    University–industry collaboration: using meta-rules to overcome barriers to knowledge transfer

Available from Springer Verlag via the DOI in this record.University–industry knowledge transfer is an important source wealth of creation for all partners; however, the practical management of this activity within universities is often hampered by procedural rigidity either through the absence of decision-making protocols to reconcile conflicting priorities or through the inconsistent implementation of existing policies. This is problematic, since it can impede operational effectiveness, prevent inter-organisational knowledge-creation and hamper organisational learning. This paper addresses this issue by adopting a cross-discipline approach and presenting meta-rules as a solution to aid organisational decision making. It is proposed that meta-rules can help resolve tensions arising from conflicting priorities between academics, knowledge transfer offices and industry and help facilitate strategic alignment of processes and policies within and between organisations. This research contributes to the growing debate on the strategic challenges of managing knowledge transfer and presents meta-rules as a practical solution to facilitate strategic alignment of internal and external stakeholder tensions. Meta-rules has previously only been applied in a computer intelligence context however, this research proves the efficacy of meta rules in a university–industry knowledge transfer context. This research also has practical implications for knowledge transfer office managers who can use meta-rules to help overcome resource limitations, conflicting priorities and goals of diverse internal and external stakeholders

    Energy expenditure and feeding practices and tolerance during the acute and late phase of critically ill COVID-19 patients

    Background & aims: Different metabolic phases can be distinguished in critical illness, which influences nutritional treatment. Achieving optimal nutritional treatment during these phases in critically ill patients is challenging. COVID-19 patients seem particularly difficult to feed due to gastrointestinal problems. Our aim was to describe measured resting energy expenditure (mREE) and feeding practices and tolerance during the acute and late phases of critical illness in COVID-19 patients.  Methods: Observational study including critically ill mechanically ventilated adult COVID-19 patients. Indirect calorimetry (Q-NRG+, Cosmed) was used to determine mREE during the acute (day 0–7) and late phase (>day 7) of critical illness. Data on nutritional intake, feeding tolerance and urinary nitrogen loss were collected simultaneously. A paired sample t-test was performed for mREE in both phases.  Results: We enrolled 21 patients with a median age of 59 years [44–66], 67% male and median BMI of 31.5 kg/m2 [25.7–37.8]. Patients were predominantly fed with EN in both phases. No significant difference in mREE was observed between phases (p = 0.529). Sixty-five percent of the patients were hypermetabolic in both phases. Median delivery of energy as percentage of mREE was higher in the late phase (94%) compared to the acute phase (70%) (p = 0.001). Urinary nitrogen losses were significant higher in the late phase (p = 0.003).  Conclusion: In both the acute and late phase, the majority of the patients were hypermetabolic and fed enterally. In the acute phase patients were fed hypocaloric whereas in the late phase this was almost normocaloric, conform ESPEN guidelines. No significant difference in mREE was observed between phases. Hypermetabolism in both phases in conjunction with an increasing loss of urinary nitrogen may indicate that COVID-19 patients remain in a prolonged acute, catabolic phase

    Ontology driven feedforward risk management

    Organizations are increasingly relying on projects to support their activities. With this increase, the management of these projects is becoming critical. New methods, tools and frameworks appear in order to improve the success rate of these projects. However, being complex endeavours, projects face numerous challenges that have to be addressed with proper risk management. Various risk management frameworks have been developed in order to support project managers in their task of identifying and controlling risk. Although these frameworks are effective in reducing the impact of risk, they are slow to implement. In order to more productively address these risks, we have developed an ontology to support feedforward risk management. This ontology can be implemented in project management software to provide project managers with a multi-level approach of the risks associated with their projects. The scope and breadth of the risks identified by the software will be closely related to the project data collected in the system, reducing the need for a lengthy setup. Moreover, using data collected by the project management software, the system will be able to proactively raise management awareness towards potential upcoming issues

    Associations between outdoor temperature and bright sunlight with metabolites in two population-based European cohorts

