Course Design in Teaching Aviation English as EOP

    Get PDF
The paper intends to contribute to the development of teaching EOP by presenting the experience gained in designing and teaching an intensive Aviation English course to Czech Air Force professionals. It is focused on course design, namely on the process of its endless refinement. It analyses the outcomes of learners’ questionnaires evaluating 11 two-week course runs in the years 2013-2016, and presents how they contributed to the modification of the course design. In addition to that, it suggests some measures that might be adopted to encourage learners’ professional development and sustainable lifelong learning

Pleiotropic effects of niacin: Current possibilities for its clinical use

    Get PDF
Niacin was the first hypolipidemic drug to significantly reduce both major cardiovascular events and mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease. Niacin favorably influences all lipoprotein classes, including lipoproteina, and belongs to the most potent hypolipidemic drugs for increasing HDL-C. Moreover, niacin causes favorable changes to the qualitative composition of lipoprotein HDL. In addition to its pronounced hypolipidemic action, niacin exerts many other, non-hypolipidemic effects (e.g., antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic), which favorably influence the development and progression of atherosclerosis. These effects are dependent on activation of the specific receptor HCA2. Recent results published by the two large clinical studies, AIM-HIGH and HPS2-THRIVE, have led to the impugnation of niacin’s role in future clinical practice. However, due to several methodological flaws in the AIM-HIGH and HPS2-THRIVE studies, the pleiotropic effects of niacin now deserve thorough evaluation. This review summarizes the present and possible future use of niacin in clinical practice in light of its newly recognized pleiotropic effects

Flavobacterium flabelliforme sp. nov. and Flavobacterium geliluteum sp. nov., two multidrug-resistant psychrotrophic species isolated from Antarctica

Despite unfavourable Antarctic conditions, such as cold temperatures, freeze-thaw cycles, high ultraviolet radiation, dryness and lack of nutrients, microorganisms were able to adapt and surprisingly thrive in this environment. In this study, eight cold-adapted Flavobacterium strains isolated from a remote Antarctic island, James Ross Island, were studied using polyphasic taxonomic approach to determine their taxonomic position. Phylogenomic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene and 92 core genes clearly showed that these strains formed two distinct phylogenetic clusters comprising three and five strains, with average nucleotide identities significantly below 90 % in between both proposed species as well as between their closest phylogenetic relatives. Phenotyping revealed a unique pattern of biochemical and physiological characteristics enabling differentiation from the closest phylogenetically related Flavobacterium spp. Chemotaxonomic analyses showed that type strains P4023T and P7388T were characterized by the major polyamine sym-homospermidine and a quinone system containing predominantly menaquinone MK-6. In the polar lipid profile phosphatidylethanolamine, an ornithine lipid and two unidentified lipids lacking a functional group were detected as major lipids. These characteristics along with fatty acid profiles confirmed, that these species belong to the genus Flavobacterium. Thorough genomic analysis revealed presence of numerous cold-inducible or cold-adaptation associated genes, such as cold-shock proteins, proteorhodopsin, carotenoid biosynthetic genes or oxidative-stress response genes. Genomes of type strains surprisingly harboured multiple prophages, with many of them predicted to be active. Genome-mining identified biosynthetic clusters in type strain genomes with majority not matching any known biosynthetic genes which indicates further research possibilities involving these psychrotrophic bacteria. Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed multidrug-resistant phenotype that was correlated with in silico antibiotic resistance prediction. Interestingly, while typical resistance finder tools failed to detect genes responsible for antibiotic resistance, genomic prediction confirmed multidrug-resistant profile and suggested even broader resistance than tested. Results of this study confirmed and thoroughly characterized two novel psychrotrophic Flavobacterium species, for which names Flavobacterium flabelliforme sp. nov. and Flavobacterium geliluteum sp. nov. are proposed

Church Music of Johann Sebastian Bach

Annotation: Málková, Eva. Church Music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Prague: Hussite Theological Faculty, Charles University, 2012. Thesis. The aim of this thesis is to introduce church music of Johann Sebastian Bach and its theological announcement. By looking up and appraising musical-theological elements at Bach's work this thesis brings near to the reader the theological, philosophical and mystic thinking of Bach. By pre-understanding and complexity of perception of Bach's church music is possible to see deep sense and aim of artist's work. In the first (theoretical) part I am engaged in systems of thinking that could Bach's church work influence. Then I am specifying the pieces that are supposed to be church music. In the second (practical) part I am looking for musical- theological elements that could Bach be influenced with. By researching of Bach's artistic style I am trying to find correlation of musical and theological contents and I am trying to point out that the message of Bach's church work is relevant

Path to Success or Failure in Foreign Language Speaking

    No full text
The article contributes to the research field of foreign language acquisition in adult learners. It presents the results of a survey examining the development of English language speaking in Czech university students. The survey was aimed at identifying differences in previous language achievements, motivation and English language learning experience between successful and unsuccessful English language speakers in undergraduates at the University of Defence in Brno. Two groups of fifty students at two different levels of their speaking skill in English were interviewed in Czech about their previous language achievements, motivation to learn English and English language learning experience. The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and analysed using inferential and descriptive statistics. The outcomes have revealed that the groups differed significantly in the type of school the students had studied at prior to the university, the grades they had achieved in their secondary school leaving examinations in English Language and Czech Language and Literature, the number of grammatical categories they had been able to recall in the interview, and the degree of their motivation to learn English. Furthermore, the analysis of students’ opinions on the development of their speaking skill in English has revealed that successful foreign language speakers actively seek opportunities to speak in the foreign language, and attribute their success to factors within their control, which is not the case of the unsuccessful ones. The author proposes that undergraduates with low foreign language skills should be detected and interviewed in their native language upon their entry to university to reflect on their language learning experience, and encouraged to resume responsibility for their language skills development

Cooperation between parents and school at the beginning of school attendance

This diploma thesis deals with cooperation between family and school at the beginning of school attendance. Position of that subject in Czech education system is clarified in the theoretical part, as well as some educational programs and initiatives focusing on this domain of a teacher's work. The practical part presents action research, which is focused on the reflection of my own work experience. It explores possibilities of specific methods and forms of cooperation of class teacher with parents according to an analysis of effectiveness of cooperation between family and school evaluation tool of "Competent Educators of the 21st Century: ISSA's Definition of Quality Pedagogy". This research confirmed that the parents welcome any offer to closer involment in school education and choose the kind of cooperation that best suits their needs and abilities.
