Perylene-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks for Acid Vapor Sensing.
Traditionally, the properties and functions of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are defined by their constituting building blocks, while the chemical bonds that connect the individual subunits have not attracted much attention as functional components of the final material. We have developed a new series of dual-pore perylene-based COFs and demonstrated that their imine bonds can be protonated reversibly, causing significant protonation-induced color shifts toward the near-infrared, while the structure and crystallinity of the frameworks are fully retained. Thin films of these COFs are highly sensitive colorimetric acid vapor sensors with a detection limit as low as 35 μg L-1 and a response range of at least 4 orders of magnitude. Since the acidochromism in our COFs is a cooperative phenomenon based on electronically coupled imines, the COFs can be used to determine simultaneously the concentration and protonation strength of nonaqueous acid solutions, in which pH electrodes are not applicable, and to distinguish between different acids. Including the imine bonds as function-determining constituents of the framework provides an additional handle for constructing multifunctional COFs and extending the range of their possible applications
The Relationship between Therapeutic Alliance and Service User Satisfaction in Mental Health Inpatient Wards and Crisis House Alternatives: A Cross-Sectional Study
Background
Poor service user experiences are often reported on mental health inpatient wards. Crisis houses are an alternative, but evidence is limited. This paper investigates therapeutic alliances in acute wards and crisis houses, exploring how far stronger therapeutic alliance may underlie greater client satisfaction in crisis houses.
Methods and Findings
Mixed methods were used. In the quantitative component, 108 crisis house and 247 acute ward service users responded to measures of satisfaction, therapeutic relationships, informal peer support, recovery and negative events experienced during the admission. Linear regressions were conducted to estimate the association between service setting and measures, and to model the factors associated with satisfaction. Qualitative interviews exploring therapeutic alliances were conducted with service users and staff in each setting and analysed thematically.
Results
We found that therapeutic alliances, service user satisfaction and informal peer support were greater in crisis houses than on acute wards, whilst self-rated recovery and numbers of negative events were lower. Adjusted multivariable analyses suggest that therapeutic relationships, informal peer support and negative experiences related to staff may be important factors in accounting for greater satisfaction in crisis houses. Qualitative results suggest factors that influence therapeutic alliances include service user perceptions of basic human qualities such as kindness and empathy in staff and, at service level, the extent of loss of liberty and autonomy.
Conclusions and Implications
We found that service users experience better therapeutic relationships and higher satisfaction in crisis houses compared to acute wards, although we cannot exclude the possibility that differences in service user characteristics contribute to this. This finding provides some support for the expansion of crisis house provision. Further research is needed to investigate why acute ward service users experience a lack of compassion and humanity from ward staff and how this could be changed
The Malthusian Paradox: performance in an alternate reality game
The Malthusian Paradox is a transmedia alternate reality game (ARG) created by artists Dominic Shaw and Adam Sporne played by 300 participants over three months. We explore the design of the game, which cast players as agents of a radical organisation attempting to uncover the truth behind a kidnapping and a sinister biotech corporation, and highlight how it redefined performative frames by blurring conventional performer and spectator roles in sometimes discomforting ways. Players participated in the game via a broad spectrum of interaction channels, including performative group spectacles and 1-to-1 engagements with game characters in public settings, making use of low- and high-tech physical and online artefacts including bespoke and third party websites. Players and game characters communicated via telephony and social media in both a designed and an ad-hoc manner. We reflect on the production and orchestration of the game, including the dynamic nature of the strong episodic narrative driven by professionally produced short films that attempted to respond to the actions of players; and the difficulty of designing for engagement across hybrid and temporally expansive performance space. We suggest that an ARG whose boundaries are necessarily unclear affords rich and emergent, but potentially unsanctioned and uncontrolled, opportunities for interactive performance, which raises significant challenges for design
Managing Injuries of the Neck Trial (MINT) : design of a randomised controlled trial of treatments for whiplash associated disorders
Background: A substantial proportion of patients with whiplash injuries develop chronic
symptoms. However, the best treatment of acute injuries to prevent long-term problems is
uncertain. A stepped care treatment pathway has been proposed, in which patients are given advice
and education at their initial visit to the emergency department (ED), followed by review at three
weeks and physiotherapy for those with persisting symptoms. MINT is a two-stage randomised
controlled trial to evaluate two components of such a pathway: 1. use of The Whiplash Book versus
usual advice when patients first attend the emergency department; 2. referral to physiotherapy
versus reinforcement of advice for patients with continuing symptoms at three weeks.
