    Ecological and Genomic Attributes of Novel Bacterial Taxa That Thrive in Subsurface Soil Horizons.

    While most bacterial and archaeal taxa living in surface soils remain undescribed, this problem is exacerbated in deeper soils, owing to the unique oligotrophic conditions found in the subsurface. Additionally, previous studies of soil microbiomes have focused almost exclusively on surface soils, even though the microbes living in deeper soils also play critical roles in a wide range of biogeochemical processes. We examined soils collected from 20 distinct profiles across the United States to characterize the bacterial and archaeal communities that live in subsurface soils and to determine whether there are consistent changes in soil microbial communities with depth across a wide range of soil and environmental conditions. We found that bacterial and archaeal diversity generally decreased with depth, as did the degree of similarity of microbial communities to those found in surface horizons. We observed five phyla that consistently increased in relative abundance with depth across our soil profiles: Chloroflexi, Nitrospirae, Euryarchaeota, and candidate phyla GAL15 and Dormibacteraeota (formerly AD3). Leveraging the unusually high abundance of Dormibacteraeota at depth, we assembled genomes representative of this candidate phylum and identified traits that are likely to be beneficial in low-nutrient environments, including the synthesis and storage of carbohydrates, the potential to use carbon monoxide (CO) as a supplemental energy source, and the ability to form spores. Together these attributes likely allow members of the candidate phylum Dormibacteraeota to flourish in deeper soils and provide insight into the survival and growth strategies employed by the microbes that thrive in oligotrophic soil environments.IMPORTANCE Soil profiles are rarely homogeneous. Resource availability and microbial abundances typically decrease with soil depth, but microbes found in deeper horizons are still important components of terrestrial ecosystems. By studying 20 soil profiles across the United States, we documented consistent changes in soil bacterial and archaeal communities with depth. Deeper soils harbored communities distinct from those of the more commonly studied surface horizons. Most notably, we found that the candidate phylum Dormibacteraeota (formerly AD3) was often dominant in subsurface soils, and we used genomes from uncultivated members of this group to identify why these taxa are able to thrive in such resource-limited environments. Simply digging deeper into soil can reveal a surprising number of novel microbes with unique adaptations to oligotrophic subsurface conditions

    Understanding the management of electronic test result notifications in the outpatient setting

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Notifying clinicians about abnormal test results through electronic health record (EHR) -based "alert" notifications may not always lead to timely follow-up of patients. We sought to understand barriers, facilitators, and potential interventions for safe and effective management of abnormal test result delivery via electronic alerts.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We conducted a qualitative study consisting of six 6-8 member focus groups (N = 44) at two large, geographically dispersed Veterans Affairs facilities. Participants included full-time primary care providers, and personnel representing diagnostic services (radiology, laboratory) and information technology. We asked participants to discuss barriers, facilitators, and suggestions for improving timely management and follow-up of abnormal test result notifications and encouraged them to consider technological issues, as well as broader, human-factor-related aspects of EHR use such as organizational, personnel, and workflow.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Providers reported receiving a large number of alerts containing information unrelated to abnormal test results, many of which were believed to be unnecessary. Some providers also reported lacking proficiency in use of certain EHR features that would enable them to manage alerts more efficiently. Suggestions for improvement included improving display and tracking processes for critical alerts in the EHR, redesigning clinical workflow, and streamlining policies and procedures related to test result notification.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Providers perceive several challenges for fail-safe electronic communication and tracking of abnormal test results. A multi-dimensional approach that addresses technology as well as the many non-technological factors we elicited is essential to design interventions to reduce missed test results in EHRs.</p

