Existence and Uniqueness for the Multivariate Discrete Terminal Wealth Relative

In this paper the multivariate fractional trading ansatz of money management from Ralph Vince (Portfolio Management Formulas: Mathematical Trading Methods for the Futures, Options, and Stock Markets, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1990) is discussed. In particular, we prove existence and uniqueness of an optimal f of the respective optimization problem under reasonable assumptions on the trade return matrix. This result generalizes a similar result for the univariate fractional trading ansatz. Furthermore, our result guarantees that the multivariate optimal f solutions can always be found numerically by steepest ascent methods

Empirical Study of the 1-2-3 Trend Indicator

In this paper we study automatically recognized trends and investigate their statistics. To do that we introduce the notion of a wavelength for time series via cross correlation and use this wavelength to calibrate the 1-2-3 trend indicator of Maier-Paape [Automatic One Two Three, Quantitative Finance, 2013] to automatically find trends. Extensive statistics are reported for EUR-USD, DAX-Future, Gold and Crude Oil regarding e.g. the dynamic, duration and extension of trends on different time scales.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables; Keywords: market technical trends, automatic trend analysis, wavelength of time series, autocorrelatio

When Transformer models are more compositional than humans: The case of the depth charge illusion

    Get PDF
State-of-the-art Transformer-based language models like GPT-3 are very good at generating syntactically well-formed and semantically plausible text. However, it is unclear to what extent these models encode the compositional rules of human language and to what extent their impressive performance is due to the use of relatively shallow heuristics, which have also been argued to be a factor in human language processing. One example is the so-called depth charge illusion, which occurs when a semantically complex, incongruous sentence like No head injury is too trivial to be ignored is assigned a plausible but not compositionally licensed meaning (Don't ignore head injuries, even if they appear to be trivial). I present an experiment that investigated how depth charge sentences are processed by Transformer models, which are free of many human performance bottlenecks. The results are mixed: Transformers do show evidence of non-compositionality in depth charge contexts, but also appear to be more compositional than humans in some respects

Five degrees of (non)sense: Investigating the connection between bullshit receptivity and susceptibility to semantic illusions

    Get PDF
Individual differences in people’s tendency to see bullshit statements such as Perceptual reality transcends subtle truth as meaningful and possibly profound have become an active topic of research in judgment and decision making in recent years. However, (psycho)linguistics has so far paid little attention to the topic, despite its obvious appeal for language processing research. I present an experiment that investigated possible shared traits contributing to individual bullshit receptivity and susceptibility to semantic illusions, which occur when compositionally incongruous sentences receive plausible but unlicensed interpretations (e.g., More people have been to Russia than I have). The results show relatively little indication of an individual-level tendency to both fall for bullshit and for linguistic illusions. Implications for future psycholinguistic research into bullshit processing are discussed

The Hidden Influence of Cognitive Processing Style on Consumers’ Intention to Adopt Innovative Products

It is a central aim of Product Innovation Management to find the factors that influence consumers’ decision to adopt innovations. In this quantitative, empirical thesis, I illuminate a new, irrational side of consumers’ intention to adopt product innovations by drawing on Novelty Categorization Theory. I analyse the research question: Does the situational, dichotomous and cognitive factor processing style (global vs. local processing) (i) affect consumers’ intention to adopt innovations and does the effect (ii) vary depending on different levels of consumers’ personal predisposition to resist innovations? I recruit participants from the crowdsourcing platform Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) and test the effects by means of multivariate, linear regression analysis. With this thesis I contribute to theory by altering the Innovation Decision Model and contribute to practice by uncovering a factor that can be utilized for the invention of new marketing instruments. Keywords: Product innovation management; innovation resistance; local and global processing; consumer behavior; innovation decision model. It is a central aim of Product Innovation Management to find the factors that influence consumers’ decision to adopt innovations. Improving Math Placement of Non-Traditional Students in Arkansas Community Colleges Using Multiple Measures Assessments

For decades, community colleges have relied on standardized placement tests to determine student readiness for college-level coursework. COVID-19 exposed the flaws of relying on a single measure to assess student readiness as many test sites shut down during the pandemic. Previous research has also pointed out the high rate of misplacement when using placement tests as a single factor. This is particularly important for non-traditional students as they often lack the guidance needed to successfully navigate and prepare for such tests. The result of this situation is often that non-traditional students are placed into remedial courses despite having the potential to do well in college-level coursework. With research showing extended time in college often leads to attrition coupled with other research showing math as a gatekeeper course to completion, examining more accurate measures is critical. Because of this, many community colleges have started exploring alternative ways to place students into college-level coursework using more holistic factors. A popular and effective method of placement in recent years has been multiple measures assessments (MMA). These assessments allow for the use of multiple factors to create a more accurate placement picture for students. The purpose of the study was to explore these multiple measures assessments, determine variables of interest, and test whether MMAs are suitable alternatives to placement exams. The results of the study revealed that the MMA model created was more effective overall in determining student readiness for College Algebra for Arkansas community college students

Genome-wide mapping reveals single-origin chromosome replication in Leishmania, a eukaryotic microbe

Background DNA replication initiates on defined genome sites, termed origins. Origin usage appears to follow common rules in the eukaryotic organisms examined to date: all chromosomes are replicated from multiple origins, which display variations in firing efficiency and are selected from a larger pool of potential origins. To ask if these features of DNA replication are true of all eukaryotes, we describe genome-wide origin mapping in the parasite Leishmania. Results Origin mapping in Leishmania suggests a striking divergence in origin usage relative to characterized eukaryotes, since each chromosome appears to be replicated from a single origin. By comparing two species of Leishmania, we find evidence that such origin singularity is maintained in the face of chromosome fusion or fission events during evolution. Mapping Leishmania origins suggests that all origins fire with equal efficiency, and that the genomic sites occupied by origins differ from related non-origins sites. Finally, we provide evidence that origin location in Leishmania displays striking conservation with Trypanosoma brucei, despite the latter parasite replicating its chromosomes from multiple, variable strength origins. Conclusions The demonstration of chromosome replication for a single origin in Leishmania, a microbial eukaryote, has implications for the evolution of origin multiplicity and associated controls, and may explain the pervasive aneuploidy that characterizes Leishmania chromosome architecture
