    A role for the ecological study in the developing world

    Retrospective case-control or prospective (followup) studies are important epidemiological tools and have provided useful infonnation on exposure disease associations. Prospective studies would be the ideal option, but m.any countries (Particularly in the developing world) do not have the necessary infrastructure to follow people up. Both retrospective and prospective studies are, however, som.etim. es conducted without due regard for their own lim.itations. These lim.itations are exacerbated when m.easures of exposure or disease are based on a single measurement and where the population under study is homogeneous with regard to exposure. The former is responsible for regression dilution bias and the latter for a lack of contrasts between exposure groups. Both factors would attenuate any relationship between exposure and disease. Ecological studies in epidemiology are weaker in design than case-control or prospective studies, but in some circumstances an ecological approach, which looks at the prevalence of an exposure or disorder in a number ofareas of varying disease rates, may offer some advantages

    Two Modes of Magnetization Switching in a Simulated Iron Nanopillar in an Obliquely Oriented Field

    Finite-temperature micromagnetics simulations are employed to study the magnetization-switching dynamics driven by a field applied at an angle to the long axis of an iron nanopillar. A bi-modal distribution in the switching times is observed, and evidence for two competing modes of magnetization-switching dynamics is presented. For the conditions studied here, temperature T=20T = 20 K and the reversal field 3160 Oe at an angle of 75∘^\circ to the long axis, approximately 70% of the switches involve unstable decay (no free-energy barrier) and 30% involve metastable decay (a free-energy barrier is crossed). The latter are indistinguishable from switches which are constrained to start at a metastable free-energy minimum. Competition between unstable and metastable decay could greatly complicate applications involving magnetization switches near the coercive field.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure

    Intrapartum epidural analgesia and breastfeeding: a prospective cohort study

    BACKGROUND Anecdotal reports suggest that the addition of fentanyl (an opioid) to epidural analgesia for women during childbirth results in difficulty establishing breastfeeding. The aim of this paper is to determine any association between epidural analgesia and 1) breastfeeding in the first week postpartum and 2) breastfeeding cessation during the first 24 weeks postpartum. METHODS A prospective cohort study of 1280 women aged > or = 16 years, who gave birth to a single live infant in the Australian Capital Territory in 1997 was conducted. Women completed questionnaires at weeks 1, 8, 16 and 24 postpartum. Breastfeeding information was collected in each of the four surveys and women were categorised as either fully breastfeeding, partially breastfeeding or not breastfeeding at all. Women who had stopped breastfeeding since the previous survey were asked when they stopped. RESULTS In the first week postpartum, 93% of women were either fully or partially breastfeeding their baby and 60% were continuing to breastfeed at 24 weeks. Intrapartum analgesia and type of birth were associated with partial breastfeeding and breastfeeding difficulties in the first postpartum week (p < 0.0001). Analgesia, maternal age and education were associated with breastfeeding cessation in the first 24 weeks (p < 0.0001), with women who had epidurals being more likely to stop breastfeeding than women who used non-pharmacological methods of pain relief (adjusted hazard ratio 2.02, 95% CI 1.53, 2.67). CONCLUSION Women in this cohort who had epidurals were less likely to fully breastfeed their infant in the few days after birth and more likely to stop breastfeeding in the first 24 weeks.     Magnetotransport in the CeIrIn5{_5} system: The influence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations

    We present an overview of magnetotransport measurements on the heavy-fermion superconductor CeIrIn5_5. Sensitive measurements of the Hall effect and magnetoresistance (MR) are used to elucidate the low temperature phase diagram of this system. The normal-state magnetotransport is highly anomalous, and experimental signatures of a pseudogap-like precursor state to superconductivity as well as evidence for two distinct scattering times governing the Hall effect and the MR are observed. Our observations point out the influence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations on the magnetotransport in this class of materials. The implications of these findings, both in the context of unconventional superconductivity in heavy-fermion systems as well as in relation to the high temperature superconducting cuprates are discussed

