Electromagnetic field evolution in relativistic heavy-ion collisions
The hadron string dynamics (HSD) model is generalized to include the creation
and evolution of retarded electromagnetic fields as well as the influence of
the magnetic and electric fields on the quasiparticle propagation. The
time-space structure of the fields is analyzed in detail for non-central Au+Au
collisions at 200 GeV. It is shown that the created magnetic
field is highly inhomogeneous but in the central region of the overlapping
nuclei it changes relatively weakly in the transverse direction. For the impact
parameter 10 fm the maximal magnetic field - perpendicularly to the
reaction plane - is obtained of order 5 for a very short time
0.2 fm/c, which roughly corresponds to the time of a maximal overlap of
the colliding nuclei. We find that at any time the location of the maximum in
the distribution correlates with that of the energy density of the
created particles. In contrast, the electric field distribution, being also
highly inhomogeneous, has a minimum in the center of the overlap region.
Furthermore, the field characteristics are presented as a function of the
collision energy and the centrality of the collisions. To explore the effect of
the back reaction of the fields on hadronic observables a comparison of HSD
results with and without fields is exemplified. Our actual calculations show no
noticeable influence of the electromagnetic fields - created in heavy-ion
collisions - on the effect of the electric charge separation with respect to
the reaction plane.Comment: 17 pages, 22 figures, title changed by editor, accepted for PR
Barriers to enrollment in a randomized controlled trial of hydrocortisone for cardiovascular insufficiency in term and late preterm newborn infants.
ObjectiveTo analyze reasons for low enrollment in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of the effect of hydrocortisone for cardiovascular insufficiency on survival without neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) in term/late preterm newborns.Study designThe original study was a multicenter RCT. Eligibility: ⩾34 weeks' gestation, <72 h old, mechanically ventilated, receiving inotrope. Primary outcome was NDI at 2 years; infants with diagnoses at high risk for NDI were excluded. This paper presents an analysis of reasons for low patient enrollment.ResultsTwo hundred and fifty-seven of the 932 otherwise eligible infants received inotropes; however, 207 (81%) had exclusionary diagnoses. Only 12 infants were randomized over 10 months; therefore, the study was terminated. Contributing factors included few eligible infants after exclusions, open-label steroid therapy and a narrow enrollment window.ConclusionDespite an observational study to estimate the population, very few infants were enrolled. Successful RCTs of emergent therapy may require fewer exclusions, a short-term primary outcome, waiver of consent and/or other alternatives

Strange quark matter in explosive astrophysical systems
Explosive astrophysical systems, such as supernovae or compact star binary
mergers, provide conditions where strange quark matter can appear. The high
degree of isospin asymmetry and temperatures of several MeV in such systems may
cause a transition to the quark phase already around saturation density.
Observable signals from the appearance of quark matter can be predicted and
studied in astrophysical simulations. As input in such simulations, an equation
of state with an integrated quark matter phase transition for a large
temperature, density and proton fraction range is required. Additionally,
restrictions from heavy ion data and pulsar observation must be considered. In
this work we present such an approach. We implement a quark matter phase
transition in a hadronic equation of state widely used for astrophysical
simulations and discuss its compatibility with heavy ion collisions and pulsar
data. Furthermore, we review the recently studied implications of the QCD phase
transition during the early post-bounce evolution of core-collapse supernovae
and introduce the effects from strong interactions to increase the maximum mass
of hybrid stars. In the MIT bag model, together with the strange quark mass and
the bag constant, the strong coupling constant provides a parameter
to set the beginning and extension of the quark phase and with this the mass
and radius of hybrid stars.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, talk given at the International Conference on

