    Unemployment and Right-wing Extremist Crime

    Get PDF
It is frequently argued that unemployment plays a crucial role for the occurrence of right- wing extremist crimes. We empirically test this hypothesis using data from Germany. We find that right-wing criminal activities occur more frequently when unemployment is high. The big difference in right-wing crime between East and West German states can mostly be attributed to differences in unemployment. This finding reinforces the importance of unemployment as an explanatory factor for right-wing crime and questions explanations based solely on the different socialization in former communist East Germany and the liberal West German states.Hate crime, right-wing extremism, unemployment, cost of unemployment

Topology of dynamical lattice configurations including results from dynamical overlap fermions

We investigate how the topological charge density in lattice QCD simulations is affected by violations of chiral symmetry in different fermion actions. To this end we compare lattice configurations generated with a number of different actions including first configurations generated with exact overlap quarks. We visualize the topological profiles after mild smearing. In the topological charge correlator we measure the size of the positive core, which is known to vanish in the continuum limit. To leading order we find the core size to scale linearly with the lattice spacing with the same coefficient for all actions, even including quenched simulations. In the subleading term the different actions vary over a range of about 10 %. Our findings suggest that non-chiral lattice actions at current lattice spacings do not differ much for this specific observable related to topology, both among themselves and compared to overlap fermions.Comment: 7 pages, talk presented at The XXIX International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory - Lattice 2011, July 10-16, 2011, Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe, Californi

Algorithms for Operational Planning of Agricultural Field Operations

The report describes the current project activities on the development of optimization methods for planning agricultural field operations and on the estimation of the potential benefits for farmers by comparing optimized plans with conventional ones. The complete activities include:1) The GNSS-based monitoring and recording of 5 large scale harvestingoperations executed by fleets of agricultural machinery (E.g. Maize harvesting executed by 1 forage harvester and 5 transport carts and grain harvesting executed by 3 combines and 3 transport carts).2) The development of a method for the automatic extraction of performance statistics from GNSS recordings of multiple-machinery operations. Classification algorithms have been created able to automatically classify the task time elements based on the recordingsfrom GNSS loggers.3) The development of a path planning method for transport units supporting harvesting operations. The approach incorporated i) the optimization criterions of time or travelled distance; ii) the generationof paths for both in-field and between fields movements of the transport units; and iii) the adoption of restricted movements as imposed by the controlled traffic farming concept

The Fraunhofer Quantum Computing Portal - www.qc.fraunhofer.de - A web-based Simulator of Quantum Computing Processes

Fraunhofer FIRST develops a computing service and collaborative workspace providing a convenient tool for simulation and investigation of quantum algorithms. To broaden the twenty qubit limit of workstation-based simulations to the next qubit decade we provide a dedicated high memorized Linux cluster with fast Myrinet interconnection network together with a adapted parallel simulator engine. This simulation service supplemented by a collaborative workspace is usable everywhere via web interface and integrates both hardware and software as collaboration and investigation platform for the quantum community. The beta test version realizes all common one, two and three qubit gates, arbitrary one and two bit gates, orthogonal measurements as well as special gates like Oracle, Modulo function, Quantum Fourier Transformation and arbitrary Spin-Hamiltonians up to 31 qubits. For a restricted gate set it feasible to investigate circuits with up to sixty qubits. URL: http://www.qc.fraunhofer.d

CP violation and the CKM matrix

    Get PDF
Our knowledge of quark-flavor physics and CP violation increased tremendously over the past five years. It is confirmed that the Standard Model correctly describes the dominant parts of the observed CP-violating and flavor-changing phenomena. Not only does CP violation provide some of the most precise constraints on the flavor sector, but several measurements performed at the B-factories achieved much better precision than had been expected. We review the present status of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and CP violation, recollect the relevant experimental and theoretical inputs, display the results from the global CKM fit, and discuss their implications for the Standard Model and some of its extensions.Comment: 61 pages, 11 figures; review article to be published in Ann.
