The aim of our study was to evaluate the contralateral acoustic stimulation tests of central auditory system after audiological examination of individuals with normal hearing. In this context, a number of criteria were considered for the determination of individuals with normal hearing. Normal hearing provides the ability to live independently in the social environment of an individual, and the level of hearing is considered necessary for enabling communication with the environment. A total of 15 individuals were included in our study. In all individuals, five different frequencies were obtained compared to the threshold for both ears. The frequencies were 1000 Hz, 1414 Hz, 2000 Hz, 2828 Hz and 4000 Hz; and the suppression thresholds were also measured. After audiological tests were performed for our study, the same measurements were repeated. Looking at the results of the study, a statistically significant difference was found between the measurement results for right and left ears in individuals with normal hearing (P<0.05). Result: In order to see the suppressive effect, the integrity of the neural structures must be preserved starting from the medial nucleus of the superior olivary complex and reaching the OHCs. According to the results obtained in our study, we can conclude that MOCR is active, and the central nervous system is not impaired after the audiological evaluation. However, it is thought that a further study should be conducted with a larger sample group in order to obtain more specific results. Direct Observation of the Faraday Rotation Using Radially-Polarized Twisted Light

A novel experimental technique for the realisation of the optical Faraday effect using Laguerre- Gaussian (LG) light is described. The experiment employs a zero-order vortex half-wave retarder to generate a radially or azimuthally-polarised LG doughnut beam. The light emerging from the retarder then passes through a linear polariser, which gives rise to two intensity lobes, with the orientation of the intensity gap between the two lobes pointing parallel (perpendicular) to the polarization direction of the radially (azimuthally) polarised beam. To complete the Faraday set up, the light traverses a material subject to a magnetic field, before passing through a final linear polariser, which results in a visible rotation of the lobes pattern. This technique exhibits the Faraday effect readily visually, without further elaborate steps to detect changes in the light intensity. The degree of rotation of the plane of polarisation is determined directly by the visibly clear change in the orientation of the intensity gap between the lobes.Comment: 4 figure

Background: Rearrangements that occur mainly through the non-allelic homologous recombination (NAHR) during maternal meiosis in short arms of chromosome 8 is relatively associated with various clinical spectrum.Aim: The objective of this study was to report cytogenetics and molecular characterization of a mental and motor retarded boy with short arm of chromosome 8 rearrangements [invdupdel(8p)] in this current case report. Subjects and methods: We report an 11-year-old boy with scoliosis, intellectual disability, mental-motor retardation and characteristic facial features. Agenesis of corpus callosum was detected with brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) analysis. Derivative chromosome 8 structure was identified after conventional cytogenetics – karyotype analysis, Multiplex Ligation-Dependent Probe Amplification (MLPA) and Microarray-based Comparative Genomic Hybridization (aCGH) techniques. Genotype-phenotype correlation in the current proband case will be discussed. Results: Case was diagnosed as 46, XY, der (8), del (8) (p23.1) invdup (8) (p11.1-p23.1) by using advanced comparable techniques. Subtelomeric MLPA analysis showed deletion of FBXO25 gene which is located at 8p23.3 locus and FISH with subtelomeric probes for 8p shows also only deleted region. The microarray- CGH profilling showed 7,9 mb deletion for 8p23.1 and 31 mb duplication for 8p11.1 locuses. Conclusion: Results from the current case emphasized that the cases with clinical manifestations of such disorders extremely need to be examined by combined comparable genetics techniques such as; karyotyping, FISH, MLPA and chromosomal microarray for the accurate phenotype – genotype correlation. Keywords: Chromosomal rearrangement, Corpus callosum, Invdupdel(8p)Array-CGH, MLP

A rare case with suicide due to akathisia after use of single dose venlafaxine

Akathisia is a movement disorder characterized by an inner sense of unease, unrest and dysphoria.Suicidal behavior related with akathisia in patients is one of serious harmful behaviors and requires rapid intervention. There is limited number of cases about venlafaxine-associated akathisia in the literature, but it is not still yet known exactly what the actual incidence is.Side effects associated with antidepressants should be closely monitored and should be kept in mind without irreversible conditions. In this case report we will conclude about a case in which rapid development of akathisia and suicidal behavior occurs following venlafaxine treatment initiated with a non-psychiatric indication

(Endokrynol Pol 2011; 62 (5): 429–435)Background: Our aim is to identify the relation of leptin, adiponectin and insulin resistance to bone mineral density (BMD) in type 2 diabetic postmenopausal women and compare it with that experienced by nondiabetics. Material and methods: Seventy six postmenopausal female patients were included in the study. Postmenopausal type 2 diabetic (n = 19) and nondiabetic patients (n = 19) with spine and/or hip BMD T score lower than -2 were included in the study, and postmenopausal type 2 diabetic (n = 20) and nondiabetic women (n = 18) with normal BMD (T score > –1) were selected as control groups. Those receiving therapy for osteoporosis, over the age of 65, those who had a disease and were taking a medication that could affect bone metabolism were excluded. Biochemical tests, as well as leptin, adiponectin and insulin levels, were measured and insulin resistance was calculated using the HOMA test. Results: There was no correlation between low BMD and leptin, adiponectin and insulin resistance. There was only a negative correlation between leptin and femur Ward’s triangle BMD. Conclusion: Further large-scale studies must to be performed in order to analyse the effects of leptin, adiponectin and insulin resistance on bone metabolism in type 2 diabetic patients.