Methods: Evaluation of the Whiplash Book versus usual advice uses a cluster randomised design
in emergency departments of eight NHS Trusts. Eligible patients are identified by clinicians in
participating emergency departments and are sent a study questionnaire within a week of their ED
attendance. Three thousand participants will be included. Patients with persisting symptoms three
weeks after their ED attendance are eligible to join an individually randomised study of
physiotherapy versus reinforcement of the advice given in ED. Six hundred participants will be
randomised. Follow-up is at 4, 8 and 12 months after their ED attendance. Primary outcome is the
Neck Disability Index (NDI), and secondary outcomes include quality of life and time to return to
work and normal activities. An economic evaluation is being carried out.
Conclusion: This paper describes the protocol and operational aspects of a complex intervention
trial based in NHS emergency and physiotherapy departments, evaluating two components of a
stepped-care approach to the treatment of whiplash injuries. The trial uses two randomisations,

Divergent compensatory responses to high-fat diet between C57BL6/J and C57BLKS/J inbred mouse strains
Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are polygenic disorders with complex pathophysiologies; recapitulating them with mouse models is challenging. Despite 70% genetic homology, C57BL/6J (BL6) and C57BLKS/J (BLKS) inbred mouse strains differ in response to diet- and genetic-induced obesity. We hypothesized these differences would yield insight into IGT and T2DM susceptibility and response to pharmacological therapies. To this end, male 8-wk-old BL6 and BLKS mice were fed normal chow (18% kcal from fat), high-fat diet (HFD; 42% kcal from fat), or HFD supplemented with the PPARγ agonist pioglitazone (PIO; 140 mg PIO/kg diet) for 16 wk. Assessments of body composition, glucose homeostasis, insulin production, and energy metabolism, as well as histological analyses of pancreata were undertaken. BL6 mice gained weight and adiposity in response to HFD, leading to peripheral insulin resistance that was met with increased β-cell proliferation and insulin production. By contrast, BLKS mice responded to HFD by restricting food intake and increasing activity. These behavioral responses limited weight gain and protected against HFD-induced glucose intolerance, which in this strain was primarily due to β-cell dysfunction. PIO treatment did not affect HFD-induced weight gain in BL6 mice, and decreased visceral fat mass, whereas in BLKS mice PIO increased total fat mass without improving visceral fat mass. Differences in these responses to HFD and effects of PIO reflect divergent human responses to a Western lifestyle and underscore the careful consideration needed when choosing mouse models of diet-induced obesity and diabetes treatment
Rotation Periods, Inclinations, and Obliquities of Cool Stars Hosting Directly Imaged Substellar Companions: Spin-Orbit Misalignments are Common
The orientation between a star's spin axis and a planet's orbital plane
provides valuable information about the system's formation and dynamical
history. For non-transiting planets at wide separations, true stellar
obliquities are challenging to measure, but lower limits on spin-orbit
orientations can be determined from the difference between the inclination of
the star's rotational axis and the companion's orbital plane (). We
present results of a uniform analysis of rotation periods, stellar
inclinations, and obliquities of cool stars (SpT F5) hosting directly
imaged planets and brown dwarf companions. As part of this effort, we have
acquired new values for 22 host stars with the high-resolution
Tull spectrograph at the Harlan J. Smith telescope. Altogether our sample
contains 62 host stars with rotation periods, most of which are newly measured
using light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. Among these,
53 stars have inclinations determined from projected rotational and equatorial
velocities, and 21 stars predominantly hosting brown dwarfs have constraints on
. Eleven of these (52% of the sample) are likely
misaligned, while the remaining ten host stars are consistent with spin-orbit
alignment. As an ensemble, the minimum obliquity distribution between 10-250 AU
is more consistent with a mixture of isotropic and aligned systems than either
extreme scenario alone--pointing to direct cloud collapse, formation within
disks bearing primordial alignments and misalignments, or architectures
processed by dynamical evolution. This contrasts with stars hosting directly
imaged planets, which show a preference for low obliquities. These results
reinforce an emerging distinction between the orbits of long-period brown
dwarfs and giant planets in terms of their stellar obliquities and orbital
