Effect of an isoflavones-containing red clover preparation and alkaline supplementation on bone metabolism in ovariectomized rats
The aim of this study was to test the combined effect of a quality-controlled red clover extract (RCE) standardized to contain 40% isoflavones by weight (genistein, daidzein, biochanin A, and formononetin present as hydrolyzed aglycones) together with a modified alkaline supplementation on bone metabolic and biomechanical parameters in an experimental model of surgically-induced menopause. Sprague–Dawley female rats were maintained under controlled standard conditions of light and fed with conventional food of standard calcium content and no alfalfa or soybean components. Rats were randomized into four groups: Group A represented normal rats (sham operated) while three other groups were ovariectomized (OVX) and fed for three months as follows: standard food (group B), 6 mg/kg/day food mixed with RCE (Group C), or given 6 mg/kg/day of RCE plus a modified alkaline supplementation (BP) through a nasogastric tube at a dose of 16 mg (group D). The animals were killed 90 days after surgery. As compared to group B, RCE or RCE + BP treatments brought about significantly higher level of estradiol and mitigated the weight loss of the uterus and improved maximum load of the femoral neck. Osteocalcin level showed an over 65% increase in group B but both RCE and RCE + BP treatments prevented such abnormality with a significantly better result in RCE + BP group which virtually normalized such parameter as well as urinary excretion of DPD. Group C and D reduced the over 20% loss of bone mineral density and bone mineral content/body weight ratio observed in untreated post-ovariectomy group. Untreated ovariectomy caused about 48% decrease of cancellous bone mass in the femoral neck while this abnormality was prevented at similar extent by both RCE and RCE + BP treatments. Ovariectomy determined an over 80% increase of bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP) level but both RCE and RCE + BP treatments significantly mitigated such variable. The BALP decrease yielded by the combined RCE + BP treatment was statistically lower than RCE alone. Taken together these data show that red clover preparation in dosages amenable to clinical practice do improve OVX-induced osteoporosis while a mild metabolic alkalosis might further synergize some therapeutic aspects
Recent Searches for the Radio Lines of NH_3 in Comets
Radio observations in the ammonia inversion lines of four comets, C/2001 A2
(LINEAR), 153P/Ikeya-Zhang, C/2001 Q4 (NEAT) and C/2002 T7 (LINEAR), were
performed at the Effelsberg 100-m Radio Telescope during their respective close
approaches to Earth. None of the four lowest energy metastable lines
(J,K=J),J=1--4, could be detected in these comets. We derive the following 3
sigma upper bounds on the NH_3 production rate, and c omparing to the
corresponding water production rates, percentage NH_3 abundances relative to
H_2O:
Q(NH_3) < 1.9x10^26 s^-1 (0.63%) for C/2001 A2 (LINEAR),
Q(NH_3) < 2.7x10^26 s^-1 (0.13%) for C/2001 Q4 (NEAT),
Q(NH_3) < 2.3x10^27 s^-1 (0.74%) for C/2002 T7 (LINEAR) and Q(NH_3) <=
6.3x10^26 s^-1 (0.63%) for Comet 153P/Ikeya-Zhang.
