    A discrete constitutive model for transverse and shear damage of symmetric laminates with arbitrary stacking sequence

    A damage constitutive model in conjunction with a 2-D finite element discretization is presented for predicting onset and evolution of matrix cracking and subsequent stiffness reduction of symmetric composite laminates with arbitrary stacking sequence subjected to membrane loads. The formulation uses laminae crack densities as the only state variables, with crack growth driven by both mechanical stress and residual stress due to thermal expansion. The formulation is based on fracture mechanics in terms of basic materials properties, lamina moduli, and critical strain energy release rates GIC and GIIC, only. No additional adjustable parameters are needed to predict the damage evolution. Spurious strain localization and mesh size dependence are intrinsically absent in this formulation. Thus, there is no need to define a characteristic length. Comparison of model results to experimental data is presented for various laminate stacking sequences. Prediction of crack initiation, evolution, and stiffness degradation compare very well to experimental data

    Degradation of 4-Chlorophenol in a Batch Electrochemical Reactor Using BDD Electrodes

    The influence of current density (j) (0.25, 0.30, 0.25 and 0.40 A/cm2), initial pH (2.6, 6.5 and 12), stirring speed (As) (400, 500 and 600 rpm), and initial concentration of 4-chlorophenol ([4-CP]0) (300, 500 and 700 mg/L) on degradation of persistent pollutant in a batch electrochemical cell without divisions is presented in this paper. The electrochemical cell was composed of two boron-doped diamond electrodes (BDD). The results of the study showed that best conditions for total degradation of 4-CP were: j of 0.40 A/cm , initial pH of 6.5, As of 500 rpm, and [4-CP]0 of 500 mg/L, after 150 min of reaction time. Removal of total organic carbon (TOC) was 83% at these conditions. The byproducts were identified by UHPLC. This allowed for the proposal of a degradation pathway of 4-CP at the best conditions. Furthermore, these results demonstrate that the electrochemical method employed in this study allows high percentages (96%) of degradation of 4-CP and that the process is applicable to wastewater treatment.CONACYT 26909

    Electrochemical Mineralization of Ibuprofen on BDD Electrodes in an Electrochemical Flow Reactor: Numerical Optimization Approach

    Statistical analysis was applied to optimize the electrochemical mineralization of ibuprofen with two boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes in a continuous electrochemical flow reactor under recirculation batch mode. A central composite rotatable (CCR) experimental design was used to analyze the e ect of initial pH (2.95–13.04), current intensity (2.66–4.34 A), and volumetric flow rate (0.16–1.84 L/min) and further optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) to obtain the maximum mineralization e ciency and the minimum specific energy consumption. A 91.6% mineralization e ciency (EM) of ibuprofen with a specific energy consumption (EC) of 4.36 KW h/g TOC within 7 h of treatment was achieved using the optimized operating parameters (pH0 = 12.29, I = 3.26 A, and Q of 1 L/min). Experimental results of RSM were fitted via a third-degree polynomial regression equation having the performance index determination coe cients (R2) of 0.8658 and 0.8468 for the EM and EC, respectively. The reduced root-mean-square error (RMSE) was 0.1038 and 0.1918 for EM and EC, respectively. This indicates an e cient predictive performance to optimize the operating parameters of the electrochemical flow reactor with desirability of 0.9999993. Besides, it was concluded that the optimized conditions allow to achieve a high percentage of ibuprofen mineralization (91.6%) and a cost of 0.002 USD $/L.     Pretreatment of Real Wastewater from the Chocolate Manufacturing Industry through an Integrated Process of Electrocoagulation and Sand Filtration

    En este artículo se analizó el efecto de un proceso acoplado de electrocoagulación y filtración, para remover partículas suspendidas en un agua residual procedente de una industria de chocolates.The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of removal of suspended solids in terms of turbidity, color, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) when integrating the electrocoagulation process using aluminum sacrificial anodes and the sand filtration process as a pretreatment of wastewater from the chocolate manufacturing plant in Toluca, México. Wastewater from the chocolate manufacturing industry used in this study is classified as nontoxic, but is characterized as having a high content of color (5952 ± 76 Pt-Co), turbidity (1648 ± 49 FAU), and COD (3608 ± 250 mg/L). Therefore, enhanced performance could be achieved by combining pretreatment techniques to increase the efficiencies of the physical, chemical, and biological treatments. In the integrated process, there was a turbidity reduction of 96.1 ± 0.2% and an increase in dissolved oxygen from 3.8 ± 0.05 mg/L (inlet sand filtration) to 6.05 ± 0.03 mg/L (outlet sand filtration) after 120 min of treatment. These results indicate good water quality necessary for all forms of elemental life. Color and COD removals were 98.2 ± 0.2% and 39.02 ± 2.2%, respectively, during the electrocoagulation process (0.2915 mA/cm2 current density and 120 min of treatment). The proposed integrated process could be an attractive alternative of pretreatment of real wastewater to increase water quality of conventional treatments

    Effect of remote ischaemic conditioning on clinical outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (CONDI-2/ERIC-PPCI): a single-blind randomised controlled trial.