    Background and aims Outdoor temperature and bright sunlight may directly and/or indirectly modulate systemic metabolism. We assessed the associations between outdoor temperature and bright sunlight duration with metabolomics. Methods and Results Cross-sectional analyses were undertaken in non-diabetic individuals from the Oxford BioBank (OBB; N=6,368; mean age 47.0 years, males 44%) and the Netherlands Epidemiology of Obesity (NEO; N=5,916; mean age 55.6 years, males 43%) study. Data on mean outdoor bright sunlight and temperature were collected from local weather stations in the week prior to blood sampling. Fasting serum levels of 148 metabolites, including 14 lipoprotein subclasses, were measured using NMR spectroscopy. Linear regression analyses were performed to assess the associations between mean outdoor temperature and bright sunlight duration with metabolomics adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, season and either outdoor temperature or bright sunlight. A higher mean outdoor temperature was associated with increased serum concentrations of lipoprotein (sub)particles (β (SE) = 0.064 (0.018) SD per 5 degrees Celsius, p=5.03e-4) and certain amino acids such as phenylalanine (0.066 (0.016) SD, p=6.44e-05) and leucine (0.111 (0.018) SD, p=1.25e-09). In contrast, longer duration of bright sunlight was specifically associated with lower concentrations of very low-density lipoprotein (sub)particles (e.g., VLDL cholesterol (-0.024 (0.005) SD per 1-hour bright sunlight, p=8.06e-6)). The direction of effects was generally consistent between the OBB and NEO, although effect sizes were generally larger in the OBB. Conclusions Increased bright sunlight duration is associated with an improved metabolic profile whilst higher outdoor temperature may adversely impact cardiometabolic health

    Early hypophosphatemia in critically ill children and the effect of parenteral nutrition: A secondary analysis of the PEPaNIC RCT

    Background & aims: Hypophosphatemia during critical illness has been associated with adverse outcome. The reintroduction of enteral or parenteral nutrition, leading to refeeding hypophosphatemia (RFH), has been presented as potential risk factor. We investigated the occurrence of early RFH, its association with clinical outcome, and the impact of early parenteral nutrition (PN) on the development of early RFH in pediatric critical illness. Methods: This is a secondary analysis of the PEPaNIC randomized controlled trial (N = 1440), which showed that withholding supplemental parenteral nutrition (PN) for 1 week (late-PN) in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) accelerated recovery and reduced new infections compared to early-PN (0.16 mmol/L within 3 days of admission to the PICU. The association between baseline characteristics and early RFH, and the association of early RFH with clinical outcome were investigated using logistic and linear regression models, both uncorrected and corrected for possible confounders. To examine the impact of nutritional intake on phosphate concentrations, structural nested mean models with propensity score and censoring models were used. Results: A total of 1247 patients were eligible (618 early-PN, 629 late-PN). Early RFH occurred in 40 patients (3%) in total, significantly more in the early-PN group (n = 31, within-group occurrence 5%) than in the late-PN-group (n = 9, within-group occurrence 1%, p < 0.001). Patients who were older (OR 1.14 (95% CI 1.08; 1.21) per year added, p < 0.001) and who had a higher Pediatric Risk of Mortality (PIM3) score had a higher risk of developing early RFH (OR 1.36 (95% CI 1.15; 1.59) per unit added, p < 0.001), whereas patients in the late-PN group had a lower risk of early RFH (OR 0.24 (95% CI 0.10; 0.49), p < 0.001). Early RFH was significantly associated with a 56% longer PICU stay (p = 0.003) and 42% longer hospital stay (p = 0.007), but not with new infections (OR 2.01 (95% CI 0.90; 4.30), p = 0.08) or length of mechanical ventilatory support (OR 1.05 (95% CI −3.92; 6.03), p = 0.68), when adjusted for possible confounders. Increase of parenteral nutrition intake (in % kcal of predicted resting energy expenditure) decreased phosphate concentrations (c = −0.002 (95% CI -0.002; −0.001). Conclusions: Early RFH occurred in 3% of critically ill children. Patients randomized to late-PN had a lower chance of developing early RFH, which may be explained by the more gradual build-up of nutrition. As early RFH might impact recovery, it is important to closely monitor phosphate concentrations in patients, especially of those at risk for early RFH
