The performance of Western Australian ports
The purpose of this report is to describe and assess the performance of Western Australia’s eight port authorities.2 The context for this research is a February 2006 report by Access Economics prepared for the Australian Council for Infrastructure Development (AusCID) (A Scorecard of the Design of Economic Regulation of Infrastructure, July 2006). This report aimed to rate “the extent to which the regime [for third party access] in each jurisdiction is designed in a way that is likely to foster good decisions and outcomes”; it explicitly did “not rate the decisions, or outcomes, of each jurisdiction’s regulatory regime or the industry that it regulates”
Galectin-9 Regulates Monosodium Urate Crystal-Induced Gouty Inflammation Through the Modulation of Treg/Th17 Ratio
Gout is caused by depositing monosodium urate (MSU) crystals within the articular area. The infiltration of neutrophils and monocytes drives the initial inflammatory response followed by lymphocytes. Interestingly, emerging evidence supports the view that in situ imbalance of T helper 17 cells (Th17)/regulatory T cells (Treg) impacts the subsequent damage to target tissues. Galectin-9 (Gal-9) is a modulator of innate and adaptive immunity with both pro- and anti-inflammatory functions, dependent upon its expression and cellular location. However, the specific cellular and molecular mechanisms by which Gal-9 modulates the inflammatory response in the onset and progression of gouty arthritis has yet to be elucidated. In this study, we sought to comprehensively characterise the functional role of exogenous Gal-9 in an in vivo model of MSU crystal-induced gouty inflammation by monitoring in situ neutrophils, monocytes and Th17/Treg recruited phenotypes and related cyto-chemokines profile. Treatment with Gal-9 revealed a dose-dependent reduction in joint inflammation scores, knee joint oedema and expression of different pro-inflammatory cyto-chemokines. Furthermore, flow cytometry analysis highlighted a significant modulation of infiltrating inflammatory monocytes (CD11b+/CD115+/LY6-Chi) and Th17 (CD4+/IL-17+)/Treg (CD4+/CD25+/FOXP-3+) cells following Gal-9 treatment. Collectively the results presented in this study indicate that the administration of Gal-9 could provide a new therapeutic strategy for preventing tissue damage in gouty arthritic inflammation and, possibly, in other inflammatory-based diseases
The Interactive Effect of Major Depression and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury On Current Suicide Risk and Lifetime Suicide Attempts
Objectives: This study examined the main and interactive effects of MDD and lifetime nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) on current suicide risk and past suicide attempts. We predicted that individuals with a history of NSSI and current MDD would be at greater suicide risk than those with either risk factor alone. An interaction between lifetime MDD and NSSI was hypothesized for past suicide attempts.
Methods: 204 substance dependent inpatients completed self-report measures and a diagnostic interview.
Results: Patients with both a history of NSSI and current MDD, relative to all other groups, had the greatest suicide risk. No support was found for the lifetime MDD by NSSI interaction.
Conclusion: Findings suggest the relevance of both NSSI and MDD in suicide risk
Iron abundances of B-type post-Asymptotic Giant Branch stars in globular clusters: Barnard 29 in M 13 and ROA 5701 in omega Cen
High resolution optical and ultraviolet spectra of two B-type post-Asymptotic
Giant Branch (post-AGB) stars in globular clusters, Barnard 29 in M 13 and ROA
5701 in omega Cen, have been analysed using model atmosphere techniques. The
optical spectra have been obtained with FEROS on the ESO 2.2-m telescope and
the 2d-Coud\'e spectrograph on the 2.7-m McDonald telescope, while the
ultraviolet observations are from the GHRS on the HST. Abundances of light
elements (C, N, O, Mg, Al and S) plus Fe have been determined from the optical
spectra, while the ultraviolet data provide additional Fe abundance estimates
from Fe III absorption lines in the 1875-1900 {\AA} wavelength region. A
general metal underabundance relative to young B-type stars is found for both
Barnard 29 and ROA 5701. These results are consistent with the metallicities of
the respective clusters, as well as with previous studies of the objects. The
derived abundance patterns suggest that the stars have not undergone a gas-dust
separation, contrary to previous suggestions, although they may have evolved
from the AGB before the onset of the third dredge-up. However, the Fe
abundances derived from the HST spectra are lower than those expected from the
metallicities of the respective clusters, by 0.5 dex for Barnard 29 and 0.8 dex
for ROA 5701. A similar systematic underabundance is also found for other
B-type stars in environments of known metallicity, such as the Magellanic
Clouds. These results indicate that the Fe III ultraviolet lines may yield
abundance values which are systematically too low by typically 0.6 dex and
hence such estimates should be treated with caution.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Global Analysis of Protein N-Myristoylation and Exploration of N-Myristoyltransferase as a Drug Target in the Neglected Human Pathogen Leishmania donovani
N-Myristoyltransferase (NMT) modulates protein function through the attachment of the lipid myristate to the N terminus of target proteins, and is a promising drug target in eukaryotic parasites such as Leishmania donovani. Only a small number of NMT substrates have been characterized in Leishmania, and a global picture of N-myristoylation is lacking. Here, we use metabolic tagging with an alkyne-functionalized myristic acid mimetic in live parasites followed by downstream click chemistry and analysis to identify lipidated proteins in both the promastigote (extracellular) and amastigote (intracellular) life stages. Quantitative chemical proteomics is used to profile target engagement by NMT inhibitors, and to define the complement of N-myristoylated proteins. Our results provide new insight into the multiple pathways modulated by NMT and the pleiotropic effects of NMT inhibition. This work constitutes the first global experimental analysis of protein lipidation in Leishmania, and reveals the extent of NMT-related biology yet to be explored for this neglected human pathogen

The two metallicity groups of the globular cluster M22: a chemical perspective
We present a detailed chemical composition analysis of 35 red giant stars in
the globular cluster M22. High resolution spectra for this study were obtained
at five observatories, and analyzed in a uniform manner. We have determined
abundances of representative light proton-capture, alpha, Fe-peak and
neutron-capture element groups. Our aim is to better understand the peculiar
chemical enrichment history of this cluster, in which two stellar groups are
characterized by a different content in iron, neutron capture elements Y, Zr
and Ba, and alpha element Ca. The principal results of this study are: (i)
substantial star-to-star metallicity scatter (-2.0<[Fe/H]<-1.6); (ii)
enhancement of s-process/r-process neutron-capture abundance ratios in a
fraction of giants, positively correlated with metallicity; (iii) sharp
separation between the s-process rich and s-process poor groups by [La/Eu]
ratio; (iv) possible increase of [Cu/Fe] ratios with increasing [Fe/H],
suggesting that this element also has a significant s-process component; and
(v) presence of Na-O and C-N anticorrelations in both the stellar groups.Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures. Accepted for publication in A&
The First HET Planet: A Companion to HD 37605
We report the first detection of a planetary-mass companion to a star using
the High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). The
HET-HRS now gives routine radial velocity precision of 2-3 m/s for high SNR
observations of quiescent stars. The planetary-mass companion to the metal-rich
K0V star HD37605 has an orbital period of 54.23 days, an orbital eccentricity
of 0.737, and a minimum mass of 2.84 Jupiter masses. The queue-scheduled
operation of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope enabled us to discovery of this
relatively short-period planet with a total observation time span of just two
orbital periods. The ability of queue-scheduled large-aperture telescopes to
respond quickly to interesting and important results demonstrates the power of
this new approach in searching for extra-solar planets as well as in other ares
