Academic Entrepreneurship – Gendered Discourses and Ghettos

In this article, based on texts on academic entrepreneurship as well as on interviews with teachers and researchers at two Swedish universities, we explore how global and local discourses of academic entrepreneurship are constructed and gendered. How can gender mainstreaming interventions be introduced in the arena academic entrepreneurship? We show that the entrepreneurial discourse is met by both counteracting and contributory discourses in academia. We also show that texts promoting entrepreneurship pictures of men address both women and men, while pictures of women are only targeted to women, often found in ‘entrepreneurial ghettos’ and conceptualized as in need of support, as less risk-willing and less willing to commercialize their research. A problem addressed in this article is how to design gender mainstreaming interventions without reproducing such stereotypes. We believe the solution is not gender neutrality, but to move back and forth between liberal feminist and more critical constructionist approaches. .In this article, based on texts on academic entrepreneurship as well as on interviews with teachers and researchers at two Swedish universities, we explore how global and local discourses of academic entrepreneurship are constructed and gendered. Reducing burnout and anxiety among doctors: randomized controlled trial

Prevalence studies show high levels of burnout, anxiety, fatigue and other symptoms of distress among medical doctors. However, there are very few randomized controlled trials testing interventions against these problems. This randomized controlled trial (NCT02838290; ClinicalTrials.gov, 2016) tested interventions teaching 227 doctors about the psychology of burnout, stress, coping with patient death, and managing distress, as well as giving them information about prevalence rates among doctors. Primary outcomes included burnout, anxiety, insomnia, grief, alcohol/drug use, binge eating, physical symptoms, and psychiatric morbidity. The outcomes were tested before and after the interventions with a 7-day time-lag. The intervention significantly decreased doctors’ levels of burnout (e.g. emotional exhaustion and depersonalization) and anxiety. Doctors in the control group had no significant changes in these signs of distress. The intervention did not significantly reduce other health and habit-related outcomes potentially because these need a longer time-lag than 7 days. Interventions teaching doctors about the psychology of work-related distress reduce burnout and anxiety by helping doctors realize that distress is a normal, human reaction to external stressors, common in medicine, and solvable by learning about psychological coping strategies. Key words: Binge-eating; insomnia; intervention; physical symptoms; stress

Work, cooperation and professionalization : a multiple case study

This dissertation, originally aimed at investigating cooperation in heterogeneous as well as homogeneous groups, is based on a multiple case study presented in six separate, but partly related papers. These papers, preceded by Part 1 with an introduction and Part II, dealing with the method used, are divided into three different parts. Part III a case study of the introduction of self-regulating work groups at a paper mill and in an office, both homogeneous groups. For various reasons, the project objectives regarding change in division of labor were not fully implemented. I argue that the reason can be seen in terms of the workers´ collective and infer that "new" ways of opposing change might be observable in the future. Additionally, by analyzing my own recollections of blue-collar work, I conclude that the worker´s collective in the future, as a result of globalization, labor-saving technology and new production concepts might take a differentiated form. This means also that the "collective identity" of the worker or the relations of workers to work and to life outside work will, instead of being uniform, be differentiated. Other changes might be understood in terms of a weakened or even obliterated workers´collective. In part IV, based on empirical studies of how midwives cooperate with other professions within heterogeneous groups, I conclude that the problems regarding different hierarchical positions of group members can be described in terms of professionalization. Additionally, by carrying out a discourse analysis of the discourse of midwifery, I investigate what role it plays in the professonalization of midwives and show that it draws upon the concept of the female midwife and the male obstetrician and that the discursive professonalization strategies used both toward the medical profession and toward groups subordinate to the midwives - which are based on the discourse - are generated. These two groups of papers focus on and investigate different types of defensive strategies used to cope with the subordinate or intermediate position of respective group. They also explore the different ways (by the worker´s collective and the discourse of midwifery) whereby a collective identity is formed and transformed. The last part of the thesis, including one paper, focuses problems related to cooperation within inter-professional teams.Godkänd; 1998; 20061123 (haneit

Development and visualisation of a recycling plant

Sweden is one of the countries with the highest recycling and waste processes rates. Over the years the landfill has been reduced and replaced by better recycling and waste-to-energy through combustion. However, a large amount of the waste that goes to to combustion and landfill are still useable if recycled. Therefore there is a demand of finding a more efficient solution for recycling material. The report covers development and visualisation of a concept for a single stream recycling plant that could be applied on waste in Sweden. Materials and waste has been studied and evaluated to find seven fractions to recycle from a mixed waste stream: mixed paper, PE, PP, HDPE, ferrous metals, non ferrous metals, and wood. Machines were selected and 3D modelled. Photogrammetry was used to recreate a topography of the surroundings to put the plant in. Animations were made of the exterior and interior demonstrating how the waste arrives to the plant, gets sorted, and finally transported away. Since the work is on a conceptual level the report provides recommendations and future work for how to further develop the plant, and finally build it in Sweden
