Nb3Sn wire shape and cross sectional area inhomogeneity in Rutherford cables

During Rutherford cable production the wires are plastically deformed and their initially round shape is distorted. Using X-ray absorption tomography we have determined the 3D shape of an unreacted Nb3Sn 11 T dipole Rutherford cable, and of a reacted and impregnated Nb3Sn cable double stack. State-of-the-art image processing was applied to correct for tomographic artefacts caused by the large cable aspect ratio, for the segmentation of the individual wires and subelement bundles inside the wires, and for the calculation of the wire cross sectional area and shape variations. The 11 T dipole cable cross section oscillates by 2% with a frequency of 1.24 mm (1/80 of the transposition pitch length of the 40 wire cable). A comparatively stronger cross sectional area variation is observed in the individual wires at the thin edge of the keystoned cable where the wire aspect ratio is largest.Comment: 6 pages, 11 figures, presented at EUCAS 201

The Cross-Wavelet Transform and Analysis of Quasiperiodic Behavior in the Pearson-Readhead VLBI Survey Sources

We introduce an algorithm for applying a cross-wavelet transform to analysis of quasiperiodic variations in a time-series, and introduce significance tests for the technique. We apply a continuous wavelet transform and the cross-wavelet algorithm to the Pearson-Readhead VLBI survey sources using data obtained from the University of Michigan 26-m parabloid at observing frequencies of 14.5, 8.0, and 4.8 GHz. Thirty of the sixty-two sources were chosen to have sufficient data for analysis, having at least 100 data points for a given time-series. Of these thirty sources, a little more than half exhibited evidence for quasiperiodic behavior in at least one observing frequency, with a mean characteristic period of 2.4 yr and standard deviation of 1.3 yr. We find that out of the thirty sources, there were about four time scales for every ten time series, and about half of those sources showing quasiperiodic behavior repeated the behavior in at least one other observing frequency.Comment: Revised version, accepted by ApJ. 17 pages, 13 figures, color figures included as gifs, seperate from the text. Nonequilibrium phase transition in a non integrable zero-range process

The present work is an endeavour to determine analytically features of the stationary measure of a non-integrable zero-range process, and to investigate the possible existence of phase transitions for such a nonequilibrium model. The rates defining the model do not satisfy the constraints necessary for the stationary measure to be a product measure. Even in the absence of a drive, detailed balance with respect to this measure is violated. Analytical and numerical investigations on the complete graph demonstrate the existence of a first-order phase transition between a fluid phase and a condensed phase, where a single site has macroscopic occupation. The transition is sudden from an imbalanced fluid where both species have densities larger than the critical density, to a critical neutral fluid and an imbalanced condensate

Deriving Bisimulation Congruences: 2-categories vs precategories

G-relative pushouts (GRPOs) have recently been proposed by the authors as a new foundation for Leifer and Milner’s approach to deriving labelled bisimulation congruences from reduction systems. This paper develops the theory of GRPOs further, arguing that they provide a simple and powerful basis towards a comprehensive solution. As an example, we construct GRPOs in a category of ‘bunches and wirings.’ We then examine the approach based on Milner’s precategories and Leifer’s functorial reactive systems, and show that it can be recast in a much simpler way into the 2-categorical theory of GRPOs