At 0.74% or less, the ammonia-to-water ratios are factors of 2 below the
value for C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) and 1P/Halley, suggesting chemical diversity
between comets. The 18-cm lines of OH were clearly detected in the two comets
observed during the 2004 campaign, thereby validating the cometary ephemerides.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Applying case based reasoning for prioritizing areas of business management
Determining the importance of different management areas in a company provides guidance about the
needs of increasing the analysis and actions focuses in particular topic. To do it, it is necessary to decompose
the management in a coherent set of specific management areas and provide a way that allows the
company to determine the importance of these areas for them. This paper presents a novel system that
guides companies to obtain a classification of important management areas for them. It is focused on the
use of a case based reasoning system because the variability and the evolution of companies as time
passes requires using techniques with learning capabilities. The proposed system provides an automatic
self-assessment system that provides companies an ordered list of their most important management
areas. This system was implemented a year ago for the evaluation of Spanish companies. Currently, it
is in production providing relevant information about the management areas of these companies
Histidine-rich Glycoprotein Could Be an Early Predictor of Vasospasm after Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
Cerebral vasospasm (CVS) is a major contributor to the high morbidity and mortality of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) patients. We measured histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG), a new biomarker of aSAH, in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to investigate whether HRG might be an early predictor of CVS. A total of seven controls and 14 aSAH patients (8 males, 6 females aged 53.4±15.4 years) were enrolled, and serial CSF and serum samples were taken. We allocated these samples to three phases (T1-T3) and measured HRG, interleukin (IL)-6, fibrinopeptide A (FpA), and 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine (8OHdG) in the CSF, and the HRG in serum. We also examined the release of HRG in rat blood incubated in artificial CSF. In contrast to the other biomarkers examined, the change in the CSF HRG concentration was significantly different between the nonspasm and spasm groups (p<0.01). The rat blood/CSF model revealed a time course similar to that of the human CSF samples in the non-spasm group. HRG thus appears to have the potential to become an early predictor of CVS. In addition, the interaction of HRG with IL-6, FpA, and 8OHdG may form the pathology of CVS
Chandra Observations of Type Ia Supernovae: Upper Limits to the X-ray Flux of SN 2002bo, SN 2002ic, SN 2005gj, and SN 2005ke
We set sensitive upper limits to the X-ray emission of four Type Ia
supernovae (SNe Ia) using the Chandra X-ray Observatory. SN 2002bo, a normal,
although reddened, nearby SN Ia, was observed 9.3 days after explosion. For an
absorbed, high temperature bremsstrahlung model the flux limits are 3.2E-16
ergs/cm^2/s (0.5-2 keV band) and 4.1E-15 ergs/cm^2/s (2-10 keV band). Using
conservative model assumptions and a 10 km/s wind speed, we derive a mass loss
rate of \dot{M} ~ 2E-5 M_\odot/yr, which is comparable to limits set by the
non-detection of Halpha lines from other SNe Ia. Two other objects, SN 2002ic
and SN 2005gj, observed 260 and 80 days after explosion, respectively, are the
only SNe Ia showing evidence for circumstellar interaction. The SN 2002ic X-ray
flux upper limits are ~4 times below predictions of the interaction model
currently favored to explain the bright optical emission. To resolve this
discrepancy we invoke the mixing of cool dense ejecta fragments into the
forward shock region, which produces increased X-ray absorption. A modest
amount of mixing allows us to accommodate the Chandra upper limit. SN 2005gj is
less well studied at this time. Assuming the same circumstellar environment as
for SN 2002i, the X-ray flux upper limits for SN 2005gj are ~4 times below the
predictions, suggesting that mixing of cool ejecta into the forward shock has
also occurred here. Our reanalysis of Swift and Chandra data on SN 2005ke does
not confirm a previously reported X-ray detection. The host galaxies NGC 3190
(SN 2002bo) and NGC 1371 (SN 2005ke) each harbor a low luminosity (L_X ~ 3-4E40
ergs/s) active nucleus in addition to wide-spread diffuse soft X-ray emission.Comment: 16 pages, to appear in ApJ (20 Nov 2007
Probiotics in Diverticular Disease of the Colon: an Open Label Study
Aim: To investigate the effectiveness and safety of a symbiotic mixture in preventing recurrence of constipation-related abdominal pain in patients with uncomplicated diverticular disease of the colon.
Methods: Forty-six consecutive patients (10 men, 36 women, mean age 62.5 years, range 49 to 77 years), previously affected by symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease of the colon, were enrolled in a 6-month follow-up study in a prospective, randomized, open-label study. The following symptoms were assessed at entry and through follow-up by using a quantitative scale: constipation, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. After recruitment, the patients were assigned to the following treatment: SCM-III symbiotic mixture, 10ml three times a day. The colonization of ingested Lactobacillus acidophilus 145 and Bifidobacterium spp. 420 was assessed by specie-specific PCR. Forty-five patients completed the study (97%).
