Combining a ractopamine feeding regime and porcine somatotropin has additive effects on finisher pig performance
Treatment of finisher pigs with dietary ractopamine (RAC; Paylean®, Elanco Animal Health, NSW) improves daily gain and feed efficiency commensurate with increased protein deposition in finishing pigs (Dunshea et al., 1993). However, effects of RAC on P2 fat deposition are equivocal. Dunshea et al. (1993) found no change in gilts and barrows, whilst a trend towards reduced P2 depth was observed in boars fed dietary RAC. Exogenous porcine somatotropin (pST; Reporcin®, OzBioPharm Pty Ltd, Victoria) improves daily gain and feed efficiency and increases the ratio oflean to fat in carcases of boars, gilts and barrows (Campbell et al., 1989). As both technologies are applied at the end of the finishing phase, it is of interest to determine whether a combination of RAC and pST has additive effects on pig performance
Multigrid Monte Carlo Algorithms for SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory: Two versus Four Dimensions
We study a multigrid method for nonabelian lattice gauge theory, the time
slice blocking, in two and four dimensions. For SU(2) gauge fields in two
dimensions, critical slowing down is almost completely eliminated by this
method. This result is in accordance with theoretical arguments based on the
analysis of the scale dependence of acceptance rates for nonlocal Metropolis
updates. The generalization of the time slice blocking to SU(2) in four
dimensions is investigated analytically and by numerical simulations. Compared
to two dimensions, the local disorder in the four dimensional gauge field leads

Quenched Lattice QCD with Domain Wall Fermions and the Chiral Limit
Quenched QCD simulations on three volumes, , and
and three couplings, , 5.85 and 6.0 using domain
wall fermions provide a consistent picture of quenched QCD. We demonstrate that
the small induced effects of chiral symmetry breaking inherent in this
formulation can be described by a residual mass (\mres) whose size decreases
as the separation between the domain walls () is increased. However, at
stronger couplings much larger values of are required to achieve a given
physical value of \mres. For and , we find
\mres/m_s=0.033(3), while for , and ,
\mres/m_s=0.074(5), where is the strange quark mass. These values are
significantly smaller than those obtained from a more naive determination in
our earlier studies. Important effects of topological near zero modes which
should afflict an accurate quenched calculation are easily visible in both the
chiral condensate and the pion propagator. These effects can be controlled by
working at an appropriately large volume. A non-linear behavior of in
the limit of small quark mass suggests the presence of additional infrared
subtlety in the quenched approximation. Good scaling is seen both in masses and
in over our entire range, with inverse lattice spacing varying between

Region graph partition function expansion and approximate free energy landscapes: Theory and some numerical results
Graphical models for finite-dimensional spin glasses and real-world
combinatorial optimization and satisfaction problems usually have an abundant
number of short loops. The cluster variation method and its extension, the
region graph method, are theoretical approaches for treating the complicated
short-loop-induced local correlations. For graphical models represented by
non-redundant or redundant region graphs, approximate free energy landscapes
are constructed in this paper through the mathematical framework of region
graph partition function expansion. Several free energy functionals are
obtained, each of which use a set of probability distribution functions or
functionals as order parameters. These probability distribution
function/functionals are required to satisfy the region graph
belief-propagation equation or the region graph survey-propagation equation to
ensure vanishing correction contributions of region subgraphs with dangling
edges. As a simple application of the general theory, we perform region graph
belief-propagation simulations on the square-lattice ferromagnetic Ising model
and the Edwards-Anderson model. Considerable improvements over the conventional
Bethe-Peierls approximation are achieved. Collective domains of different sizes
in the disordered and frustrated square lattice are identified by the
message-passing procedure. Such collective domains and the frustrations among
them are responsible for the low-temperature glass-like dynamical behaviors of

Practicalities of language data collection and management in and around Indonesia
Researchers use different approaches when collecting and managing primary language materials during fieldwork. Yet it is important that this work is done in a transparent way, so that it can be used by other researchers, who might have other aims, as well as by the speaker community who might want to use or take note of the collected materials. In this article we use our research experience in language data collection in and around Indonesia in fieldwork projects of three kinds: descriptive fieldwork, linguistic surveys, and projects investigating language contact. Our aim is to provide an introductory and practical guide for students and professionals who are embarking on fieldwork in or around Indonesia. Transfer Matrices and Partition-Function Zeros for Antiferromagnetic Potts Models. V. Further Results for the Square-Lattice Chromatic Polynomial
We derive some new structural results for the transfer matrix of
square-lattice Potts models with free and cylindrical boundary conditions. In
particular, we obtain explicit closed-form expressions for the dominant (at
large |q|) diagonal entry in the transfer matrix, for arbitrary widths m, as
the solution of a special one-dimensional polymer model. We also obtain the
large-q expansion of the bulk and surface (resp. corner) free energies for the
zero-temperature antiferromagnet (= chromatic polynomial) through order q^{-47}
(resp. q^{-46}). Finally, we compute chromatic roots for strips of widths 9 <=

Bats in the Ghats: Agricultural intensification reduces functional diversity and increases trait filtering in a biodiversity hotspot in India
The responses of bats to land-use change have been extensively studied in temperate zones and the neotropics, but little is known from the palaeotropics. Effective conservation in heavily-populated palaeotropical hotspots requires a better understanding of which bats can and cannot survive in human-modified landscapes. We used catching and acoustic transects to examine bat assemblages in the Western Ghats of India, and identify the species most sensitive to agricultural change. We quantified functional diversity and trait filtering of assemblages in forest fragments, tea and coffee plantations, and along rivers in tea plantations with and without forested corridors, compared to protected forests. Functional diversity in forest fragments and shade-grown coffee was similar to that in protected forests, but was far lower in tea plantations. Trait filtering was also strongest in tea plantations. Forested river corridors in tea plantations mitigated much of the loss of functional diversity and the trait filtering seen on rivers in tea plantations without forested corridors. The bats most vulnerable to intensive agriculture were frugivorous, large, had short broad wings, or made constant frequency echolocation calls. The last three features are characteristic of forest animal-eating species that typically take large prey, often by gleaning. Ongoing conservation work to restore forest fragments and retain native trees in coffee plantations should be highly beneficial for bats in this landscape. The maintenance of a mosaic landscape with sufficient patches of forest, shade-grown coffee and riparian corridors will help to maintain landscape wide functional diversity in an area dominated by tea plantations
Surface state atoms and their contribution to the surface tension of quantum liquids
We investigate the new type of excitations on the surface of liquid helium.
These excitations, called surfons, appear because helium atoms have discrete
energy level at the liquid surface, being attracted to the surface by the van
der Waals force and repulsed at a hard-core interatomic distance. The
concentration of the surfons increases with temperature. The surfons propagate
along the surface and form a two-dimensional gas. Basing on the simple model of
the surfon microscopic structure, we estimate the surfon activation energy and
effective mass for both helium isotopes. We also calculate the contribution of
the surfons to the temperature dependence of the surface tension. This
contribution explains the great and long-standing discrepancy between theory
and experiment on this temperature dependence in both helium isotopes. The
achieved agreement between our theory and experiment is extremely high. The
comparison with experiment allows to extract the surfon activation energy and
effective mass. The values of these surfon microscopic parameters are in a
reasonable agreement with the calculated from the proposed simple model of
