    Get PDF
14th Nordic Process Control Workshop - Espoo, Finland Duration: 23 Aug 2007 → 25 Aug 2007This paper presents a non linear model predictive controller for a PEM fuel cell for which the starvation control is the main objective. A second order Volterra model for control is obtained using input/output data for which the power supplied by the fuel cell is considered as a measurable disturbance. The controller developed allows to solve the nonlinear objective function in a way that it can be actually implemented in fast systems like Fuel cells. The use of a nonlinear controller is justified while comparing the outcome obtained with a linear controller of the same class

A dynamic growth model for Pinus radiata D. Don plantations in El Bierzo (Spain) was developed with data from two inventories of permanent plots, of between 7 and 36 years old, established by the University of León. In this model, stand conditions at any point in time are defined by three state variables (stand basal area, number of trees per hectare and dominant height).Themodel includes three transition functions derived by the generalized algebraic difference approach to enable projection of the state variables at any particular time. Once they are known, the number of trees in each diameter class is estimated with a distribution function, by recovery of the parameters of theWeibull function by use of the moments method. Finally, a generalized height-diameter function and a taper function allow estimation of total or merchantable stand volume. The model provides satisfactory predictions for a time interval of three years. Simulation of the growth of four stands under two silvicultural regimes and two different sites confirm that the estimates provided by the overall model adequately represent the effects of both stand density and site quality. Other applications for the model are analysed and discussed.

Structural insight into the TRIAP1/PRELI-like domain family of mitochondrial phospholipid transfer complexes

The composition of the mitochondrial membrane is important for its architecture and proper function. Mitochondria depend on a tightly regulated supply of phospholipid via intra-mitochondrial synthesis and by direct import from the endoplasmic reticulum. The Ups1/PRELI-like family together with its mitochondrial chaperones (TRIAP1/Mdm35) represent a unique heterodimeric lipid transfer system that is evolutionary conserved from yeast to man. Work presented here provides new atomic resolution insight into the function of a human member of this system. Crystal structures of free TRIAP1 and the TRIAP1–SLMO1 complex reveal how the PRELI domain is chaperoned during import into the intermembrane mitochondrial space. The structural resemblance of PRELI-like domain of SLMO1 with that of mammalian phoshatidylinositol transfer proteins (PITPs) suggest that they share similar lipid transfer mechanisms, in which access to a buried phospholipid-binding cavity is regulated by conformationally adaptable loops

Scope: to present a brief description of this material in order to support the identification of the newly found material. Methodology: Water samples were taken at Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta Colombia using a 25 L bucket. Samples were filtered with a standard zooplankton net (45 μm mesh) and fixed and preserved in 70% ethanol. Harpacticoid copepods were separated with a brush. Dissected specimens and appendages were mounted in glycerine. The dissected appendages were photographed using a Kodak Easy Share C140 digital camera adapted to a compound microscope at a magnification of 1000X. Main results: Cletocamptus sinaloensis seems to be closely related to C. levis Gómez 2005, known from Brazil. The closeness of these species was assumed based on the general shape and number of setae of the mandibular palp (one-segmented with three setae), P2-P4 EXP3 and ENP2 with 5-5-4 and 3-3-2 elements respectively, length: width ratio of the caudal rami, and ornamentation of the anal operculum with two rows of strong spinules. Nevertheless, they can be separated by 1) the armature complement of the antennal exopod, 2) length of the exopodal lobe of the female P5, 3) relative length of the P3ENP, 4) number of setae on the female P6. Conclusions: The specimen from Colombia bears the diagnostic features of C. sinaloensis as originally described, but shows subtle differences in the length of P1ENP, shape of seminal receptacle and relative length of P6

Analyzing Modern Biomolecules: The Revolution of Nucleic-Acid Sequencing-Review

    Get PDF
Recent developments have revolutionized the study of biomolecules. Among them are molecular markers, amplification and sequencing of nucleic acids. The latter is classified into three generations. The first allows to sequence small DNA fragments. The second one increases throughput, reducing turnaround and pricing, and is therefore more convenient to sequence full genomes and transcriptomes. The third generation is currently pushing technology to its limits, being able to sequence single molecules, without previous amplification, which was previously impossible. Besides, this represents a new revolution, allowing researchers to directly sequence RNA without previous retrotranscription. These technologies are having a significant impact on different areas, such as medicine, agronomy, ecology and biotechnology. Additionally, the study of biomolecules is revealing interesting evolutionary information. That includes deciphering what makes us human, including phenomena like non-coding RNA expansion. All this is redefining the concept of gene and transcript. Basic analyses and applications are now facilitated with new genome editing tools, such as CRISPR. All these developments, in general, and nucleic-acid sequencing, in particular, are opening a new exciting era of biomolecule analyses and applications, including personalized medicine, and diagnosis and prevention of diseases for humans and other animals