Results: Thirty-one patients (68%) were still symptom free after the 6th month of treatment. Treatment with SCM-III was regarded as "effective" or "very effective" in more than 78% of the patients altogether (p<0.01 vs baseline values). The microbiological study showed that, as compared to baseline values, SCM-III enabled a significant increase of the lactobacilli and bifidobacteria counting and a trend decrease of clostridia. Genomic analysis confirmed the survivability of the ingested strain as long as treatment was given.
Conclusions: The present symbiotic mixture seems to be effective in preventing recurrence of symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease of the colon, especially in those patients with constipation-predominant features
Ionic Conductivities of Molten CuI and AgI-CuI Mixtures
Ionic conductivities σ for molten CuI and AgI-CuI mixtures were measured in the temperature ranges of approximately 580-800 and 500-850 °C, respectively. The value of σ for molten CuI in the range is smaller than that for molten CuBr and CuCl. σ for molten AgI-CuI mixtures decreases with increasing CuI-concentration. The activation energies Ea for molten AgI-CuI system were determined from the analysis of temperature dependence of σ by using the by Arrhenius type equation. Ea for molten AgI-CuI gradually increase with increasing CuIconcentration
Differences in rate and medical indication of caesarean section between Germany and Japan
Background:
There are growing concerns about the increasing rate of caesarean section (CS) worldwide. Various strategies have been implemented to reduce the proportion of CS to a reasonable level. Most research on medical indications for CS focuses on nationwide evaluations. Comparative research between different countries is sparse. The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in the rate and indications for CS between Japan and Germany in 2012 and 2013.
Methods:
Comparison of the overall rate and medical indications for CS in two cohort studies from Germany and Japan. We used data from the German Perinatal Survey and the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS).
Results:
We analyzed data of 1 335 150 participants from the German perinatal survey and of 62 533 participants from JECS and found significant differences between the two countries in CS rate (30.6% vs 20.6%) and main medical indications: cephalopelvic disproportion (3.2% vs 1.3%; OR: 2.4 [95% CI: 2.2–2.6]), fetal distress (7.3% vs 2.3%; OR: 3.4 [95%-CI: 3.2–3.6]), and past uterine surgery/repeat CS (8.4% vs 8.8%; OR: 0.9 [95%-CI: 0.9–1]).
Conclusion:
There are differences in the rate and medical indications for CS between Germany and Japan at the population level. Fetal distress was identified as a medical indication for CS more often Germany than in Japan. Considering the substantial diagnostic uncertainty of electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) as the major indicator for fetal distress, it would seem to be reasonable to rethink CS decision algorithms
The composition of the protosolar disk and the formation conditions for comets
Conditions in the protosolar nebula have left their mark in the composition
of cometary volatiles, thought to be some of the most pristine material in the
solar system. Cometary compositions represent the end point of processing that
began in the parent molecular cloud core and continued through the collapse of
that core to form the protosun and the solar nebula, and finally during the
evolution of the solar nebula itself as the cometary bodies were accreting.
Disentangling the effects of the various epochs on the final composition of a
comet is complicated. But comets are not the only source of information about
the solar nebula. Protostellar disks around young stars similar to the protosun
provide a way of investigating the evolution of disks similar to the solar
nebula while they are in the process of evolving to form their own solar
systems. In this way we can learn about the physical and chemical conditions
under which comets formed, and about the types of dynamical processing that
shaped the solar system we see today.
This paper summarizes some recent contributions to our understanding of both
cometary volatiles and the composition, structure and evolution of protostellar
disks.Comment: To appear in Space Science Reviews. The final publication is
