In Chile, higher education policies have required universities to adopt management tools related to the monitoring and quantification of academic work. Accordingly, this paper presents the results of a documentary study of 95 official documents concerning academic work (Regulations, Scholarship and Grant Application Guidelines and Accreditation Application Forms) in order to understand the regulations pertaining to academic work. Discourse analysis was used to determine how these documents are used in the university environment to regulate and transform the academic work. The present study shows that management tools adopted characterize the academic work through actions such as: establish hierarchies among the multiple tasks of a faculty member and among faculty members using criteria that have not been discussed by the academic community; objectify work processes and reach consensus over them, disregarding current disputes and disagreements; omit the context of academic production creating an image of work as an individual process; and finally urge the establishment of individualizing and competitive work relationships.http://ref.scielo.org/d2c4s

Indexación: Scopus.Chile is a landmark case in opening up higher education to the free market and in the reformulation of the logics that regulate scientific production in universities. This translates into a management system for academic staff oriented by productivity bonuses associated with high-impact publications, by the distribution of research funds conditional on the productivity of researchers and by the rank of academic tasks. In this article, we present the results of a study that sought to explore and understand how highly productive social science academics describe scientific writing from everyday labor practice framed in new regulations of scientific production. Through the analysis of 20 interviews, we propose 3 categories: affectivity, fragility and strategy. These give an account of everyday aspects, as well as tensions and conflicts present in the process of scientific writing.https://atheneadigital.net/article/view/v20-1-fardela-carriel-lazcano-et-a

Context. Atmospheric escape plays a fundamental role in shaping the properties of exoplanets. The metastable near-infrared (nIR) helium triplet at 1083.3 nm (He I) is a powerful proxy of extended and evaporating atmospheres. Aims: We used the GIARPS (GIANO-B + HARPS-N) observing mode of the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo to search for He I absorption in the upper atmospheres of five close-in giant planets hosted by the K and M dwarf stars of our sample, namely WASP-69 b, WASP-107 b, HAT-P-11 b, GJ 436 b, and GJ 3470 b. Methods: We focused our analysis on the nIR He I triplet, performing high-resolution transmission spectroscopy by comparing the in-transit and out-of-transit observations. In instances where nightly variability in the He I absorption signal was identified, we investigated the potential influence of stellar magnetic activity on the planetary absorption signal by searching for variations in the Hα transmission spectrum. Results: We spectrally resolve the He I triplet and confirm the published detections for WASP-69 b (3.91 ± 0.22%, 17.6σ), WASP-107 b (8.17−0.76+0.80%, 10.5σ), HAT-P-11 b (1.36 ± 0.17%, 8.0σ), and GJ 3470 b (1.75−0.36+0.39%, 4.7σ). We do not find evidence of extra absorption for GJ 436 b. We observe night-to-night variations in the He I absorption signal for WASP-69 b, associated with variability in Hα, which likely indicates the influence of pseudo-signals related to stellar activity. Additionally, we find that the He I signal of GJ 3470 b originates from a single transit observation, thereby corroborating the discrepancies found in the existing literature. An inspection of the Hα line reveals an absorption signal during the same transit event. Conclusions: By combining our findings with previous analyses of GIANO-B He I measurements of planets orbiting K dwarfs, we explore potential trends with planetary and stellar parameters that are thought to affect the absorption of metastable He I. Our analysis is unable to identify clear patterns, thus emphasising the necessity for additional measurements and the exploration of potential additional parameters that may be important in controlling He I absorption in planetary upper atmospheres

Responding to globalisation: The case of elite artistic gymnastics in China

This paper was accepted for publication in the journal International Review for the Sociology of Sport and the definitive published version is available at https://doi.org/10.1177/1012690217730679.This article explores a non-Western nation’s responses to globalisation through an in-depth analysis of elite artistic gymnastics in China over a lengthy time span. The concept of globalisation and patterns of ‘reach’ and ‘response’ act as the heuristic devices underpinning the analysis. Data were collected from a range of documents and fromand six semi-structured interviews. The trajectory of Chinese elite artistic gymnastics’ responses to globalisation can be characterised as a passive response in the 1950s, a participative response in the first half of the 1960s, a conflictual response from 1966 to the early 1970s, a participative response from the early 1970s to the 2012 Olympic Games, and a passive response, once again, during the Rio Olympiad (post-London 2012). In this way, a nation’s responses to globalisation are seen as dynamic rather than rigid or static. The ever-expanding reach of the international federation-led global system fundamentally demarcates the activities of member states. However, any nation-state has a degree of autonomy when responding to globalisation and in deciding the detailed pathways whereby to pursue success within this system, although in extreme cases, a nation-state can choose to resist this globalising context, largely depending on a government’s attitude towards globalisation and the value the government attaches to it

The angiogenic factor PIGF mediates a neuroimmune interaction in the spleen to allow the onset of hypertension

Hypertension is a health problem affecting over 1 billion people worldwide. How the immune system gets activated under hypertensive stimuli to contribute to blood pressure elevation is a fascinating enigma. Here we showed a splenic role for placental growth factor (PlGF), which accounts for the onset of hypertension, through immune system modulation. PlGF repressed the expression of the protein Timp3 (tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 3), through the transcriptional Sirt1-p53 axis. Timp3 repression allowed costimulation of T cells and their deployment toward classical organs involved in hypertension. We showed that the spleen is an essential organ for the development of hypertension through a noradrenergic drive mediated by the celiac ganglion efferent. Overall, we demonstrate that PlGF mediates the neuroimmune interaction in the spleen, organizing a unique and nonredundant response that allows the onset of hypertension
