At the beginning of the 20th century, Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo was the first coal production area of Spain and the first lead foundry worldwide. The French company Societè Minière et Metallurgique de Peñarroya, founded in 1881 by Charles Ledoux, settled in this territory to exploit its resources and built a colony differentiated from the rest of the population. The vertiginous growth of the company contributed to the rise of the factory complex called Cerco Industrial, nowadays in ruins. The present project pretends to put a value on this archaeological site, in order to enhance the industrial heritage of the region; promote its protection, rehabilitation and preservation; as well as making this heritage accessible to all visitors and inhabitants. The industrial heritage is conceived here as a significant factor in local development, in a depressed region and stuck in the middle of the crisis of the mining sector

Rueda, aisladas durante las vendimias de los años 2010 a 2012.Although yeasts of the Saccharomyces genus have traditionally been used in winemaking processes, the trend in the last few years in wine industry has been to opt for the use of non-Saccharomyces yeasts in winemaking, thus seeking to improve different aspects of the wines. A great deal of research has been carried out, focusing mainly on the study of these yeasts during the first phases of fermentation and very positive results have been obtained, showing that they can be considered as elements of high oenological interest. In the present study, some vinifications have been carried out through sequential inoculation of different non-Saccharomyces and Saccharomyces yeasts previously isolated, selected and characterized enzymatically and biochemically, in order to be able to verify in the winery their enological characteristics. These yeasts come from the same Verdejo variety vineyard belonging to a winery from D.O. Rueda, isolated during the 2010 to 2012 harvests.Grado en Enologí

Double or nothing: red flag symptoms of critical carotid stenosis, a case report

    Get PDF
Abstract Background Detailed knowledge of every possible manifestation of Internal Carotid Artery (ICA) disease is important. For improving detection and a timely adoption of secondary prevention procedures or treatments. Transient oculomotor nerve palsies have been described associated with stenosis or occlusion of the ICA. Case presentation We described a patient that develop a sequential combination of transient monocular loss of vision followed by binocular diplopia secondary to an unstable atherosclerotic preocclusive stenosis of an internal carotid artery previously treated with radiotherapy. Conclusions The peculiar sequence of transient monocular vision that give rise later into a transient binocular diplopia (double or nothing) should be kept in mind as a possible manifestation of critical stenosis of ICA

Dark fermentation as an environmentally sustainable WIN-WIN solution for bioenergy production

The current energy and environmental crisis, linked to increasing industrialisation, has progressively driven the adoption of solutions focused on circular life cycle thinking, such as waste management with resource recovery and decarbonization of technologies. In this context, this study was built to quantify the environmental performance of a two-stage wastewater treatment process (dark fermentation with anaerobic digestion) in which three feedstocks (sugar beet molasses, cheese whey and wine vinasses mixed with wastewater treatment plant sludge) from the food industry were valorized as hydrogen. In this regard, several environmental profiles were created using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology with two system boundaries (cradle-to-gate and gate-to-gate) and two methods (ReCiPe Midpoint and Endpoint). Furthermore, this research was synergistically complemented with an energy analysis including indicators and input-output flow balances to provide a win-win solution for food waste utilization. The results have taken different directions depending on the methodological assumptions considered but, in general terms, the sugar beet molasses scenario can be claimed in all cases as the energetically sustainable process with the best environmental profile. With an energy surplus of 155%, the cradle-to-gate scenario recorded the best environmental impact in 4/8 midpoint categories and an overall reduction of 67% and 94% (excluding co-products) for the ReCiPe damage single score compared to the wine vinasses and wastewater treatment plant sludge and cheese whey scenarios, respectively. In this sense, the viability and competitiveness of these two scenarios is compromised by the lack of energy self-sufficiency (there is a 53% deficiency in the wine vinasses and wastewater treatment sludge scenario) and the lack of climate-neutral outcomes (a result of 5510 mPt/Nm3 H2 shows that the cheese whey scenario is far from being a zero-emission process)This research was funded by HP-NANOBIO Project (PID2019-111163RB-I00). A series of nine derivatives (2⁻10) were prepared from the diterpene solidagenone (1) and their structures were elucidated by means of spectroscopic studies. Their ability to inhibit inflammatory responses elicited in peritoneal macrophages by TLR ligands was investigated. Compounds 5 and 6 showed significant anti-inflammatory effects, as they inhibited the protein expression of nitric oxide synthase (NOS-2), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and cytokine production (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-12) induced by the ligand of TLR4, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), acting at the transcriptional level. Some structure⁻activity relationships were outlined. Compound 5 was selected as a representative compound and molecular mechanisms involved in its biological activity were investigated. Inhibition of NF-κB and p38 signaling seems to be involved in the mechanism of action of compound 5. In addition, this compound also inhibited inflammatory responses mediated by ligands of TLR2 and TLR3 receptors. To rationalize the obtained results, molecular docking and molecular dynamic studies were carried out on TLR4. All these data indicate that solidagenone derivative 5 might be used for the design of new anti-inflammatory agents.S