Iroa: the international register of open abdomen. an international effort to better understand the open abdomen: call for participants
Actually the most common indications for Open Abdomen (OA) are trauma, abdominal sepsis, severe acute pancreatitis and more in general all those situations in which an intra-abdominal hypertension condition is present, in order to prevent the development of an abdominal compartment syndrome. The mortality and morbidity rate in patients undergone to OA procedures is still high. At present many studies have been published about the OA management and the progresses in survival rate of critically ill trauma and septic surgical patients. However several issues are still unclear and need more extensive studies. The definitions of indications, applications and methods to close the OA are still matter of debate. To overcome this lack of high level of evidence data about the OA indications, management, definitive closure and follow-up, the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) promoted the International Register of Open Abdomen (IROA). The register will be held on a web platform (Clinical Registers (R)) through a dedicated web site: www. clinicalregisters. org. This will allow to all surgeons and physicians to participate from all around the world only by having a computer and a web connection. The IROA protocol has been approved by the coordinating center Ethical Committee (Papa Giovanni XXIII hospital, Bergamo, Italy).Actually the most common indications for Open Abdomen (OA) are trauma, abdominal sepsis, severe acute pancreatitis and more in general all those situations in which an intra-abdominal hypertension condition is present, in order to prevent the development103713sem informaçãosem informaçã
Limit on suppression of ionization in metastable neon traps due to long-range anisotropy
This paper investigates the possibility of suppressing the ionization rate in
a magnetostatic trap of metastable neon atoms by spin-polarizing the atoms.
Suppression of the ionization is critical for the possibility of reaching
Bose-Einstein condensation with such atoms. We estimate the relevant long-range
interactions for the system, consisting of electric quadrupole-quadrupole and
dipole-induced dipole terms, and develop short-range potentials based on the
Na_2 singlet and triplet potentials. The auto-ionization widths of the system
are also calculated. With these ingredients we calculate the ionization rate
for spin-polarized and for spin-isotropic samples, caused by anisotropy of the
long-range interactions. We find that spin-polarization may allow for four
orders of magnitude suppression of the ionization rate for Ne. The results
depend sensitively on a precise knowledge of the interaction potentials,
however, pointing out the need for experimental input. The same model gives a
suppression ratio close to unity for metastable xenon in accordance with
experimental results, due to a much increased anisotropy in this case.Comment: 15 pages including figures, LaTex/RevTex, uses epsfig.st
Whole Earth Telescope observations of the pulsating subdwarf B star PG 0014+067
PG 0014+067 is one of the most promising pulsating subdwarf B stars for
seismic analysis, as it has a rich pulsation spectrum. The richness of its
pulsations, however, poses a fundamental challenge to understanding the
pulsations of these stars, as the mode density is too complex to be explained
only with radial and nonradial low degree (l < 3) p-modes without rotational
splittings. One proposed solution, for the case of PG 0014+067 in particular,
assigns some modes with high degree (l=3). On the other hand, theoretical
models of sdB stars suggest that they may retain rapidly rotating cores, and so
the high mode density may result from the presence of a few rotationally-split
triplet (l=1), quintuplet (l=2) modes, along with radial (l=0) p-modes. To
examine alternative theoretical models for these stars, we need better
frequency resolution and denser longitude coverage. Therefore, we observed this
star with the Whole Earth Telescope for two weeks in October 2004. In this
paper we report the results of Whole Earth Telescope observations of the
pulsating subdwarf B star PG 0014+067. We find that the frequencies seen in PG
0014+067 do not appear to fit any theoretical model currently available;
however, we find a simple empirical relation that is able to match all of the
well-determined frequencies in this star.Comment: 19 pages, preprint of paper accepted for publication in The

Hydrodynamical instabilities in an expanding quark gluon plasma
We study the mechanism responsible for the onset of instabilities in a chiral
phase transition at nonzero temperature and baryon chemical potential. As a
low-energy effective model, we consider an expanding relativistic plasma of
quarks coupled to a chiral field, and obtain a phenomenological chiral
hydrodynamics from a variational principle. Studying the dispersion relation
for small fluctuations around equilibrium, we identify the role played by
chiral waves and pressure waves in the generation of instabilities. We show
that pressure modes become unstable earlier than chiral modes.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Improved semiclassical density matrix: taming caustics
We present a simple method to deal with caustics in the semiclassical
approximation to the thermal density matrix of a particle moving on the line.
For simplicity, only its diagonal elements are considered. The only ingredient
we require is the knowledge of the extrema of the Euclidean action. The
procedure makes use of complex trajectories, and is applied to the quartic
double-well potential.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures. Revised version, accepted for publication in
