    This study aims to reveal the astronomy-related self-efficacy beliefs of pre-service teachers studying science education, primary school education, and social studies education programmes. The study is conducted using the survey design, a quantitative research method. The study sample consists of 322 pre-service teachers in their third or fourth year of a science education, primary school education, or social studies education programme at a university in Turkey’s Central Anatolia Region during the 2016 fall semester. The Astronomy Teaching Self-Efficacy Belief Scale developed by Güneş was used as the data collection tool. SPSS 22 was used to analyse the data, and the analyses benefited from descriptive and inferential statistics. Based on the findings, the pre-service teachers’ total scores for astronomy self-efficacy showed no significant difference in terms of certain variables (i.e., gender, age, year, and having taken a previous astronomy course). However, significant differences were found regarding self-efficacy scores in terms of the programme and having taken part in astronomy and sky-gazing activity. Concerning the obtained results, the following suggestions can be made: pre-service teachers should be actively involved during the astronomy course, and their classroom management experiences should be promoted to improve their astronomy self-efficacy belief levels.     Investigation of Preservice Science Teachers’ Comprehension of the Star, Sun, Comet and Constellation Concepts

    The purpose of this study is to reveal preservice science teachers’ perceptions related to the sun, star, comet and constellation concepts. The research was carried out by 56 preservice science teachers (4 th grade) at Kastamonu University taking astronomy course in 2014-2015 academic year. For data collection open-ended questions that required defining, drawing and association of concepts was used. Data was collected in two stages before and after relevant concepts were taught. The collected data were analyzed using different rubrics. It is seen that preservice teachers’ insufficient knowledge, alternative ideas and figures away from scientific knowledge about star, sun, constellation and comet concepts that determined in pre-test showed a showed a decrease in post-test. Besides, even though there is an increase in star concept-sun, constellation and comet concept associations in post-test in comparison with pre-test, it is understood that some ideas of preservice teachers remained the same. In the light of the results, it is thought that learners are being inexperienced in astronomy, it is required to benefit from teaching materials such as three dimensional models, conceptual change texts, telescope, etc. in teaching basic astronomy concepts.     Native English speaking teachers and non-native English speaking teachers in İstanbul : a perception analysis

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between the career perceptions of native English speaking teachers (NESTs) and non-native English speaking teachers (NNESTs) working at universities in Istanbul, and the two groups’ perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of NESTs and NNESTs. This study was conducted with 172 participants working in 10 different institutions in İstanbul. Data was collected through a questionnaire consisting of four parts. The questionnaire contained multiple-choice items, open-ended questions, and Likert-scale items. In addition, 15 participants were interviewed. Quantitative data analysis techniques were used to analyze the data from the questionnaires. To analyze the data, frequencies, percentages, means, correlations, and ttests were calculated. The data from the interviews was analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques. The results reveal that a great majority of the respondents view English language teaching (ELT) as a career or profession. When the two groups were compared, the percentage of the NNESTs who view ELT as a career or profession is higher than that of NESTs. While indicating similar viewpoints between NESTs and NNESTs regarding their views of ELT, the study found differences in the perceptions of the important qualifications of teachers, and the strengths and weaknesses of NESTs and NNESTs. Overall, the findings suggest that the ‘native speaker fallacy’ may still have validity even though both groups of participants refrained from publicly accepting it.Ezberci, EbruM.S

    Bu çalışmanın amacı, yıldız kavramıyla ilgili yurt içi kaynaklı çalışmaları çözümleyerek bir bütünlük içinde yansıtmak ve bu anlamda farkındalık oluşturmaktır. Bu amaçla, 2001-2014 yılları arasında yapılan çalışmalardan yıldız kavramını konu alan 39 çalışma tematik analizden geçirilmiştir. Çalışma doküman incelemesi yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Yıldız kavramına yönelik olarak gerçekleştirilen çalışmalar, oluşturulan matristen yararlanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda, genelde astronomi konusu altında yıldızlara yer verildiği ve yayınlanan çalışma sayısının 2010 yılından itibaren bir artış gösterdiği, örneklemlerin ise belirli illerde yoğunlaştığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Yöntem çeşitliliğinin fazla olduğu, veri toplama aracı olarak en fazla çoktan seçmeli başarı testlerinin, analiz yöntemi olarak da f/yüzde/aritmetik ortalama istatistiklerinin çoğunlukla kullanıldığı belirlenmiştir. Çalışmalardan elde edilen bulgular genellikle alternatif fikirlerinin ifade edildiği niteliklerde yazılmış, diğer çalışmalarda da yıldızlara ilişkin öğrenme güçlüklerini ifade eden bulgulara yer verilmiştir. Çalışmalardan elde edilen sonuçların genelinde de yıldızlar konusunda yeterli bilgiye sahip olunmadığı belirtilmiştir. İncelenen çalışmalarda sunulan önerilerin büyük çoğunluğunda her gruba yönelik sunulduğu belirlenmiştir

    Determine of Alternative Ideas of Science Teacher Candidates’ about Some Astronomical Concepts

