    Development of a calibration satellite for a CMB telescope flying in formation about L2 libration point

    Trabajo presentado a la 8th European Conference for aeronautics and aerospace sciences (EUCASS), celebrada en Madrid (España) del 1 al 4 de julio de 2019.The new generation of cosmic microwave background (CMB) telescopes have reached unprecedented levels of sensitivity. These telescopes measure several cosmological parameters with different levels of accuracy. In particular, considerable effort has been made to measure the B-mode polarization, which is related to the inflationary process of the universe. The power spectrum of this signal is about four orders of magnitude fainter than the CMB temperature power spectrum. Due to the signal weakness, the instruments must be subjected to calibration processes before and after launching. Additionally, data from the same sky area is gathered repeatedly to mitigate during data analysis the systematic errors induced by instruments. Celestial sources are often used as an external reference for calibration after launch, but these sources are not perfectly characterized. In this paper we study the concept of using a calibration satellite (CalSat) flying in formation with a CMB telescope in an orbit located at the second Lagrange point (L2). The CalSat is conceived as a micro satellite (10-100 kg) and serves as a perfectly known source of a reference signal to reduce the polarization angle measurement uncertainty. According to the scanning law followed by the telescope, the influence of the relative position between the spacecrafts in the calibration process is studied. The relative motion of the spacecrafts is considered with a simplified dynamic model. Based on the mission requirements, the different subsystems are sized and a preliminary design to evaluate the feasibility is obtained. The design has been carried out under the principle of reducing at minimum the impact on the telescope architecture. It would require to be launched along with the telescope to reach L2 at the same time and being able to communicate with the telescope.     Violent criminal behavior in the context of bipolar disorder: Systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Despite the potential importance of understanding violent criminal behavior (VCB) in individuals suffering from bipolar disorder (BD), previous findings are conflicting. The aims of the present study are to clarify the association of VCB and BD in comparison to general population and other psychiatric conditions. METHODS: A systematic review of literature from January 1st, 1980 through January 16th, 2017 from 3 electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE and PsycInfo), following the PRISMA and the MOOSE statements. Original peer-reviewed studies reporting data on VCB in BD were included. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed. Potential sources of heterogeneity were examined through subgroup and meta-regression analyses. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO, CRD42017054070. RESULTS: Twelve studies providing data from 58,475 BD participants. The prevalence of VCB in BD was 7.1% (95%CI = 3.0‒16.5%; k = 4). The association of BD and VCB compared to general population was not significant (OR = 2.784; 95% CI, 0.687‒11.287, P = .152). The association was significant only in cross-sectional studies, in studies in which VCB was assessed through self-reported measures, and in studies conducted in the USA. BD was more likely to be associated with VCB when BD patients were compared to controls with depressive disorders, whilst it was found to be less associated with VCB when BD was compared to psychotic disorders. LIMITATIONS: 1. the methodological heterogeneity across the included studies. 2. causal inferences were precluded by the inclusion of cross-sectional studies. CONCLUSIONS: These findings might provide a more balance portrait of the association between BD and VCB to clinicians, law enforcement and general public

    Behavioral addictions in bipolar disorders: A systematic review

    Clinical and epidemiological research suggests that behavioral addictions (BA) are associated with a wide range of psychiatric disorders. However, the relationship between BA and bipolar disorders (BD) has not been thoroughly explored. The aim of this systematic review was to critically summarize and evaluate the current available evidence regarding a possible association between BA and BD. A systematic review of major electronic databases according to PRISMA guidelines was conducted from inception to 31st December 2017. We sought quantitative studies data concerning prevalence of comorbidity, features and treatment related to BA-BD comorbidity. Data were narratively synthesized. Of the 1250 studies returned from the search, a total of 28 articles were included in this review. BA may be overrepresented in BD samples, and the other way around. Pathological gambling and kleptomania were the most prevalent conditions followed by compulsive buying, compulsive sexual behavior and internet addiction. BA was also associated with other mood disorders, anxiety disorders and substance use disorder. BD-BA comorbidity was related with more severe course of illness. Studies on treatment strategies for BD-BA comorbidity are rather limited; only one randomized controlled trial that fulfilled inclusion criteria was identified. Methodological heterogeneity in terms of design and results among studies was found. BD-BA commonly co-occurs although there is a need for rigorous studies. Routine screening and adequate assessment may be helpful in BD patients to identify individuals at risk for BA and to effectively manage the complex consequences associated with BA-BD comorbidity

    Identifying social cognition subgroups in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder: a cluster analytical approach

