LHC and lepton flavour violation phenomenology of a left-right extension of the MSSM
We study the phenomenology of a supersymmetric left-right model, assuming
minimal supergravity boundary conditions. Both left-right and (B-L) symmetries
are broken at an energy scale close to, but significantly below the GUT scale.
Neutrino data is explained via a seesaw mechanism. We calculate the RGEs for
superpotential and soft parameters complete at 2-loop order. At low energies
lepton flavour violation (LFV) and small, but potentially measurable mass
splittings in the charged scalar lepton sector appear, due to the RGE running.
Different from the supersymmetric 'pure seesaw' models, both, LFV and slepton
mass splittings, occur not only in the left- but also in the right slepton
sector. Especially, ratios of LFV slepton decays, such as Br()/Br() are sensitive to the
ratio of (B-L) and left-right symmetry breaking scales. Also the model predicts
a polarization asymmetry of the outgoing positrons in the decay , A ~ [0,1], which differs from the pure seesaw 'prediction' A=1$.
Observation of any of these signals allows to distinguish this model from any
of the three standard, pure (mSugra) seesaw setups.Comment: 43 pages, 17 figure
Introduction to a Culturally Sensitive Measure of Well-Being: Combining Life Satisfaction and Interdependent Happiness Across 49 Different Cultures
How can one conclude that well-being is higher in country A than country B, when well-being is being measured according to the way people in country A think about well-being? We address this issue by proposing a new culturally sensitive method to comparing societal levels of well-being. We support our reasoning with data on life satisfaction and interdependent happiness focusing on individual and family, collected mostly from students, across forty-nine countries. We demonstrate that the relative idealization of the two types of well-being varies across cultural contexts and are associated with culturally different models of selfhood. Furthermore, we show that rankings of societal well-being based on life satisfaction tend to underestimate the contribution from interdependent happiness. We introduce a new culturally sensitive method for calculating societal well-being, and examine its construct validity by testing for associations with the experience of emotions and with individualism-collectivism. This new culturally sensitive approach represents a slight, yet important improvement in measuring well-being
A SNAP-Tagged Derivative of HIV-1âA Versatile Tool to Study Virus-Cell Interactions
Fluorescently labeled human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) derivatives, combined with the use of advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques, allow the direct visualization of dynamic events and individual steps in the viral life cycle. HIV proteins tagged with fluorescent proteins (FPs) have been successfully used for live-cell imaging analyses of HIV-cell interactions. However, FPs display limitations with respect to their physicochemical properties, and their maturation kinetics. Furthermore, several independent FP-tagged constructs have to be cloned and characterized in order to obtain spectral variations suitable for multi-color imaging setups. In contrast, the so-called SNAP-tag represents a genetically encoded non-fluorescent tag which mediates specific covalent coupling to fluorescent substrate molecules in a self-labeling reaction. Fusion of the SNAP-tag to the protein of interest allows specific labeling of the fusion protein with a variety of synthetic dyes, thereby offering enhanced flexibility for fluorescence imaging approaches
