A note on the singular value decomposition of (skew-)involutory and (skew-)coninvolutory matrices
The singular values of an involutory matrix
appear in pairs while the singular values may appear in pairs or by themselves. The left and right singular
vectors of pairs of singular values are closely connected. This link is used to
reformulate the singular value decomposition (SVD) of an involutory matrix as
an eigendecomposition. This displays an interesting relation between the
singular values of an involutory matrix and its eigenvalues. Similar
observations hold for the SVD, the singular values and the coneigenvalues of
(skew-)coninvolutory matrices
The determinants for continuance intention in mobile fitness apps adopting a gamification approach
The goal of this study is to find the determinants which explain the continuance intention of
fitness apps adopting a gamification approach. An online questionnaire was conducted in
which gamified fitness app users (n=110) were interrogated about their opinions on fitness
apps and continuance intention. The results of the factor analysis and the multiple linear regression
analysis showed that four factors directly influence continuance intention – habit,
perceived enjoyment, attitude, and perceived ease of use. Moreover, habit mediates the relationship
between attitude and continuance intention, as well as the relationship between perceived
enjoyment and continuance intention. Perceived ease of use mediates the relationship
between perceived enjoyment and continuance intention. Post-adoption regret and user
engagement were not detected to significantly explain continuance intention. Consequently,
researchers can adopt these variables and mediators. For practitioners the findings indicate
that product development should focus on enjoyment of fitness apps to increase continuance
intention and perceived ease of use. Habit is a relevant determinant for continuance intention,
so the triggers need to be explored which habituate usage. Positive attitudes are crucial
in the development of continuance intentions. Attitudes support habit forming and the ease of
use. Therefore, practitioners must understand how the attitudes of their targets are formed
and how they can influence this process. For future studies, the game elements of fitness
apps could be analysed to understand which have the biggest impact on continuance intention.
The mediators could also be tested in other gamified app environments, like travel or
continuidade no uso.
Solid-state NMR investigation of phosphonic acid based proton conducting materials
In this work, new promising proton conducting fuel cell membrane materials were characterized in terms of their structure and dynamic properties using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Structurally different, phosphonic acid (PA) containing materials were systematically evaluated for possible high-temperature operation (e.g. at T>100°C). Notably, 1H, 2H and 31P magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR provided insight into local connectivities and dynamics of the hydrogen bonded network, while packing arrangements were identified by means of heteronuclear dipolar recoupling techniques.rnThe first part of this work introduced rather crystalline, low molecular weight ionomers for proton conducting membranes, where six different geometries such as line, triangle, screw, tetrahedron, square and hexagon, were investigated. The hexagon was identified as the most promising geometry with high-temperature bulk proton conductivities in the range of 10-3 Scm-1 at a relative humidity of 50%. However, 2H NMR and TGA-MS data suggest that the bulk proton transport is mainly due to the presence of crystal water. Single crystal X-ray data revealed that in the tetrahedron phosphonic acids form tetrameric clusters isolating the mobile protons while the phosphonic acids in the hexagon form zigzag-type pathways through the sample.rnThe second part of this work demonstrates how acid-base pairing and the choice of appropriate spacers may influence proton conduction. Different ratios of statistical copolymers of poly (vinylphosphonic acid) and poly (4-vinylpyridine) were measured to derive information about the local structure and chemical changes. Though anhydrous proton conductivities of all statistical copolymers are rather poor, the conductivity increases to 10-2 S cm-1 when exposing the sample to relative humidity of 80%. In contrast to PVPA, anhydride formation of phosphonic acids in the copolymer is not reversible even when exposing the sample to a relative humidity of 100%.rnIn addition, the influence of both spacers and degree of backbone crystallinity on bulk proton conductivity was investigated. Unlike in systems such as poly benzimidazole (PBI), spacers were inserted between the protogenic groups along the backbone. It was found that dilution of the protogenic groups decreases the conductivity, but compared to PVPA, similar apparent activation energies for local motions were obtained from both variable temperature 1H NMR and impedance spectroscopy data. These observations suggest the formation of phosphonic acid clusters with high degrees of local proton motion, where only a fraction of motions contribute to the observable bulk proton conductivity. Additionally, it was shown that gradual changes of the spacer length lead to different morphologies.rnIn summary, applying advanced solid-state NMR and X-ray analysis, structural and dynamic phenomena in proton conducting materials were identified on a molecular level. The results were discussed with respect to different proton conduction mechanisms and may contribute to a more rational design or improvement of proton conducting membranes.rnIn dieser Arbeit wurden neuartige Membranmaterialien für den möglichen Einsatz in Brennstoffzellen mittels Festkörper-Kernspinresonanzspektroskopie (NMR) sowie Röntgendiffraktometrie untersucht.