However, although it is believed that the higher the level of BPM maturity the greater the success of the organization, experience shows that this relationship is not always possible to prove. The purpose of this study is to help clarify the relationship between the level of BPM maturity and the success of an organization. This was done through the implementation of a case study-based research within a global company, focusing on the shared services organization. An analysis of the existing BPM maturity models and its level of coverage of BPM core areas was conducted to select the most suitable BPM maturity model to conduct the assessment of the current BPM maturity level. It was also established a framework to characterize the success of an organization. These two inputs, along with information gathered to understand implemented process improvements, were the basis for conducting the research. Results show a successful organization, with a high maturity level according to the BPM OMG maturity model, that has been investing in continually improving its processes with a strong focus on digital transformation. The identified benefits from a high level of BPM maturity, namely improved productivity, cost reduction, error & risk prevention, higher agility, employee upskilling and knowledge retention, were shown to have a positive influence in the majority of the dimensions used to characterize the success of the organization.authorsversionpublishe

    Study of the reaction dynamics of Li+HF, HCl by the crossed molecular beams method

    The reactions of (I) Li + HF {yields} LiF + H and (II) Li + HCl {yields} LiCl + H have been studied by the crossed molecular beams method. Angular distributions [N({theta})] of product molecules have been measured at 4 collision energies (E{sub c}) ranging from about 2 to 9 kcal/mole and time-of-flight (TOF) measurements of product velocity distribution were made at approximately E{sub c} = 3 and 9 kcal/mole for both reactions (I) and (II). The combined N({theta}) and TOF results were used to generate contour maps of lithium-halide product flux in angle and recoil velocity in the center-of-mass (c.m.) frame. For reaction (I) at E{sub c} = 3 kcal/mole the c.m. angular distribution [T({theta})] shows evidence of complex formation with near forward-backward symmetry; slightly favored backward peaking is observed. The shape of this T({theta}) indicates there is significant parallel or antiparallel spatial orientation of initial and final orbital angular momentum {rvec L} and {rvec L}&#x27;, even though with H departing L&#x27; must be rather small and {rvec L} = {rvec J}&#x27;, where {rvec J}&#x27; is the final rotational angular momentum vector. It is deduced that coplanar reaction geometries are strongly favored. At E{sub c} = 8.7 kcal/mole the T({theta}) of reaction (I) becomes strongly forward peaked. The product translational energy distributions P(E{sub T}&#x27;) at both these collision energies give an average E{sub T}&#x27; of ~55% of the total available energy; this appears consistent with a theoretically calculated late exit barrier to reaction. The T({theta}) at E{sub c} = 2.9 and 9.2 kcal/mole for reaction (II) are forward-sideways peaked. Most of the available energy (~70%) goes into recoil velocity at both E{sub c} for LiCl formation. This suggests a late energy release for this 11 kcal/mole exoergic reaction. Both reactions (I) and (II) show evidence of no more than a minor partitioning of energy into product vibrational excitation. Integral reactive cross sections ({sigma}{sub R}) are evaluated by integrating the product distributions in the c.m. frame and using small angle nonreactive scattering of Li as an absolute calibrant. Values of {sigma}{sub R} are: for LiF formation {sigma}{sub R} ~ 0.8 {Angstrom}{sup 2} and 0.94 {Angstrom}{sup 2} at E{sub c} = 3 and 8.7 kcal/mole, while for LiCl formation {sigma}{sub R} = 27 {Angstrom}{sup 2} and 42 {Angstrom}{sup 2} at E{sub c} = 2.9 and 9.2 kcal/mole, with estimated absolute and relative uncertainties of a factor of 2, and 30%, respectively. Average opacities for reaction have been estimated from the reaction cross sections and the extent of rotational excitation of products to be about 0.1 for reaction (I) and 1 for reaction (II), for L values allowed to react. These results are discussed in some detail with regard to the kinematic constraints, reaction dynamics and potential energy surfaces for these two reactions, and related experimental and theoretical work are noted. In addition, angular distributions of nonreactive scattering of Li off HF and HCl are measured at 4 different E{sub c} each. Rainbow structure is observed at low E{sub c} and the angular distributions are fit by a spherically symmetric piecewise analytic potential. The resulting values of the potential&#x27;s well depth ({epsilon}) and minimum position (r{sub m} ) are: for Li + HF {epsilon} = 0.46 kcal/mole and r{sub m} = 4.34 {Angstrom} and for Li + HCl {epsilon} = 0.32 kcal/mole and r{sub m} = 4.7 {Angstrom}. These results differ significantly from some earlier estimates based on the measurements of integral scattering cross sections

