Proactive Highly Ambulatory Sensor Routing (PHASeR) protocol for mobile wireless sensor networks

    Get PDF
This paper presents a novel multihop routing protocol for mobile wireless sensor networks called PHASeR (Proactive Highly Ambulatory Sensor Routing). The proposed protocol uses a simple hop-count metric to enable the dynamic and robust routing of data towards the sink in mobile environments. It is motivated by the application of radiation mapping by unmanned vehicles, which requires the reliable and timely delivery of regular measurements to the sink. PHASeR maintains a gradient metric in mobile environments by using a global TDMA MAC layer. It also uses the technique of blind forwarding to pass messages through the network in a multipath manner. PHASeR is analysed mathematically based on packet delivery ratio, average packet delay, throughput and overhead. It is then simulated with varying mobility, scalability and traffic loads. The protocol gives good results over all measures, which suggests that it may also be suitable for a wider array of emerging applications

Metastatic potential of human renal cell carcinoma: experimental model using subrenal capsule implantation in athymic nude mice

The aim of this study was to determine whether subrenal capsule (SRC) implantation is a suitable model for the study of the metastatic potential of our human renal cell carcinoma (HRCC) lines and to establish new sublines with enhanced metastatic ability. NMRI athymic nude mice 7-11 weeks old received SRC implantation of our HRCC lines RC43 and RC21. These lines were not metastatic when implanted s.c. Mice were killed after 4 or 8 weeks, or when moribund. With the RC43 cell line the success rate for implantation was 69%, with 89% of these showing metastases. The average volume of the implanted tumour fragments was 0.5 mm3 (range 0.28-0.7), the average volume at the primary site at the time of death was 9087 (9-32000) mm3. Metastases were found in lymph nodes, liver, spleen, peritoneum, psoas muscle, pancreas, diaphragm and skin. The average volume of the metastases was 4139 (0.5-9000) mm3. Growing cell lines were established in vivo and in vitro from one splenic, one peritoneal, one diaphragmatic, and one hepatic metastasis. These sublines have faster in vivo and slower in vitro growth rates than the parental lines. With the RC21 cell line the success rate for implantation was 56% and the metastatic rate 78%. The average volume of the implanted tumour was 0.8 mm3 (0.28-1.2), the average volume at the primary site at the time of death was 2685 mm3 (1.4-6534) and the average volume of metastases was 7.1 mm3 (0.5-37.5). Metastases were found in lymph nodes, lung and skin. No establishment was attempted for RC21 because of the small dimensions of these metastases. SRC implantation is thus considered a useful tool for the study of the metastatic ability of our cell lines RC43 and RC21. The establishment of new sublines with a faster growth rate and an enhanced metastatic ability will be useful for further studies on the metastatic process

Towards a practical implementation of coherent WDM:analytical, numerical, and experimental studies

Future optical networks will require the implementation of very high capacity (and therefore spectral efficient) technologies. Multi-carrier systems, such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Coherent WDM (CoWDM), are promising candidates. In this paper, we present analytical, numerical, and experimental investigations of the impact of the relative phases between optical subcarriers of CoWDM systems, as well as the effect that the number of independently modulated subcarriers can have on the performance. We numerically demonstrate a five-subcarrier and three-subcarrier 10-GBd CoWDM system with direct detected amplitude shift keying (ASK) and differentially/coherently detected (D) phase shift keying (PSK). The simulation results are compared with experimental measurements of a 32-Gbit/s DPSK CoWDM system in two configurations. The first configuration was a practical 3-modulator array where all three subcarriers were independently modulated, the second configuration being a traditional 2-modulator odd/even configuration, where only odd and even subcarriers were independently modulated. Simulation and experimental results both indicate that the independent modulation implementation has a greater dependency on the relative phases between subcarriers, with a stronger penalty for the center subcarrier than the odd/even modulation scheme

A Tale of Two Fractals: The Hofstadter Butterfly and The Integral Apollonian Gaskets

