    High magnetic field transport measurement of charge-ordered Pr0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_3 strained thin films

    We have investigated the magnetic-field-induced phase transition of charge-ordered (CO) Pr0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_3 thin films, deposited onto (100)-oriented LaAlO3_3 and (100)-oriented SrTiO3_3 substrates using the pulsed laser deposition technique, by measuring the transport properties with magnetic fields up to 22T. The transition to a metallic state is observed on both substrates by application of a critical magnetic field (HC>10TH_C>10T at 60K). The value of the field required to destroy the charge-ordered insulating state, lower than the bulk compound, depends on both the substrate and the thickness of the film. The difference of the critical magnetic field between the films and the bulk material is explained by the difference of in-plane parameters at low temperature (below the CO transition). Finally, these results confirm that the robustness of the CO state, depends mainly on the stress induced by the difference in the thermal dilatations between the film and the substrate.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures.     Test Results of the Third LHC Main Quadrupole Magnet Prototype at CEA/Saclay

    The construction of the third second-generation main quadrupole magnet prototype for LHC has been completed at CEA/Saclay in November 2000. The magnet was tested at 1.9 K. Similarly to the two first ones, this prototype has exceeded the operating current in one training step and exhibited excellent training memory after a thermal cycle. This paper describes the quench performance and quench start localization determined by means of voltage-taps and a quench antenna system developed in collaboration with KEK. As this magnet was equipped with capacitive gauges, the stresses during cool-down and powering have been recorded and are in agreement with FE computations. The newly designed quench heaters have improved efficiency and reproducibility compared to those of the first generation. Magnetic measurements have been performed at various stages. The cold measurements show minor differences with those at room temperature and are similar to those of the two first magnets of this design. These results prove that the magnets are mechanically stable and confirm the design retained for the series production of the 400 LHC main quadrupoles

    Cryogenic Design of the 43 T LNCMI Grenoble Hybrid Magnet

    AbstractThe association of two inner resistive coils (Polyhelix and Bitter) producing 34.5 T with an outer NbTi superconducting coil producing 8.5 T to obtain a 43 T hybrid magnet is a technical challenge. Accidental failure modes leading to complex electromagnetic behaviors and large transient dynamical forces should be anticipated. These considerations lead to a reinforced design and a thermo-hydraulic strategy to limit the overpressure. The cryostat has been designed with innovative thermo-mechanical supports sustaining the coil at 1.8 K-1200 hPa and the eddy current shield at 30 K, both being possibly overloaded by high dynamic forces in the worst accidental failure case

    Magnetic states and spin-glass properties in Bi0.67Ca0.33MnO3: macroscopic ac measurements and neutron scattering

    We report on the magnetic properties of the manganite Bi_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_3 (x=0.33) at low temperature. The analysis of the field expansion of the ac susceptibility and the observation of aging properties make clear that a spin glass phase appears below T = 39K, in the presence of magnetic order. Neutron scattering shows both magnetic Bragg scattering and magnetic diffusion at small angles, and confirms this coexistence. In contrast to Pr_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_3 (x=0.3-0.33) which exhibits a mesoscopic phase separation responsible for a field driven percolation, the glassy and short range ferromagnetic order observed here does not cause colossal magnetoresistance (CMR).Comment: accepted in Phys Rev

    p.Ala541Thr variant of MEN1 gene: A non deleterious polymorphism or a pathogenic mutation?

    Context Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant inherited syndrome, related to mutations in the MEN1 gene. Controversial data suggest that the nonsynonymous p.Ala541Thr variant, usually considered as a non-pathogenic polymorphism, may be associated with an increased risk of MEN1-related lesions in carriers. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the pathogenic influence of the p.Ala541Thr variant on clinical and functional outcomes. Patients and methods We analysed a series of 55 index patients carrying the p.Ala541Thr variant. Their clinical profile was compared to that of 117 MEN1 patients. The biological impact of the p.Ala541Thr variant on cell growth was additionally investigated on menin-deficient Leydig cell tumour (LCT)10 cells generated from Men1+/Men1− heterozygous knock-out mice, and compared with wild type (WT). Results The mean age at first appearance of endocrine lesions was similar in both p.Ala541Thr carriers and MEN1 patients, but no p.Ala541Thr patient had more than one cardinal MEN1 lesion at initial diagnosis. A second MEN1 lesion was diagnosed in 13% of MEN1 patients and in 7% of p.Ala541Thr carriers in the year following preliminary diagnosis. Functional studies on LCT10 cells showed that overexpression of the p.Ala541Thr variant did not inhibit cell growth, which is in direct contrast to results obtained from investigation of WT menin protein. Conclusion Taken together, these data raise the question of a potential pathogenicity of the p.Ala541Thr missense variant of menin that commonly occurs within the general population. Additional studies are required to investigate whether it may be involved in a low-penetrance MEN1 phenotype

    Marriage “sharia style”: everyday practices of Islamic morality in England

    The growing visibility of Islam in the public spaces of Western societies is often interpreted in the media as a sign of Muslim radicalisation. This article questions this postulate by examining the flourishing Muslim marriage industry in the UK. It argues that these ‘halal’ services, increasingly popular among the young generation of British Muslims, reflect the semantic shifting of categories away from the repertoire of Islamic jurisprudence to cultural and identity labels visible in public space. Informed by long-term ethnographic fieldwork in the British field of Islamic law, this article examines a Muslim speed-dating event, which took place in central London in 2013. It investigates how Islamic morality is maintained and negotiated in everyday social interactions rather than cultivated via discipline and the pursuit of virtuous dispositions. Using Goffman’s “frame analysis” and his interpretation of the social as a space of “performances” as well as recent anthropological reflections on “ordinary ethics” (Lambek) and “everyday Islam” (Schielke, Osella and Soares), it examines the potential for such practices to define the contours of a new public culture where difference is celebrated as a form of distinction

    A Human TREK-1/HEK Cell Line: A Highly Efficient Screening Tool for Drug Development in Neurological Diseases

    TREK-1 potassium channels are involved in a number of physiopathological processes such as neuroprotection, pain and depression. Molecules able to open or to block these channels can be clinically important. Having a cell model for screening such molecules is of particular interest. Here, we describe the development of the first available cell line that constituvely expresses the TREK-1 channel. The TREK-1 channel expressed by the h-TREK-1/HEK cell line has conserved all its modulation properties. It is opened by stretch, pH, polyunsaturated fatty acids and by the neuroprotective molecule, riluzole and it is blocked by spadin or fluoxetine. We also demonstrate that the h-TREK-1/HEK cell line is protected against ischemia by using the oxygen-glucose deprivation model
