    Topological phase separation in 2D quantum lattice Bose-Hubbard system away from half-filling

    We suppose that the doping of the 2D hard-core boson system away from half-filling may result in the formation of multi-center topological inhomogeneity (defect) such as charge order (CO) bubble domain(s) with Bose superfluid (BS) and extra bosons both localized in domain wall(s), or a {\it topological} CO+BS {\it phase separation}, rather than an uniform mixed CO+BS supersolid phase. Starting from the classical model we predict the properties of the respective quantum system. The long-wavelength behavior of the system is believed to remind that of granular superconductors, CDW materials, Wigner crystals, and multi-skyrmion system akin in a quantum Hall ferromagnetic state of a 2D electron gas. To elucidate the role played by quantum effects and that of the lattice discreteness we have addressed the simplest nanoscopic counterpart of the bubble domain in a checkerboard CO phase of 2D hc-BH square lattice. It is shown that the relative magnitude and symmetry of multi-component order parameter are mainly determined by the sign of the nnnn and nnnnnn transfer integrals. In general, the topologically inhomogeneous phase of the hc-BH system away from the half-filling can exhibit the signatures both of s,ds,d, and pp symmetry of the off-diagonal order.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure

    Availability and utilizationof instructional technologies in supervision in public secondary schools during coivid-19 era in cross river state, nigeria

    This study investigated the availability and utilization of instructional technologies in supervision in public secondary schools in Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of this study, descriptive survey research design was adopted; a research question was raised and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The population of this study comprised the entire 279 respondents drawn through census approach from all the public secondary schools in Cross River State.Data collection was carried out with the use of researchers’ constructed instrument titled: Availability and Utilization of Instructional Technologies in School Supervision during COVID-19Pandemic Survey (AUITSSCOVID-19PS). The instrument was validated and reliability was established through Cronbach Alpha analysis which yielded .90 hence indicating high internal consistency in achieving the purpose of this study. In order to answer the research question, data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation while the hypotheses were tested with independent t-test statistical techniques. The results showed that the availability of instructional technologies used in school supervision is very low. It was also found that the extent of utilization of instructional technologies in school supervision is very low. Based on the findings and discussion, conclusions were made. It was therefore recommended among others that the government should ensure that adequate instructional technologies are provided and utilized in supervising secondary schools especially during this period of global COVID-19 pandemic

    We report the observation from monolayers of eicosanoic acid in the L′2 phase of three distinct out-of-plane first-order diffraction peaks, indicating molecular tilt in a nonsymmetry direction and hence the absence of mirror symmetry. At lower pressures the molecules tilt in the direction of their nearest neighbors. In this region we find a structural transition, which we tentatively identify as the rotator-herringbone transition L2d−L2h

    Spectral aerosol extinction (SpEx): a new instrument for in situ ambient aerosol extinction measurements across the UV/visible wavelength range

    We introduce a new instrument for the measurement of in situ ambient aerosol extinction over the 300– 700 nm wavelength range, the spectral aerosol extinction (SpEx) instrument. This measurement capability is envisioned to complement existing in situ instrumentation, allowing for simultaneous measurement of the evolution of aerosol optical, chemical, and physical characteristics in the ambient environment. In this work, a detailed description of the instrument is provided along with characterization tests performed in the laboratory. Measured spectra of NO2 and polystyrene latex spheres (PSLs) agreed well with theoretical calculations. Good agreement was also found with simultaneous aerosol extinction measurements at 450, 530, and 630 nm using CAPS PMex instruments in a series of 22 tests including nonabsorbing compounds, dusts, soot, and black and brown carbon analogs. SpEx measurements are expected to help identify the presence of ambient brown carbon due to its 300 nm lower wavelength limit compared to measurements limited to longer UV and visible wavelengths. Extinction spectra obtained with SpEx contain more information than can be conveyed by a simple power law fit (typically represented by Ångström exponents). Planned future improvements aim to lower detection limits and ruggedize the instrument for mobile operation

    High-resolution 21-cm observations of low-column density gas clumps in the Milky Way halo