Westfalen vorliegt. Eine Infertilität oder Subfertilität wurde als mögliche
Ursache für den Rückgang der Feldhasenpopulationen diskutiert. Insgesamt
Untersuchungen in ihrer Aussagekraft überlegen. Der bisher nicht erkennbare
Einfluss unterschiedlicher Habitatqualitäten sollte in weiteren Untersuchungen
The applied methods in this long-term study provided reliable data on
reproductive performance of Ebh. The aim of this study was to elucidate
whether disrupted fertility was responsible for the decline of Ebh in
different habitats in North Rhine-Westphalia. Infertility or subfertility were
discussed as a potential cause for population decline. A total number of 375
free-living Ebh, 178 females and 197 males, of 15 different habitats were
caught and assessed under general anaesthesia. The applied methods included
the evaluation of morphometrical, sonographical, spermatological and
endocrinological parameters. The special catching technique in combination
with inhalation anaesthesia and non-surgical examination provided, for the
first time, the possibility to assess reproductive parameters in free-living
hares during close season. In comparison with post-mortem studies, much more
information was able without diminishing number of hares. The specific design
of the examination protocol in this study allowed the acquisition of
reproductive parameters for the detection of reduced fertility (BLOTTNER,
2001; modified and completed after MATTISON, 1989). The study periods included
the main breeding season (February and April) and the period of reduced sexual
activity (July). Post-mortem examinations in situ and ex situ provided the
schematic illustration of the anatomy and topography of the entire urogenital
tract. This information was not available until now and was essential for the
interpretation of ultrasonographical findings. Based on the results of the
general examination, no reduced body condition was detected. The results
suggested a seasonal influence, but there were no indications of any
pathological changes of the gonads of female hares. A total amount of 83,15 %
of the animals were reproductively active. The mean pregnancy rate of 67,98 %
did not indicate an impairment of reproductive performance. Especially in
July, a smaller portion of non-pregnant animals was elevated by a higher
portion of lactating animals. In the group of non-pregnant and non-lactating
animals, the ultrasonographical findings of the ovaries (including functional
structures like follicles and corpora lutea) and the hormonal levels of P4
(15,9 + 4,7 ng / ml) and E2 (0,07 + 0,01 ng / ml) indicated physiological
sexual activity in the main breeding season. Mean number of foetuses (1,9 +
0,1) per pregnancy was smaller than in literature reported. This does not
correlate necessarily with reproductive failure, because the
ultrasonographical imaging of foetal integrity and vitality (prevalence of
embryonic or foetal death 8,26 %) did not result in any disturbance. In
particular, the number of females with reproductive pathology (2,25 %) was
very low. The results showed a significant seasonal influence on testicular
size and mean volume that was lower than in other studies, but
ultrasonographical findings did not show any general or habitat-dependent
disturbance of gonadal activity. Pathological alterations on testis found in
one case were of traumatic origin. Additionally, seasonal influence showed
significant differences in sperm production. Mating activity in the field was
not observed in this project. Time studies to determine the amount of time
needed for sperm quantity and quality to return post mating should follow. The
high percentages of motile and intact spermatozoa demonstrated an unimpaired
reproductive performance. In some males with low ejaculate and/or sperm
quantity, the analysis of testicular tissue (fine needle biopsy) did not show
any disturbances of spermatogenesis. The variability of reproductive
parameters between the individuals did not show any relationship to the
different habitat types. First, low testosterone concentrations (in April:
0,32 + 0,02 ng / ml) suggested a disturbance of reproduction, but no relation
between androgen production and habitats and high or low hare population
density was detected. The applied methods were suitable to detect reproductive
failures and provided much more information than post - mortem studies. Until
now no influence of habitat type could be found. Further examinations should
occur on a larger number of animals. On the basis of these results, future
studies could be performed on stability or changes of reproductive performance
over an extended time period. In conclusion, the results suggested that the
decline in Ebh populations is a result of a reduced survival rate rather than
by a disturbed fertility
A note on an unusual type of polar decomposition
AbstractMotivated by applications in the theory of unitary congruence, we introduce the factorization of a square complex matrix A of the form A=SU, where S is complex symmetric and U is unitary. We call this factorization a symmetric–unitary polar decomposition or an SUPD. It is shown that an SUPD exists for every matrix A and is always nonunique. Even the symmetric factor S can be chosen in infinitely many ways. Nevertheless, we show that many properties of the conventional polar decomposition related to normal matrices have their counterparts for the SUPD, provided that normal matrices are replaced with conjugate–normal ones
(authors' abstract)Series: Research Reports of the Institute for Economic Geography and GIScienc
On a family of low-rank algorithms for large-scale algebraic Riccati equations
In [3] it was shown that four seemingly different algorithms for computing
low-rank approximate solutions to the solution of large-scale
continuous-time algebraic Riccati equations (CAREs) generate the same sequence when used with the same
parameters. The Hermitian low-rank approximations are of the form where is a matrix with only few columns and is a
small square Hermitian matrix. Each generates a low-rank Riccati residual
such that the norm of the residual can be evaluated easily
allowing for an efficient termination criterion. Here a new family of methods
to generate such low-rank approximate solutions of CAREs is proposed.
Each member of this family of algorithms proposed here generates the same
sequence of as the four previously known algorithms. The approach is
based on a block rational Arnoldi decomposition and an associated block
rational Krylov subspace spanned by and Two specific versions of
the general algorithm will be considered; one will turn out to be a rediscovery
of the RADI algorithm, the other one allows for a slightly more efficient
implementation compared to the RADI algorithm. Moreover, our approach allows
for adding more than one shift at a time