    Cleaning without chlorinated solvents

    Because of health and environmental concerns, many regulations have been passed in recent years regarding the use of chlorinated solvents. The Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant has had an active program to find alternatives for these solvents used in cleaning applications for the past 7 years. During this time frame, the quantity of solvents purchased has been reduced by 92 percent. The program has been a twofold effort. Vapor degreasers used in batch cleaning operations have been replaced by ultrasonic cleaning with aqueous detergent, and other organic solvents have been identified for use in hand-wiping or specialty operations. In order to qualify these alternatives for use, experimentation was conducted on cleaning ability as well as effects on subsequent operations such as welding, painting, and bonding. Cleaning ability was determined using techniques such as x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) which are capable of examining monolayer levels of contamination on a surface. Solvents have been identified for removal of rust preventative oils, lapping oils, machining coolants, lubricants, greases, and mold releases. Solvents have also been evaluated for cleaning urethane foam spray guns, swelling of urethanes, and swelling of epoxies

    First constraint on cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio from two independent telescopes

    A high signal-to-noise spectrum covering the largest number of hydrogen lines (90 H2 lines and 6 HD lines) in a high redshift object was analyzed from an observation along the sight-line to the bright quasar source J2123−-005 with the UVES spectrograph on the ESO Very Large Telescope (Paranal, Chile). This delivers a constraint on a possible variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio of Dmu/mu = (8.5 \pm 3.6_{stat} \pm 2.2_{syst}) x 10^{-6} at redshift z=2.059$, which agrees well with a recently published result on the same system observed at the Keck telescope yielding Dmu/mu = (5.6 \pm 5.5_{stat} \pm 2.9_{syst}) x 10^{-6}. Both analyses used the same robust absorption line fitting procedures with detailed consideration of systematic errors.Comment: Accepte

    Implications of Pioneer-2 magnetic field models for Jupiter's decametric radio mission

    The geometry and electron gyrofrequency were calculated for both the North and South feet of the Io-threaded flux tube at several altitudes as a function of sub-Io longitude for various multipole field models. The models predict a maximum surface gyrofrequency equal to the observed high frequency limit of the decameter-wave radio emission (DAM) and tend to favor a mechanism involving transverse propagation from a source in the Northern hemisphere. Calculations indicate that the beaming pattern of the emission may be determined by reflection from the ionosphere rather than by inherent beaming from the source region

    ATLASGAL - environments of 6.7 GHz methanol masers

    Using the 870 micron APEX Telescope large area survey of the Galaxy, we have identified 577 submillimetre continuum sources with masers from the methanol multibeam survey in the region 280deg lt ell lt 20deg; |b| lt 1deg.5 94 per cent of methanol masers in the region are associated with submillimetre dust emission. We estimate masses for tilde450 maser-associated sources and find that methanol masers are preferentially associated with massive clumps. These clumps are centrally condensed, with envelope structures that appear to be scale-free, the mean maser position being offset from the peak column density by 0 plusmn 4 arcsec. Assuming a Kroupa initial mass function and a star formation efficiency of tilde30 per cent, we find that over two-thirds of the clumps are likely to form clusters with masses gt20 M?_?. Furthermore, almost all clumps satisfy the empirical mass-size criterion for massive star formation. Bolometric luminosities taken from the literature for tilde100 clumps range between tilde100 and 106^6 L?_?. This confirms the link between methanol masers and massive young stars for 90 per cent of our sample. The Galactic distribution of sources suggests that the star formation efficiency is significantly reduced in the Galactic Centre region, compared to the rest of the survey area, where it is broadly constant, and shows a significant drop in the massive star formation rate density in the outer Galaxy. We find no enhancement in source counts towards the southern Scutum-Centaurus arm tangent at ell tilde 315deg, which suggests that this arm is not actively forming stars.Peer reviewe