This paper unveils a mapping between a quantum fractal that describes a physical phenomena, and an abstract geometrical fractal. The quantum fractal is the Hofstadter butterfly discovered in 1976 in an iconic condensed matter problem of electrons moving in a two-dimensional lattice in a transverse magnetic field. The geometric fractal is the integer Apollonian gasket characterized in terms of a 300 BC problem of mutually tangent circles. Both of these fractals are made up of integers. In the Hofstadter butterfly, these integers encode the topological quantum numbers of quantum Hall conductivity. In the Apollonian gaskets an infinite number of mutually tangent circles are nested inside each other, where each circle has integer curvature. The mapping between these two fractals reveals a hidden threefold symmetry embedded in the kaleidoscopic images that describe the asymptotic scaling properties of the butterfly. This paper also serves as a mini review of these fractals, emphasizing their hierarchical aspects in terms of Farey fractions

Metformin extended-release versus immediate-release:An international, randomized, double-blind, head-to-head trial in pharmacotherapy-naïve patients with type 2 diabetes

This international, randomized, double-blind trial (NCT01864174) compared the efficacy and safety of metformin extended-release (XR) and immediate-release (IR) in patients with type 2 diabetes. After a 4-week placebo lead-in, pharmacotherapy-naïve adults with glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) at 7.0% to 9.2% were randomized (1:1) to receive once-daily metformin XR 2000mg or twice-daily metformin IR 1000mg for 24weeks. The primary endpoint was change in HbA1c after 24weeks. Secondary endpoints were change in fasting plasma glucose (FPG), mean daily glucose (MDG) and patients (%) with HbA1c <7.0% after 24weeks. Overall, 539 patients were randomized (metformin XR, N=268; metformin IR, N=271). Adjusted mean changes in HbA1c, FPG, MDG and patients (%) with HbA1c <7.0% after 24weeks were similar for XR and IR: -0.93% vs -0.96%; -21.1 vs -20.6mg/dL (-1.2 vs -1.1mmol/L); -24.7 vs -27.1mg/dL (-1.4 vs -1.5mmol/L); and 70.9% vs 72.0%, respectively. Adverse events were similar between groups and consistent with previous studies. Overall, metformin XR demonstrated efficacy and safety similar to that of metformin IR over 24weeks, with the advantage of once-daily dosing

Spin asymmetry A_1^d and the spin-dependent structure function g_1^d of the deuteron at low values of x and Q^2

    Get PDF
We present a precise measurement of the deuteron longitudinal spin asymmetry A_1^d and of the deuteron spin-dependent structure function g_1^d at Q^2 < 1 GeV^2 and 4*10^-5 < x < 2.5*10^-2 based on the data collected by the COMPASS experiment at CERN during the years 2002 and 2003. The statistical precision is tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. The measured A_1^d and g_1^d are found to be consistent with zero in the whole range of x.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure

Gluon polarization in the nucleon from quasi-real photoproduction of high-pT hadron pairs

    Get PDF
We present a determination of the gluon polarization Delta G/G in the nucleon, based on the helicity asymmetry of quasi-real photoproduction events, Q^2<1(GeV/c)^2, with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarized muon beam scattered on a polarized 6-LiD target. The helicity asymmetry for the selected events is = 0.002 +- 0.019(stat.) +- 0.003(syst.). From this value, we obtain in a leading-order QCD analysis Delta G/G=0.024 +- 0.089(stat.) +- 0.057(syst.) at x_g = 0.095 and mu^2 =~ 3 (GeV}/c)^2.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

The Spin-dependent Structure Function of the Proton g_1^p and a Test of the Bjorken Sum Rule

    Get PDF
The inclusive double-spin asymmetry, A_1^p, has been measured at COMPASS in deepinelastic polarised muon scattering off a large polarised NH3 target. The data, collected in the year 2007, cover the range Q2 > 1 (GeV/c)^2, 0.004 < x < 0.7 and improve the statistical precision of g_1^p(x) by a factor of two in the region x < 0.02. The new proton asymmetries are combined with those previously published for the deuteron to extract the non-singlet spin-dependent structure function g_1^NS(x,Q2). The isovector quark density, Delta_q_3(x,Q2), is evaluated from a NLO QCD fit of g_1^NS. The first moment of Delta_q3 is in good agreement with the value predicted by the Bjorken sum rule and corresponds to a ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants g_A/g_V = 1.28+-0.07(stat)+-0.10(syst).Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
