    Factors Associated with the Psychosocial Wellbeing Among Parents of Children who are Deaf or Hard-of-hearing

    Purpose: To identify factors associated with low psychosocial wellbeing among parents of children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Method: A cross sectional survey that included instruments to measure psychological distress, functional impairment, and psychological inflexibility. Two hundred and ninety-six parents completed the survey. Results: Analyses revealed that lower income, presence of additional disabilities, younger child age, and psychological inflexibility were factors associated with low parent psychosocial wellbeing. Conclusions: Parents of younger children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing with low income, have children with additional disabilities, and higher psychological inflexibility may experience lower psychosocial wellbeing. Clinicians serving families may need to provide additional and/or different support for parents in adapting to and managing their child’s hearing loss

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore factors influencing the well-being of parents who have children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and to compare their experiences to non-clinical samples. Method: A cross-sectional online survey was used to collect data (N = 296). Results: Data analyses revealed the majority of parents of children who are DHH were functioning similarly to or better than the non-clinical samples in our comparison and within the non-clinical range for the included measures. No relationship was found between factors related to child age or timing of services (age at diagnosis, time between diagnosis and amplification fitting, age fit with hearing technology, child’s current age) and parent psychosocial functioning. Conclusions: While most parents are likely to be functioning well, knowing when a parent is experiencing challenges has important implications for clinical practice, including supporting parents in finding solutions when sub-optimal daily intervention practices are occurring. Audiologists can incorporate strategies to identify parents that may be experiencing challenges into their routine practice

    Behavior and Impact of Zirconium in the Soil–Plant System: Plant Uptake and Phytotoxicity

    Because of the large number of sites they pollute, toxic metals that contaminate terrestrial ecosystems are increasingly of environmental and sanitary concern (Uzu et al. 2010, 2011; Shahid et al. 2011a, b, 2012a). Among such metals is zirconium (Zr), which has the atomic number 40 and is a transition metal that resembles titanium in physical and chemical properties (Zaccone et al. 2008). Zr is widely used in many chemical industry processes and in nuclear reactors (Sandoval et al. 2011; Kamal et al. 2011), owing to its useful properties like hardness, corrosion-resistance and permeable to neutrons (Mushtaq 2012). Hence, the recent increased use of Zr by industry, and the occurrence of the Chernobyl and Fukashima catastrophe have enhanced environmental levels in soil and waters (Yirchenko and Agapkina 1993; Mosulishvili et al. 1994 ; Kruglov et al. 1996)

    Parameter uncertainty and sensitivity in a liquid-effluent dose model

    Radioactive materials which are released into streams on the Savannah River Site (SRS) eventually flow into the Savannah River. Tritium, 90 Sr, 137 Cs, and 239 Pu account for the majority of the radiation dose received by users of the Savannah River. This paper focuses on the dose uncertainties originating from variability in parameters describing the transport and uptake of these nuclides. Parameter sensitivity has also been determined for each liquid pathway exposure model. The models used here to estimate radiation dose to an exposed individual provide a range of possible dose estimates that span approximately one order of magnitude.     A boom‐or‐bust approach — the ‘Glass Cannon’ hypothesis in host microbiomes

The importance of symbiotic microbial communities for the functioning of animal hosts is now well‐documented; however, the interactions between host microbiomes and stress are less well‐understood. Dunphy et al. used a common garden experiment to show that host–microbiomes vary in their resilience across different coral species. The authors then used mathematical modelling to provide novel evidence that species with microbiomes that are regulated by host processes are robust to perturbation from stressors, but that robustness comes at a higher cost to the host. Conversely, species with microbiomes that are regulated by microbial processes are generally much more resilient and cheaper to support, but when disrupted by external stressors, the communities break down entirely—these latter species are termed ‘glass cannons’. This novel hypothesis has important implications for how host microbiomes function in a rapidly changing world that exposes animal hosts to multiple biotic and abiotic perturbations

    Cervical lymph node metastasis in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx: a collective international review

    Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the head and neck is a well-recognized pathologic entity that rarely occurs in the larynx. Although the 5-year locoregional control rates are high, distant metastasis has a tendency to appear more than 5 years post treatment. Because AdCC of the larynx is uncommon, it is difficult to standardize a treatment protocol. One of the controversial points is the decision whether or not to perform an elective neck dissection on these patients. Because there is contradictory information about this issue, we have critically reviewed the literature from 1912 to 2015 on all reported cases of AdCC of the larynx in order to clarify this issue. During the most recent period of our review (1991-2015) with a more exact diagnosis of the tumor histology, 142 cases were observed of AdCC of the larynx, of which 91 patients had data pertaining to lymph node status. Eleven of the 91 patients (12.1%) had nodal metastasis and, based on this low proportion of patients, routine elective neck dissection is therefore not recommended
