Small Angular Scale Simulations of the Microwave Sky

    Get PDF
We describe and compare two types of microwave sky simulations which are good for small angular scales. The first type uses expansions in spherical harmonics, and the second one is based on plane waves and the Fast Fourier Transform. The angular power spectrum is extracted from maps corresponding to both types of simulations, and the resulting spectra are appropriately compared. In this way, the features and usefulness of Fourier simulations are pointed out. For 100\ell \geq 100, all the simulations lead to similar accuracies; however, the CPU cost of Fourier simulations is 10\sim 10 times smaller than that for spherical harmonic simulations. For 100\ell \leq 100, the simulations based on spherical harmonics seem to be preferable.Comment: 16 pages (LATEX), 2 postcript figures. Accepted in Ap

In this paper I study the manuscript of the play entitled 'Un castigo en tres venganzas', by Diego Martínez de Mora. Copyist, bookseller, 'memorión' and maybe even an actor, the existing texts transcribed by him show the profile of a remarkable person that is hard to be pigeonholed in the network that shape the complex transmission process of our Golden Age theater. I’ll analyze the three different stages in which his intervention in Calderon’s text can be organized from the simple precise correction to the moment when he gave free rein to his creative desires as it can be proved in the number of verses (even a whole new scene) that he decided to include and are totally unknown in the rest of the printed versions of the text

Avant la lettre: Philip Perry, Reconversionist Aesthetics, and the Medieval Literary

Producción Científica“Medievalism,” in the words of Tom Shippey, is “the study of responses to the Middle Ages at all periods since a sense of the mediaeval began to develop.”1 Although a relatively recent area of study, it nevertheless has long roots, and over time many practitioners, some better known than others. Philip Mark Perry (d. 1774), the subject of this essay, came early to the field, only to leave it before his efforts could see print. Nevertheless, his exploration of medieval writings and writers deserves greater recognition. Here we hope to establish that Perry's largely unedited manuscripts, now in Spain and Scotland, offer evidence of an exceptional contribution to the early narrative of medievalism.Financiado por la Agencia Estatal de Investigación, proyecto I+D "Misiones y transmisiones: intercambios entre la Península Ibérica y las Islas Británicas en la época Moderna Extensa" Ref: PID2020-113516GB-I0

A Complexity Architecture for Information Technologies: a Three-Year Didactic Experiment

    Get PDF
One medium-term strategy for helping in the management of complexity is the introduction of a conceptual complexity component in the very centre of university curricula. In very few areas is the growth of complexity as evident as in the information technologies (ITs), the focus of the work presented in the current paper. We have therefore developed an integrated way of tackling the specific field of information technologies by means of an approach,to complexity. The content of this paper describes the guidelines of our research effort, placing an emphasis on informatics. Concepts of complexity based on the system metaphor have been substantially drawn upon in this exercise and are thus presented in some detail. Also described is a didactic experiment conducted by the author and designed to provide a new and integrating approach to University curricula for future professionals. The students' "discovery" of complexity is the focal point of the experiment. The findings of this effort are encouraging and call for the continuation and expansion of this experiment

Palynological age constraint of Les Vilelles unit, Catalan Coastal Chain, Spain

Les Vilelles unit is a detrital sequence exposed at the southwestern margin of the Catalan Coastal Chain (CCC), NE Spain, below the Carboniferous turbiditic series. Based on the palynological content, the age of this unit was initially assigned to the Middle-Late Devonian (Eifelian to Famennian). Additional radiolarian and conodont findings were considered to be Early–Middle Mississippian (Tournaisian to early Visean). To clarify this age discrepancy a new and more comprehensive palynostratigraphic analysis has been conducted in the upper part of the section representative of Les Vilelles unit. This has provided an assemblage of miospores, acritarchs, prasinophyta phycomata and chitinozoans that can be confidently assigned to a latest Frasnian interval, in contact with the Frasnian–Famennian boundary. Therefore, the present analysis refines the Middle–Late Devonian age formerly assigned, establishes a latest Frasnian age for the top of the unit, and provides new insights to the better understanding of the unconformity and hiatus separating the pre-Carboniferous and Carboniferous CCC series in the Priorat Massif. The study also includes a systematic section with the description of three newly established miospore species: Dibolisporites coniugatum, Dibolisporites prioratum and Rugospora spinosa