    Background: Bipolar Disorder (BD) is associated with social cognition (SC) impairments even during remission periods although a large heterogeneity has been described. Our aim was to explore the existence of different profiles on SC in patients with BD, and further explore the potential impact of distinct variables on SC. Methods: Hierarchical cluster analysis was conducted using three SC domains (Theory of Mind (ToM), Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Attributional Bias (AB)). The sample comprised of 131 individuals, 71 patients with BD and 60 healthy control subjects who were compared in terms of SC performance, demographic, clinical and neurocognitive variables. A logistic regression model was used to estimate the effect of SC associated risk factors. Results: A two-cluster solution was identified with an adjusted performance group (N=48, 67.6%) and a low performance group (N=23, 32.4%) with mild deficits in ToM and AB domains and with moderate difficulties in EI. Patients with low SC performance were mostly males, showed lower estimated IQ, higher subthreshold depressive symptoms, longer illness duration, and poorer visual memory and attention. Low estimated IQ (OR=0.920; 95%CI=0.863-0.981), male gender (OR=5.661; 95%CI=1.473–21.762) and longer illness duration (OR=1.085; 95%CI=1.006–1.171) contributed the most to the patients clustering. The model explained up to 35% of the variance in SC performance. Conclusions: Our results confirmed the existence of two discrete profiles of SC among BD. Nearly two thirds of patients exhibited adjusted social cognitive abilities. Longer illness duration, male gender and lower estimated IQ were associated with low SC performance.

    Staging Bipolar Disorder.

    The purpose of this study was to analyze the evidence supporting a staging model for bipolar disorder. The authors conducted an extensive Medline and Pubmed search of the published literature using a variety of search terms (staging, bipolar disorder, early intervention) to find relevant articles, which were reviewed in detail. Only recently specific proposals have been made to apply clinical staging to bipolar disorder. The staging model in bipolar disorder suggests a progression from prodromal (at-risk) to more severe and refractory presentations (Stage IV). A staging model implies a longitudinal appraisal of different aspects: clinical variables, such as number of episodes and subsyndromal symptoms, functional and cognitive impairment, comorbidity, biomarkers, and neuroanatomical changes. Staging models are based on the fact that response to treatment is generally better when it is introduced early in the course of the illness. It assumes that earlier stages have better prognosis and require simpler therapeutic regimens. Staging may assist in bipolar disorder treatment planning and prognosis, and emphasize the importance of early intervention. Further research is required in this exciting and novel area

    QUIJOTE scientific results - VIII. Diffuse polarized foregrounds from component separation with QUIJOTE-MFI

    We derive linearly polarized astrophysical component maps in the Northern Sky from the QUIJOTE-MFI data at 11 and 13?GHz in combination with the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe K and Ka bands (23 and 33?GHz) and all Planck polarized channels (30-353-GHz), using the parametric component separation method B-SeCRET. The addition of QUIJOTE-MFI data significantly improves the parameter estimation of the low-frequency foregrounds, especially the estimation of the synchrotron spectral index, [beta]s. We present the first detailed ?s map of the Northern Celestial Hemisphere at a smoothing scale of 2°. We find statistically significant spatial variability across the sky. We obtain an average value of ?3.08 and a dispersion of 0.13, considering only pixels with reliable goodness of fit. The power-law model of the synchrotron emission provides a good fit to the data outside the Galactic plane but fails to track the complexity within this region. Moreover, when we assume a synchrotron model with uniform curvature, cs, we find a value of cs = ?0.0797 ± 0.0012. However, there is insufficient statistical significance to determine which model is favoured, either the power law or the power law with uniform curvature. Furthermore, we estimate the thermal dust spectral parameters in polarization. Our cosmic microwave background, synchrotron, and thermal dust maps are highly correlated with the corresponding products of the PR4 Planck release, although some large-scale differences are observed in the synchrotron emission. Finally, we find that the ?s estimation in the high signal-to-noise synchrotron emission areas is prior-independent, while, outside these regions, the prior governs the [beta]s estimation.We thank the staff of the Teide Observatory for invaluable assistance in the commissioning and operation of QUIJOTE.     Prodromal phase: Differences in prodromal symptoms, risk factors and markers of vulnerability in first episode mania versus first episode psychosis with onset in late adolescence or adulthood

    Objective: This study was aimed at identifying differences in the prodromal symptoms and their duration, risk factors and markers of vulnerability in patients presenting a first episode mania (FEM) or psychosis (FEP) with onset in late adolescence or adulthood in order to guide tailored treatment strategies. Methods: Patients with a FEM or FEP underwent a clinical assessment. Prodromes were evaluated with the Bipolar Prodrome Symptom Scale-Retrospective (BPSS-R). Chi-squared tests were conducted to assess specific prodromal symptoms, risk factors or markers of vulnerability between groups. Significant prodromal symptoms were entered in a stepwise forward logistic regression model. The probabilities of a gradual versus rapid onset pattern of the prodromes were computed with logistic regression models. Results: The total sample included 108 patients (FEM = 72, FEP = 36). Social isolation was associated with the prodromal stage of a FEP whilst Increased energy or goal-directed activity with the prodrome to a FEM. Physically slowed down presented the most gradual onset whilst Increased energy presented the most rapid. The presence of obstetric complications and difficulties in writing and reading during childhood were risk factors for FEP. As for markers of vulnerability, impairment in premorbid adjustment was characteristic of FEP patients. No specific risk factor or marker of vulnerability was identified for FEM. Conclusion: Early characteristics differentiating FEP from FEM were identified. These findings might help shape early identification and preventive intervention programmes