    We study the properties of low-column density gas clumps in the halo of the Milky Way based on high-resolution 21-cm observations. Using interferometric data from the WSRT and the VLA we study HI emission at low-, intermediate- and high radial velocities along four lines of sight towards quasars. Along these sightlines we previously detected weak CaII and NaI absorbers in their optical spectra. The analysis of the high-resolution HI data reveals the presence of several compact and cold clumps of neutral gas at velocities similar to the optical absorption. The clumps have narrow HI line widths in the range of 1.8 to 13 km/s, yielding upper limits for the kinetic temperature of the gas of 70 to 3700 K. The neutral gas has low HI column densities in the range of 5E18 to 3E19 1/cm^2. All clumps have angular sizes of only a few arcminutes. Our high-resolution 21-cm observations indicate that many of the CaII and NaI absorbers seen in our optical quasar spectra are associated with low-column density HI clumps at small angular scales. This suggests that next to the massive, high-column density neutral gas clouds in the halo (the common 21-cm LVCs, IVCs, and HVCs) there exists a population of low-mass, neutral gas structures in the halo that remain mostly unseen in the existing 21-cm all-sky surveys of IVCs and HVCs. The estimated thermal gas pressures of the detected HI clumps are consistent with what is expected from theoretical models of gas in the inner and outer Milky Way halo.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

    Kinematic modelling of disk galaxies I. A new method to fit tilted rings to data cubes

    This is the first of a series of papers in which the kinematics of disk galaxies over a range of scales is scrutinised employing spectroscopy. A fundamental aspect of these studies is presented here: the new publicly available software tool TiRiFiC (http://www.astro.uni-bonn.de/~gjozsa/tirific.html) enables a direct fit of a ``tilted-ring model'' to spectroscopic data cubes. The algorithm generates model data cubes from the tilted-ring parametrisation of a rotating disk, which are automatically adjusted to reach an optimum fit via a chi-squared minimisation method to an observed data cube. The structure of the new software, the shortcomings of the previously available programs to produce a tilted-ring model, and the performance of TiRiFiC are discussed. Our method is less affected by the well-known problem of beam smearing that occurs when fitting to the velocity field. Since with our method we fit many data points in a data cube simultaneously, TiRiFiC is sensitive to very faint structures and can hence be used to derive tilted-ring models significantly extending in radius beyond those derived from a velocity field. The software is able to parametrise HI disks of galaxies that are intersected by the line-of-sight twice or more, i.e. if the disks are heavily warped, and/or with a significant shift of the projected centre of rotation, and/or if seen edge-on. Furthermore, our method delivers the surface-brightness profile of the examined galaxy in addition to the orientational parameters and the rotation curve. In order to derive kinematic and morphological models of disk galaxies, especially reliable rotation curves, a direct-fit method as implemented in our code should be the tool of choice.Comment: 37 pages, 24 figures.     Mechanism of carrier-induced ferromagnetism in magnetic semiconductors

    Taking into account both random impurity distribution and thermal fluctuations of localized spins, we have performed a model calculation for the carrier (hole) state in Ga1−x_{1-x}Mnx_xAs by using the coherent potential approximation (CPA). The result reveals that a {\it p}-hole in the band tail of Ga1−x_{1-x}Mnx_xAs is not like a free carrier but is rather virtually bounded to impurity sites. The carrier spin strongly couples to the localized {\it d} spins on Mn ions. The hopping of the carrier among Mn sites causes the ferromagnetic ordering of the localized spins through the double-exchange mechanism. The Curie temperature obtained by using conventional parameters agrees well with the experimental result.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Medication use, renin-angiotensin system inhibitors, and acute care utilization after hospitalization in patients with chronic kidney disease.

    OBJECTIVES: The aims of this secondary analysis were to: (a) characterize medication use following hospital discharge for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and (b) investigate relationships of medication use with the primary composite outcome of acute care utilization 90 days after hospitalization. METHODS: The CKD-Medication Intervention Trial (CKD-MIT) enrolled acutely ill hospitalized patients with CKD stages 3-5 not dialyzed (CKD 3-5 ND). In this post hoc analysis, data for medication use were characterized, and the relationship of medication use with the primary outcome was evaluated using Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS: Participants were taking a mean of 12.6 (standard deviation=5.1) medications, including medications from a wide variety of medication classes. Nearly half of study participants were taking angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB). ACE inhibitor/ARB use was associated with decreased risk of the primary outcome (hazard ratio=0.51; 95% confidence interval 0.28-0.95; CONCLUSIONS: A large number, variety, and complexity of medications were used by hospitalized patients with CKD 3-5 ND. ACE inhibitor or ARB use at hospital discharge was associated with a decreased risk of 90-day acute care utilization