    BACKGROUND: Remote ischaemic conditioning with transient ischaemia and reperfusion applied to the arm has been shown to reduce myocardial infarct size in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). We investigated whether remote ischaemic conditioning could reduce the incidence of cardiac death and hospitalisation for heart failure at 12 months. METHODS: We did an international investigator-initiated, prospective, single-blind, randomised controlled trial (CONDI-2/ERIC-PPCI) at 33 centres across the UK, Denmark, Spain, and Serbia. Patients (age >18 years) with suspected STEMI and who were eligible for PPCI were randomly allocated (1:1, stratified by centre with a permuted block method) to receive standard treatment (including a sham simulated remote ischaemic conditioning intervention at UK sites only) or remote ischaemic conditioning treatment (intermittent ischaemia and reperfusion applied to the arm through four cycles of 5-min inflation and 5-min deflation of an automated cuff device) before PPCI. Investigators responsible for data collection and outcome assessment were masked to treatment allocation. The primary combined endpoint was cardiac death or hospitalisation for heart failure at 12 months in the intention-to-treat population. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02342522) and is completed. FINDINGS: Between Nov 6, 2013, and March 31, 2018, 5401 patients were randomly allocated to either the control group (n=2701) or the remote ischaemic conditioning group (n=2700). After exclusion of patients upon hospital arrival or loss to follow-up, 2569 patients in the control group and 2546 in the intervention group were included in the intention-to-treat analysis. At 12 months post-PPCI, the Kaplan-Meier-estimated frequencies of cardiac death or hospitalisation for heart failure (the primary endpoint) were 220 (8·6%) patients in the control group and 239 (9·4%) in the remote ischaemic conditioning group (hazard ratio 1·10 [95% CI 0·91-1·32], p=0·32 for intervention versus control). No important unexpected adverse events or side effects of remote ischaemic conditioning were observed. INTERPRETATION: Remote ischaemic conditioning does not improve clinical outcomes (cardiac death or hospitalisation for heart failure) at 12 months in patients with STEMI undergoing PPCI. Por consiguiente, una persona puede construir su propia marca y ofrecer sus servicios o productos dependiendo de su experiencia tanto laboral como profesional, y poder brindar la oportunidad de mostrar a los clientes potenciales habilidades y fortalezas que la competencia no posee. para desarrollar una marca, primero se necesita crear una estrategia digital que consiste en diseñar un plan de acción desde la creación del logo de la marca hasta la propuesta final de un calendario de contenido para cumplir los objetivos de la marca, estudiar la competencia, analizar los objetivos a los que se dirigirá, etc. En resumen, crear la estrategia digital con los puntos claves determinará que una marca logre el posicionamiento dentro de un mercado específico hasta poder convertirse en un referente en las redes sociales.     Study of Delamination in Composites by Using the Serial/Parallel Mixing Theory and a Damage Formulation

    This work presents a new procedure to deal with the delamination problem found in laminated composites, based in a continuum mechanics formulation. The procedure proposed obtains the composite constitutive performance with the Serial/Parallel mixing theory, developed by F. Rastellini. This theory characterizes composite materials by coupling the constitutive behaviour of the composite components, imposing an iso–strain relation among the components in the fibre (or parallel) direction and an iso–stress relation in the remaining directions (serial directions). The proposed procedure also uses a damage formulation to characterize the constitutive behaviour of matrix component in order to obtain the stress–strain performance of this material. With these two formulations, the delamination phenomenon is characterized naturally by the numerical simulation, being unnecessary the definition of special elements or computationally expensive techniques like the definition of contact elements or mesh separation. Matrix failure, as a result of the stress state found in it, leads to a reduction of the stiffness and strength capacity of the composite in its serial direction. This reduction provides a composite performance equivalent to what is found in a delaminated material. To prove the ability of the formulation proposed to solve delamination problems, the End Notch Failure test is numerically simulated and the results obtained are compared with experimental ones. The agreement found in the results with both simulations, numerical and experimental, validate the proposed methodology to solve the delamination problem

    Identification of Fracture Toughness for Discrete Damage Mechanics Analysis of Glass-Epoxy Laminates

    A methodology for determination of the intralaminar fracture toughness is presented, based on fitting discrete damage mechanics (DDM) model predictions to available experimental data. DDM is constitutive model that, when incorporated into commercial finite element software via user material subroutines, is able to predict intralaminar transverse and shear damage initiation and evolution in terms of the fracture toughness of the composite. The applicability of the DDM model is studied by comparison to available experimental data for Glass-Epoxy laminates. Sensitivity of the DDM model to h- and p-refinement is studied. Also, the effect of in-situ correction of strength is highlighted