    Araştırmanın amacı Teknoloji Destekli Öğretim (TEDÖ) uygulamaları kapsamında öğretim gören fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının öğretim uygulamalarından önce ve sonra astronominin bazı temel kavramlarına yönelik alternatif fikirlerini belirlemektir. Çalışma tek grup ön-son test yarı deneysel desen ile yürütülmüştür. Araştırma, Fen Bilgisi Eğitimi programında okuyan ve astronomi dersini alan 77 öğretmen adayı ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bektaşlı (2013) tarafından geliştirilen Astronomi Kavram Testi (AstroCoT) ölçeği kullanılarak elde edilen veriler, SPSS 22 programı kullanılarak betimsel analiz teknikleriyle ve Bao (1999) tarafından geliştirilen analiz tekniği esas alınarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda temel astronomi kavramlarına yönelik olarak fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının alternatif fikirlerle öğrenme ortamına geldiği ve öğrencilerin genellikle çeldiricilerde yığıldığı görülmektedir. Katılımcıların uygulama öncesi ve sonrası alternatif fikirleri değerlendirildiğinde genelde öğrencilerin TEDÖ uygulamaları sonrasında alternatif fikirlerinin azaldığı görülmektedir. Katılımcıların son test skorları ve yoğunlaşmalarının orta ve yüksek düzeye çıkmasından da bu durum anlaşılmaktadır.The aim of this study is to determine the alternative conceptions of pre-service science teachers receiving education through Technology-Based Education (TBE) practices concerning some basic concepts of astronomy before and after the teaching practices. The single-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was used in the study. The research participants were 77 pre-service teachers studying at the Department of Science Teaching of a university in Turkey and receiving the astronomy course. The data obtained through the Astronomy Concept Test (AstroCoT) developed by Bektaşlı (2013) were analyzed based on the analysis technique developed by Bao (1999) and descriptive analysis techniques via SPSS 22. It was found out that the pre-service science teachers arrived in the classroom environment with alternative conceptions concerning the basic concepts of astronomy and mostly had conceptions appearing similar to the main ones. The participants’ alternative conceptions before and after the teaching process show that their alternative conceptions had decreased by the end of the TBE practices in general. This is also evident in the participants’ posttest scores and the medium-level and high-level concentrations they displayed at the end of the process

    Eggshell calcification after intrathyroidal hemorrhage of retrosternal thyroid

    We report a rare event of old hemorrhage into a thyroid causing respiratory distress. A 67-year-old man with chronic cough and recent dysphagia was found to have a retrosternal mass extending into the visceral mediastinum on chest roentgenogram. A computed tomographic (CT) scan confirmed eggshell callcification, which was 53 × 53 × 80 mm in size a retrosternal thyroid mass and revealed significant tracheal deviation to the right due to an extensive mass surrounded by a calcificated capsule in the left lobe of the thyroid gland with extension to the upper mediastinum. He successfully underwent left lobectomy of the thyroid gland with sternotomy. The pathological examination revealed intrathyroidal hemorrhage of the thyroid gland with massive intracystic old bleeding

    Post-treatment Effects of Erythropoietin and Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid on Recovery from Cisplatin-induced Acute Renal Failure in the Rat

    5-Lipoxygenase inhibitor and human recombinant erythropoietin might accelerate renal recovery in cisplatin-induced acute renal failure rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into four groups: 1) normal controls; 2) Cisplatin group-cisplatin induced acute renal failure (ARF) plus vehicle treatment; 3) Cisplatin+nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) group-cisplatin induced ARF plus 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor treatment; 4) Cisplatin+erythropoietin (EPO) group-cisplatin induced ARF plus erythropoietin treatment. On day 10 (after 7 daily injections of NDGA or EPO), urea nitrogen and serum Cr concentrations were significantly lower in the Cisplatin+NDGA and Cisplatin+EPO groups than in the Cisplatin group, and 24 hr urine Cr clearances were significantly higher in the Cisplatin+EPO group than in the Cisplatin group. Semi-quantitative assessments of histological lesions did not produce any significant differences between the three treatment groups. Numbers of PCNA(+) cells were significantly higher in Cisplatin, Cisplatin+NDGA, and Cisplatin+EPO groups than in normal controls. Those PCNA(+) cells were significantly increased in Cisplatin+NDGA group. These results suggest that EPO and also NDGA accelerate renal function recovery by stimulating tubular epithelial cell regeneration

    Effects of Celecoxib and Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid on Puromycin Aminonucleoside-Induced Nephrosis in the Rat

    The selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and 5-lipoxygenase (LOX) inhibitors might inhibit prostaglandin synthesis and reduce proteinuria. The present study was designed to investigate the anti-proteinuric effects of nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) as compared with celecoxib in puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN) nephrosis rats. Fifty five male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups; A, normal control; B, PAN group; C, PAN+COX-2 inhibitor (celecoxib) group; and D, PAN+5-LOX inhibitor (NDGA) group. After induction of PAN nephrosis through repeated injections of PAN (7.5 and 15 mg/100 g body weight), rats were treated with celecoxib, NDGA, or vehicle for 2 weeks. Twenty four hour urine protein excretions were significantly lower in PAN+celecoxib and PAN+NDGA groups than in PAN group. Serum creatinine (SCr) concentrations and 24 hr urine creatinine clearances (CCr) were not significantly different in the four groups. Electron microscopy showed that podocyte morphology was changed after the induction of PAN nephrosis and was recovered after celecoxib or NDGA administration. Celecoxib significantly recovered the expressions of nephrin, CD2AP, COX-2, and TGF-β. NDGA also recovered TGF-β expression, but did not alter the expressions of nephrin, CD2AP and COX-2. The present study suggested that celecoxib and NDGA might effectively reduce proteinuria in nephrotic syndrome without impairing renal function
