Epitaxial gallium arsenide wafers
The preparation of GaAs epitaxial layers by a vapor transport process using AsCl3, Ga and H2 was pursued to provide epitaxial wafers suitable for the fabrication of transferred electron oscillators and amplifiers operating in the subcritical region. Both n-n(+) structures, and n(++)-n-n(+) sandwich structures were grown using n(+) (Si-doped) GaAs substrates. Process variables such as the input AsCl3 concentration, gallium temperature, and substrate temperature and temperature gradient and their effects on properties are presented and discussed
Structure, bonding and morphology of hydrothermally synthesised xonotlite
The authors have systematically investigated the role of synthesis conditions upon the structure and morphology of xonotlite. Starting with a mechanochemically prepared, semicrystalline phase with Ca/Si=1, the authors have prepared a series of xonotlite samples hydrothermally, at temperatures between 200 and 250 degrees C. Analysis in each case was by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, environmental scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The authors’ use of a much lower water/solid ratio has indirectly confirmed the ‘through solution’ mechanism of xonotlite formation, where silicate dissolution is a key precursor of xonotlite formation. Concerning the role of temperature, too low a temperature (~200 degrees C) fails to yield xonotlite or leads to increased number of structural defects in the silicate chains of xonotlite and too high a temperature (>250 degrees C) leads to degradation of the xonotlite structure, through leaching of interchain calcium. Synthesis duration meanwhile leads to increased silicate polymerisation due to diminishing of the defects in the silicate chains and more perfect crystal morphologies
Efficiency considerations and the allocation of new deal funds: an examination of the public goods explanation of expenditure patterns
The uneven state-level distribution of New Deal spending has been frequently studied and a variety of economic and political models have been developed. In their article, “Does the Distribution of New Deal Spending Reflect an Optimal Provision of Public Goods?,†(Economics Bulletin, Vol. 8, No. 3, 2007. pp 1-5) Bateman and Taylor propose that much of the disparity in state-level New Deal expenditures can be explained if the creation of public goods and the spillover effects are included in economic models. Using the available wealth of data on New Deal programs, expenditures by agencies within the New Deal are examined and correlation statistics provided to test this hypothesis against the 1930 US census population density figures.New Deal, public good, spillover effects, Public Works Administration, PWA, Civil Works Administration, CWA
A new nickel-base wrought superalloy for applications up to 1033 K (1400 F)
Alloy was melted from high purity raw materials and cast ingots extruded at 1422 K. Material was hot rolled to 0.013 m diameter bar stock. Partial solution heat-treatment followed by aging produced structure of fine gamma prime precipitate reinforcing gamma matrix containing coarser blocky gamma prime particles. High-temperature optically activated GaAs power switching for aircraft digital electronic control
Gallium arsenide high-temperature devices were fabricated and assembled into an optically activated pulse-width-modulated power control for a torque motor typical of the kinds used in jet engine actuators. A bipolar heterojunction phototransistor with gallium aluminum arsenide emitter/window, a gallium arsenide junction field-effect power transistor and a gallium arsenide transient protection diode were designed and fabricated. A high-temperature fiber optic/phototransistor coupling scheme was implemented. The devices assembled into the demonstrator were successfully tested at 250 C, proving the feasibility of actuator-located switching of control power using optical signals transmitted by fibers. Assessments of the efficiency and technical merits were made for extension of this high-temperature technology to local conversion of optical power to electrical power and its control at levels useful for driving actuators. Optical power sources included in the comparisons were an infrared light-emitting diode, an injection laser diode, tungsten-halogen lamps and arc lamps. Optical-to-electrical power conversion was limited to photovoltaics located at the actuator. Impedance matching of the photovoltaic array to the load was considered over the full temperature range, -55 C to 260 C. Loss of photovoltaic efficiency at higher temperatures was taken into account. Serious losses in efficiency are: (1) in the optical source and the cooling which they may require in the assumed 125 C ambient, (2) in the decreased conversion efficiency of the gallium arsenide photovoltaic at 260 C, and (3) in impedance matching. Southern California partyboat sampling study Quarterly Report no. 7
From January 1 through March 31, 1977, Department
personnel made 100 sampling trips aboard southern California partyboats. A total of 16,400 fishes from 68 species was identified and measured.
Otoliths, for age determination studies, were removed
from 301 rockfish carcasses representing 23 species.
The 10 most common species sampled during this quarter
were bocaccio, Sebastes paucispinis (38.5%); chilipepper,
S. goodei (9.8%); widow rockfish, S. entomelas (7.7%);
blue rockfish, S. mystinus (6.2%); olive rockfish, S. serranoides (4.2%); Pacific mackerel, Scomber japonicus (2.8%); vermilion rockfish, Sebastes miniatus (2.7%); speckled rockfish, S. ovalis (2.7%); greenspotted rockfish, S. chlorostictus (2.5%); and squarespot rockfish, S. hopkinsi (2.4%).
Fishing effort during this quarter was directed almost
exclusively toward "rockcod", as it was for the same

Influence of temperature dependent inelastic scattering on the superconducting proximity effect
We have measured the differential resistance of mesoscopic gold wires of
different lengths connected to an aluminum superconductor as a function of
temperature and voltage. Our experimental results differ substantially from
theoretical predictions which assume an infinite temperature independent gap in
the superconductor. In addition to taking into account the temperature
dependence of the gap, we must also introduce a temperature dependent inelastic
scattering length in order to fit our data

Alloy possesses combination of high tensile strength at low and intermediate temperatures to 1033 K with good rupture strength at high temperatures to 1255 K. Alloy has promise for turbine disk application in future gas turbine engines and for wrought integrally bladed turbine wheel; thickness and weight of disk portion of wheel could be reduced
Qualitative Factors as Determinants of Continued Success:An Examination of eBusiness Entrepreneurial Firms Using the NewVenture Template
In this study, we analyze eBusiness entrepreneurs nominated by the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award program to ascertain whether qualitative factors are correlated with success. We find qualitative factors are incrementally informative above and beyond the information provided by quantitative factors. More specifically, firms that are able to maintain their innovative strategies by improving upon the product (or service) they offer and are able to meet the long-term needs of the customer are more likely to experience increased sales growth and have greater access to capital which results in a successful harvest strategy
