Observation of noise correlated by the Hawking effect in a water tank
We measured the power spectrum and two-point correlation function for the
randomly fluctuating free surface on the downstream side of a stationary flow
with a maximum Froude number reached above a
localised obstacle. On such a flow the scattering of incident long wavelength
modes is analogous to that responsible for black hole radiation (the Hawking
effect). Our measurements of the noise show a clear correlation between pairs
of modes of opposite energies. We also measure the scattering coefficients by
applying the same analysis of correlations to waves produced by a wave maker.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures. several points clarified; two new subsections

Effects of interdot dipole coupling in mesoscopic epitaxial Fe(100) dot arrays
The domain structure and the coercivity of epitaxial Fe(100) circular dot arrays of different diameters and separations have been studied using magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and focused magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). The MFM images of the 1 µm diameter single domain dot arrays show direct evidence of strong interdot dipole coupling when the separation is reduced down to 0.1 µm. The coercivity of the dots is also found to be dependent on the separation, indicating the effect of the interdot dipole coupling on the magnetization reversal process
Identity crisis in pulmonary arterial hypertension
International audiencePulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) shares many hallmarks with cancer. Cancer cells acquire their hallmarks by a pathological Darwinian evolution process built on the so-called cancer cell ''identity crisis.'' Here we demonstrate that PAH shares the most striking features of the cancer identity crisis: the ectopic expression of normally silent tissue-specific genes

The Basics of Water Waves Theory for Analogue Gravity
This chapter gives an introduction to the connection between the physics of
water waves and analogue gravity. Only a basic knowledge of fluid mechanics is
assumed as a prerequisite.Comment: 36 pages. Lecture Notes for the IX SIGRAV School on "Analogue

Magnetic properties of submicron Co islands and their use as artificial pinning centers
We report on the magnetic properties of elongated submicron magnetic islands
and their influence on a superconducting film. The magnetic properties were
studied by magnetization hysteresis loop measurements and scanning-force
microscopy. In the as-grown state, the islands have a magnetic structure
consisting of two antiparallel domains. This stable domain configuration has
been directly visualized as a 2x2-checkerboard pattern by magnetic-force
microscopy. In the remanent state, after magnetic saturation along the easy
axis, all islands have a single-domain structure with the magnetic moment
oriented along the magnetizing field direction. Periodic lattices of these Co
islands act as efficient artificial pinning arrays for the flux lines in a
superconducting Pb film deposited on top of the Co islands. The influence of
the magnetic state of the dots on their pinning efficiency is investigated in
these films, before and after the Co dots are magnetized.Comment: 6 pages including figure
Effects of self-generated electric and magnetic fields in laser-generated fast electron propagation in solid materials: Electric inhibition and beam pinching
We present some experimental results which demonstrate
the presence of electric inhibition in the propagation
of relativistic electrons generated by intense laser pulses,
depending on target conductivity. The use of transparent
targets and shadowgraphic techniques has made it possible
to evidence electron jets moving at the speed of light,
an indication of the presence of self-generated strong
magnetic fields
