalist, acquiring specific long-distance dispersal strategies as an adaptation to patchy, naturally fragmented, heterogeneous and unstable habitats

    Pulp feeders alter plant interactions with subsequent animal associates

    Community context can alter the likelihood of interactions among community members and thus exert critical ecological effects with potential evolutionary implications. For instance, plant–animal mutualisms can be exploited by third species that usurp the resources and/or service that the mutualists offer, while delivering limited or no benefits in return. We experimentally revealed for the first time how exploiters of plant–disperser mutualisms (i.e. pulp feeders) alter the frequency of plant interactions with subsequent mutualistic (seed dispersers) and antagonistic (seed predators) animal associates. In doing so, we chose to study the endozoochore Pyrus bourgaeana, which interacts with a diverse assemblage of frugivores including exploiters (pulp-feeding rabbits), legitimate seed dispersers (mammalian carnivores) and seed and fruit predators (rodents and deer, respectively). We hypothesized that pulp feeders would render fruit barely rewarding, affecting subsequent tree–animal interactions. As predicted, pulp removal lessened tree dispersal success (i.e. lowered interaction frequency with seed dispersers) causing an indirect negative effect on its fitness. Furthermore, pulp feeders facilitated foraging by seed-eating rodents, leading to a negative indirect effect on seed survival. Nonetheless, these negative effects of pulp removal on tree fitness were partly counterbalanced by a noticeable decrease in fruit predation by deer. Because both seed dispersers and seed predators preferred large fruits, they exerted selection pressures on fruit size in opposite directions; thus, the net selection regime on fruit size experienced by the tree appeared largely contingent on community composition. Synthesis. Our results illustrate how interactions among functionally distinct frugivores can act synergistically or antagonistically and thus alter their ecological outcomes in ways that differ from those predicted by pairwise interactions. Further research on the relationships between fruiting plants and their consumers will certainly further our understanding of how community context can modify ecological and evolutionary outcomes of complex multispecies interactionsPeer reviewe
