'To Boldly Go...' Building a Virtual Classroom

The concept of a Exploration-Based Learning Environment has recently been introduced into the argument that technology can put students back into the field of real learning. IPN has set foot there, where no school has gone before, by actually building a Virtual Classroom. This paper is about our first step towards the Virtual Classroom: Experience-Based Learning by simulations. A field study on the processes involved when going from a regular educational setting to using simulations as part of the educational was done. We discuss eventual pitfalls and the role changes in education for both teacher and pupil, the importance of understanding the psychological process that the pupil goes through and the consequences this has for the guiding staff. Changes are not only necessary to keep up with the change but also to break through the vicious circle of what we call the trend of "Spectacle and Boredom" in education

Shell evolution approaching the N=20 island of inversion : Structure of 26Na

The levels in 26Na with single particle character have been observed for the first time using the d(25Na, pγ) reaction at 5 MeV/nucleon. The measured excitation energies and the deduced spectroscopic factors are in good overall agreement with (0+1)hω shell model calculations performed in a complete spsdfp basis and incorporating a reduction in the N=20 gap. Notably, the 1p3/2 neutron configuration was found to play an enhanced role in the structure of the low-lying negative parity states in 26Na, compared to the isotone 28Al. Thus, the lowering of the 1p3/2 orbital relative to the 0f7/2 occurring in the neighbouring Z=10 and 12 nuclei - 25,27Ne and 27,29Mg - is seen also to occur at Z=11 and further strengthens the constraints on the modelling of the transition into the island of inversion

Investigation of the 24Mg(d, p)25Mg reaction

Abstract Proton angular distributions from the 24Mg(d, p)25Mg reaction at Ed = 12.0 MeV have been measured with a split-pole magnetic spectrograph for Ex < 6 MeV at an average resolution (FWHM) of 7 keV. New ln values have been determined for three levels. A DWBA analysis yielded spectroscopic factors for 17 levels. A comparison has been made with shellmodel and collective model results

Assignment of errors to calculated transition matrix elements

    No full text
Errors are assigned to calculated transition matrix elements to account for uncertainties in the model Hamiltonian. The method is illustrated for the lowest five levels of 28Al for which an excellent correlation is found between the size of the assigned errors and the deviations between theory and experiment

Investigation of the 26Mg(d, p)27Mg reaction

    No full text
The angular distributions of 31 protons groups from the 26Mg(d, p)27Mg reaction have been measured at Ed = 12.0 MeV with a split-pole magnetic spectrograph. Excitation energies have been determined for 29 bound states. Three new levels have been found. A DWBA analysis yields ln values for 19 levels; two different least-squares procedures are discussed for this purpose. The deduced spectroscopic factors are compared with various shell model calculations