    Remuneration and recidivism: The long-term impact of unemployment compensation on ex-offenders

    The relationship between unemployment and crime is the subject of research and debate. We present evidence that suggests that recidivism among ex-offenders can be reduced by providing unemployment compensation available immediately after their release from prison. A California program made such benefits—transitional aid—available during the late 1970s and early 1980s.     Testbed on MANET (ToM): private testbed facility for MANET Experiment

    This article aims to share how to create a minimum MANET testbed facility as a requirement for evaluation of MANET research. Testbed facility that we have developed is called as Testbed on MANET or abbreviation ToM. We chose to use single board computer (SBC) to represent mobile devices in MANET. ToM facility and can be used either in a static mesh network or in a dynamic network topology, where each node in the testbed can move according to the needs of the researcher. To realize a real world node mobility in ToM, we use mobile robot technology and mobile robot that we have develop, where we named it as ToMRobot. Our experience in developing a ToM facility proves that with today’s technological developments, the private MANET testbed facility can be developed more easily at low cost

    National Security vs Criminal law. Perspectives, Doubts and Concerns on the Criminalisation of Organised Crime in England and Wales

    This paper will interpret and critically analyse the new offence for organised crime in England and Wales (Section 45 of the Serious Crime Act 2015) from a criminological perspective in light of evidence found in research in the country. It will argue that changes in the law relate to changes in political narratives rather than to variations in the criminal panorama of organised crime. It will discuss these changes within three perspectives, which address various levels of concern: a narrative perspective, which reflects on the overlapping of meanings in the use of the words ‘organised crime’; an evolution perspective, which reflects on the origins of the new participation offences with reference to both national and international pressures; a management perspective, which reflects on some of the immediate effects of the new offences of organised crime on the criminal justice system. This paper will conclude that political narratives have indeed influenced criminal policy, while there is no significant change in the phenomenon of organised crime to justify such narratives

    Reduced costs with bisoprolol treatment for heart failure - An economic analysis of the second Cardiac Insufficiency Bisoprolol Study (CIBIS-II)

    Background Beta-blockers, used as an adjunctive to diuretics, digoxin and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, improve survival in chronic heart failure. We report a prospectively planned economic analysis of the cost of adjunctive beta-blocker therapy in the second Cardiac Insufficiency BIsoprolol Study (CIBIS II). Methods Resource utilization data (drug therapy, number of hospital admissions, length of hospital stay, ward type) were collected prospectively in all patients in CIBIS . These data were used to determine the additional direct costs incurred, and savings made, with bisoprolol therapy. As well as the cost of the drug, additional costs related to bisoprolol therapy were added to cover the supervision of treatment initiation and titration (four outpatient clinic/office visits). Per them (hospital bed day) costings were carried out for France, Germany and the U.K. Diagnosis related group costings were performed for France and the U.K. Our analyses took the perspective of a third party payer in France and Germany and the National Health Service in the U.K. Results Overall, fewer patients were hospitalized in the bisoprolol group, there were fewer hospital admissions perpatient hospitalized, fewer hospital admissions overall, fewer days spent in hospital and fewer days spent in the most expensive type of ward. As a consequence the cost of care in the bisoprolol group was 5-10% less in all three countries, in the per them analysis, even taking into account the cost of bisoprolol and the extra initiation/up-titration visits. The cost per patient treated in the placebo and bisoprolol groups was FF35 009 vs FF31 762 in France, DM11 563 vs DM10 784 in Germany and pound 4987 vs pound 4722 in the U.K. The diagnosis related group analysis gave similar results. Interpretation Not only did bisoprolol increase survival and reduce hospital admissions in CIBIS II, it also cut the cost of care in so doing. This `win-win' situation of positive health benefits associated with cost savings is Favourable from the point of view of both the patient and health care systems. These findings add further support for the use of beta-blockers in chronic heart failure
