    Polycystic ovary syndrome in patients with epilepsy: A study in 102 Chinese women

    AbstractPurposeThe incidence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) increases in women with epilepsy (WWE), which appears to vary with ethnicity. This study was conducted to determine the incidence and risk factors of PCOS in Chinese WWE.MethodsThe study was carried out in 102 of 139 Chinese WWE at reproductive ages, with 32 receiving valproic acid (VPA), 40 receiving other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), and 30 without AEDs therapy. PCOS was defined as having 2 or more of the following components: polycystic ovaries, hyperandrogenism, and amenorrhoea or oligomenorrhoea (a/oligomenorrhoea).ResultsOne or more isolated components of PCOS were found in 56 (54.9%) patients, with 29 (28.4%) having polycystic ovaries, 20 (19.6%) with a/oligomenorrhea, 7 (6.9%) with hyperandrogenism, and 13 (12.7%) with defined PCOS. Their average age at the start of seizure was 13.8±6.5years, younger than that of patients without these disorders (16.9±8.6years, p<0.05). VPA therapy increased the incidence of PCOS (11/32, 34.4%), in addition to increased blood levels of testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) as well as LH to FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) ratio. No significant relationship was found between the incidence of PCOS and the type, duration, or frequency of seizures in these WWE.ConclusionThere is an increased incidence of PCOS in Chinese WWE at reproductive ages, by more than 2 times of that in the general population. Risk factors include seizures starting at a young age and VPA therapy

    Enhancement of polar phases in PVDF by forming PVDF/SiC nanowire composite

    Different contents of silicon carbide (SiC) nanowires were mixed with Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to facilitate the polar phase crystallization. It was shown that the annealing temperature and SiC content affected on the phase and crystalline structures of PVDF/SiC samples. Furthermore, the addition of SiC nanowire enhanced the transformation of non-polar α phase to polar phases and increased the relative fraction of β phase in PVDF. Due to the nucleating agent mechanism of SiC nanowires, the ion-dipole interaction between the negatively charged surface of SiC nanowires and the positive CH2 groups in PVDF facilitated the formation of polar phases in PVDF

    106GBaud (200G PAM4) CWDM EML for 800G/1.6T Optical Networks and AI Applications

    We report ultrahigh speed 106GBaud (200G PAM4) electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) for 800G and 1.6T optical transmission. Four CWDM EMLs of 1271, 1291, 1311 and 1331nm in 800G FR4 optical transceivers show clear eye diagram after 2km. Our 106GBaud EMLs show high bandwidth, high extinction ratio, low threshold current and high power, making it a suitable source laser for 800G/1.6T and AI applications.&nbsp

    The impact of medical insurance on medical expenses for older Chinese: Evidence from the national baseline survey of CLHLS.

    With the deepening population aging process in China, the medical expenses of older adults has become a widespread concerned. Medical insurance is a major source of Chinese medical financing and payment. The study aims to understand the current status of medical expenses for older adults and explore the effect of different types of health insurance on medical expenses in China.The data came from the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey (CLHLS) in 2014. The Kruskal-Wallis test and general multivariate linear regression model were applied to analyze the current situation and to explore how medical insurance as the main payment impacts medical expenses.A total of 4376 older participants were included in this study. The median of medical expenses of a total was 1500 Yuan per year. The proportions of participants who had the urban employee-based basic medical insurance (UE-BMI), the urban residents basic medical insurance (UR-BMI), the new rural cooperative medical insurance scheme (NCMS), and the commercial medical insurance were 10.8%, 8.4%, 72.7%, and 0.9%, respectively. 34.8% of older adults paid the health care service via the NCMS and 11.9% paid via the UE-BMI. Participating in the NCMS and UR-BMI are significantly related to the level of the medical fees of older adults. UE-BMI, UR-BMI, and NCMS as main payment eased the pressure of medical expenses.The influence of different types of medical insurances as main payments on the medical expenses of older adults is varied. Implementation of medical insurance should be taken to further relieve the medical expenses of older adults

    The incidence of vasovagal reactions during earlobe piercing

    BackgroundVasovagal reactions are common amongst patients with a fear of needles receiving injections or during venipuncture, but they are rarely studied in healthy people undergoing earlobe piercing. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the incidence and the features of vasovagal reactions observed during earlobe piercing.MethodsThousand eight hundred and sixty six participants aged older than 13 years had their earlobes pierced in our department from January 2020 to January 2022. When vasovagal reactions occurred during the procedure (e.g., dizziness, pallor, diaphoresis, and faintness, etc.), they were recorded and more detailed demographic information was collected.ResultsA total of 196 cases of vasovagal reactions were reported in females amongst 1,866 participants, including 58 who actually lost consciousness during earlobe piercing. The incidence of vasovagal reactions and vasovagal syncope was 10.5 and 3.11% respectively. All syncopal reactions occurred in persons younger than 30 years.ConclusionVasovagal syncope is often very sudden and occurs without warning. Practitioners need to be familiar with these reactions, and prevent people from an unpredictable fall and subsequent injury during ear piercing

    Global climate damage in 2°C and 1.5°C scenarios based on BCC_SESM model in IAM framework

    The quantitative functions for climate damages provide theoretical ground for the cost-benefit analysis in climate change economics, and they are also critical for linking climate module with economic module in the Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs). Nevertheless, it is necessary for IAMs to update sectoral climate impacts in order to catch up the advance in climate change studies. This study updates the sectoral climate damage function at global scale from climate Framework for Uncertainty, Negotiation and Distribution (FUND) model and develops the aggregate climate damage function in a bottom-up fashion. Besides conventional sectors such as agriculture, forestry, water resources, energy consumption and ecosystems, this study expands climate disaster types, assesses human health impacts caused by various air pollutants, and updates coastal damage by sea level rise. The Beijing Climate Center Simple Earth System Model (BCC_SESM) is used to project climate system based on Business-as-Usual (BAU) scenario, and the 2 °C and 1.5 °C scenarios based on RCPs and SSP2 databases. Sectoral results show that the agricultural sector is projected to suffer 63% of the total damage, followed by water resources (16%) and human health (12%) sectors in 2100. The regression results indicate that the aggregate climate damage function is in positive quadratic form. Under BAU scenario, the aggregate climate damage is projected to be 517.7 trillion USD during 2011‒2100. Compared to that, the 2°C and 1.5°C scenarios are projected to respectively reduce climate damages by 215.6 trillion USD (approximately 41.6%) and 263.5 trillion USD (50.9%) in 2011‒2100

    Generalized joint density of states and its application to exploring the pairing symmetry of superconductors

    We introduce a generalized joint density of states (GJDOS), which incorporates the coherent factor into the JDOS, to study quasiparticle interference (QPI) in superconductors. The intimate relation between the Fourier-transformed local density of states and GJDOS is revealed: they corre- spond respectively to the real and imaginary parts of a generalized impurity-response function, and particularly share the same angular factors and singular boundaries, as seen from our approximate analytic results for d-wave superconductors. Remarkably, our numerical GJDOS analysis agrees well with the QPI patten of d-wave cuprates and s\pm-wave iron-based superconductors. Moreover, we illustrate that the present GJDOS scenario can uncover the sign features of the superconducting gap and thus can be used to explore the possible pairing symmetry of the KxFe2-ySe2 superconductors.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
