Biodiversity of inland saltscapes of the Iberian Peninsula
The Iberian Peninsula hosts a wide variety of inland saltscapes, from man-made solar evaporation salterns to hyper-saline lakes and salt rivers, most of them unknown to other European countries. The present contribution deals with this diversity of saltscapes, briefly introduces their main features and locations, and presents a general overview of their conservation status. Some of their natural values are not even well understood by the scientists themselves, and therefore they are very rare and fragile and in need of protection. However, many of these natural saltscapes have been and are currently under threat, having been desiccated, used as waste dumps or polluted with irrigation runoff. With respect to artificial salinas, these have been halting their activity in the last decades. Generally, historically, salt-making operations occurred where hypersaline environments already existed. These locations were converted into commercial operations. As these, too, are phased out, the loss of production has negatively affected the halophilic plant and animal communities. These results are based on empirical field observations, and a comprehensive inventory and status report of Iberian saltscapes is needed to support the ideas presented here
New strategies for the enhancement and promotion of local identity in coastal areas. The case of the Sorrento peninsula
The paper proposes to consider the port areas as strategic nodes for the valorisation of the territory. In these areas the reuse of buildings represents the opportunity to integrate new economic and cultural activities for tourist promotion and enhancement of local resources.
The localisation of new cultural, recreational and promotional activities can also increase territorial competitiveness and attractiveness and employment rate, related to functional mix and economic activities.
In many contemporary cities, recent rehabilitation processes carried out this strategy, including the reuse of existing buildings in the ports by new activities especially connected with the maritime tradition of the city.
The proposal aims to verify the opportunity to build a strategy based on valorisation and management of excellent coastal areas characterized by a network of small ports in small cities. The Sorrento Peninsula (Italy) represents an emblematic case study in order to enhance the role of port areas for the promotion of natural, cultural and historical resources in a systemic vision of the territory.
The reuse of existing buildings for tourism promotion together with the rehabilitation of the pedestrian paths system can contribute to realize a network that â starting from port areas â improves accessibility and usability
Evidence for a GABAergic system in rodent and human testis: Local GABA production and GABA receptors
The major neurotransmitter of the central nervous system, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), exerts its actions through GABA(A), GABA(B) and GABA(C) receptors. GABA and GABA receptors are, however, also present in several non-neural tissues, including the endocrine organs pituitary, pancreas and testis. In the case of the rat testis, GABA appears to be linked to the regulation of steroid synthesis by Leydig cells via GABA(A) receptors, but neither testicular sources of GABA, nor the precise nature of testicular GABA receptors are fully known. We examined these points in rat, mouse, hamster and human testicular samples. RT-PCR followed by sequencing showed that the GABA-synthesizing enzymes glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) 65 and/or GAD67, as well as the vesicular GABA transporter vesicular inhibitory amino acid transporter (VIAAT/VGAT) are expressed. Testicular GAD in the rat was shown to be functionally active by using a GAD assay, and Western blot analysis confirmed the presence of GAD65 and GAD67. Interstitial cells, most of which are Leydig cells according to their location and morphological characteristics, showed positive immunoreaction for GAD and VIAAT/VGAT proteins. In addition, several GABA(A) receptor subunits (alpha1-3, beta1-3, gamma1-3), as well as GABAB receptor subunits R1 and R2, were detected by RT-PCR. Western blot analysis confirmed the results for GABA(A) receptor subunits beta2/3 in the rat, and immunohistochemistry identified interstitial Leydig cells to possess immunoreactive GABA(A) receptor subunits beta2/3 and alpha1. The presence of GABA(A) receptor subunit alpha1 mRNA in interstitial cells of the rat testis was further shown after laser microdissection followed by RT-PCR analysis. In summary, these results describe molecular details of the components of an intratesticular GABAergic system expressed in the endocrine compartment of rodent and human testes. While the physiological significance of this peripheral neuroendocrine system conserved throughout species remains to be elucidated, its mere presence in humans suggests the possibility that clinically used drugs might be able to interfere with testicular function. Light Element Abundance Patterns in the Orion Association: I) HST Observations of Boron in G-dwarfs
The boron abundances for two young solar-type members of the Orion
association, BD -6 1250 and HD 294297, are derived from HST STIS spectra of the
B I transition at 2496.771 A. The best-fit boron abundances for the target
stars are 0.13 and 0.44 dex lower than the solar meteoritic value of log
e(B)=2.78. An anticorrelation of boron and oxygen is found for Orion when these
results are added to previous abundances obtained for 4 B-type stars and the
G-type star BD -5 1317. An analysis of the uncertainties in the abundance
calculations indicates that the observed anticorrelation is probably real. The
B versus O relation observed in the Orion association does not follow the
positive correlation of boron versus oxygen which is observed for the field
stars with roughly solar metallicity. The observed anticorrelation can be
accounted for by a simple model in which two poorly mixed components of gas
(supernova ejecta and boron-enriched ambient medium) contribute to the new
stars that form within the lifetime of the association. This model predicts an

A Spectroscopic Analysis of the California-Kepler Survey Sample. I. Stellar Parameters, Planetary Radii, and a Slope in the Radius Gap
We present results from a quantitative spectroscopic analysis conducted on archival Keck/HIRES high-resolution spectra from the California-Kepler Survey (CKS) sample of transiting planetary host stars identified from the Kepler mission. The spectroscopic analysis was based on a carefully selected set of Fe i and Fe ii lines, resulting in precise values for the stellar parameters of effective temperature (Teff) and surface gravity (log g). Combining the stellar parameters with Gaia DR2 parallaxes and precise distances, we derived both stellar and planetary radii for our sample, with a median internal uncertainty of 2.8% in the stellar radii and 3.7% in the planetary radii. An investigation into the distribution of planetary radii confirmed the bimodal nature of this distribution for the small-radius planets found in previous studies, with peaks at ~1.47 ± 0.05 and ~2.72 ± 0.10 Râ with a gap at ~1.9 Râ. Previous studies that modeled planetary formation that is dominated by photoevaporation predicted this bimodal radii distribution and the presence of a radius gap, or photoevaporation valley. Our results are in overall agreement with these models, as well as core powered mass-loss models. TreatmentPatterns:An R package to facilitate the standardized development and analysis of treatment patterns across disease domains
Background and objectives: There is an increasing interest to use real-world data to illustrate how patients with specific medical conditions are treated in real life. Insight in the current treatment practices helps to improve and tailor patient care, but is often held back by a lack of data interoperability and a high-level of required resources. We aimed to provide an easy tool that overcomes these barriers to support the standardized development and analysis of treatment patterns for a wide variety of medical conditions. Methods: We formally defined the process of constructing treatment pathways and implemented this in an open-source R package TreatmentPatterns (https://github.com/mi-erasmusmc/TreatmentPatterns) to enable a reproducible and timely analysis of treatment patterns. Results: The developed package supports the analysis of treatment patterns of a study population of interest. We demonstrate the functionality of the package by analyzing the treatment patterns of three common chronic diseases (type II diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and depression) in the Dutch Integrated Primary Care Information (IPCI) database. Conclusion: TreatmentPatterns is a tool to make the analysis of treatment patterns more accessible, more standardized, and more interpretation friendly. We hope it thereby contributes to the accumulation of knowledge on real-world treatment patterns across disease domains. We encourage researchers to further adjust and add custom analysis to the R package based on their research needs.</p