Labdane conjugates protect cardiomyocytes from doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity

The cardiovascular side effects associated with doxorubicin (DOX), a wide spectrum anticancer drug, have limited its clinical application. Therefore, to explore novel strategies with cardioprotective effects, a series of new labdane conjugates were prepared (6a-6c and 8a-8d) from the natural diterpene labdanodiol (1). These hybrid compounds contain anti-inflammatory privileged structures such as naphthalimide, naphthoquinone, and furanonaphthoquinone. Biological activity of these conjugates against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity was tested in vitro and the potential molecular mechanisms of protective effects were explored in H9c2 cardiomyocytes. Three compounds 6c, 8a, and 8b significantly improved cardiomyocyte survival, via inhibition of reactive oxygen species-mediated mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathways (extracellular signal-regulated kinase and c-Jun N-terminal kinase) and autophagy mediated by Akt activation. Some structure-activity relationships were outlined, and the best activity was achieved with the labdane-furonaphthoquinone conjugate 8a having an N-cyclohexyl substituent. The findings of this study pave the way for further investigations to obtain more compounds with potential cardioprotective activity. This study was supported by Grant RTI2018‐094356‐BC21 from the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MICIU) to A. Synthesis of Quinoline and Dihydroquinoline Embelin Derivatives as Cardioprotective Agents

    Get PDF
A set of new dihydroquinoline embelin derivatives was obtained from the reaction of the natural benzoquinone embelin (1) with anilines and aromatic aldehydes in the presence of AgOTf. The synthesis of these compounds involves the formation of a Knoevenagel adduct, followed by nucleophilic addition of aniline and subsequent electrocyclic ring closure. The scope of the reaction regarding the aldehydes and anilines was determined. Quinoline derivatives were also obtained from the corresponding dihydroquinolines under oxidation with DDQ. The cardioprotective activity of the synthesized compounds was screened using a doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity model in H9c2 cardiomyocytes. Some structure-activity relationships were outlined, and the best activities were achieved with quinoline-embelin derivatives having a 4-nitrophenyl group attached at the pyridine ring. The obtained results indicated that embelin derivatives 4i, 6a, 6d, 6k, and 6m could have potential as cardioprotective agents, as they attenuated a DOX-induced cardiotoxicity effect acting on oxidative stress and apoptosis. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support from the Spanish MICIU RTI2018-094356-B-C21 to A.E.B., I.C., and B.H. and Agencia Canaria de Investigación, Innovación y Sociedad de la Información Pro ID 2021010037 to A.E.B. Lymphopenia; Multiple sclerosis; PharmacovigilanceLinfopenia; Esclerosis múltiple; FarmacovigilanciaLimfopènia; Esclerosi múltiple; FarmacovigilànciaBackground: Severe cases of lymphopenia have been reported during siponimod clinical trials, which may negatively impact its benefit/risk profile. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the incidence of lymphopenia following the initiation of siponimod treatment in clinical practice. The secondary objectives included the analysis of factors predisposing to and the clinical relevance of lymphopenia events. Methods: In this multicenter retrospective cohort study, information collected from the medical records of 129 patients with MS from 15 tertiary hospitals in Spain who initiated treatment with Siponimod were followed-up for at least 3 months, including at least one lymphocyte count evaluation per patient. Results: Of the 129 patients, 121 (93.6%) reported lymphopenia events, including 110 (85.3%) with grade ≤ 3 and 11 (8.5%) with grade 4 lymphopenia, higher than those reported in the pivotal clinical trial (73.3% and 3.3% for grade ≤ 3 and grade 4 lymphopenia, respectively). The study included an unexpectedly high proportion of male subjects (72.9%), which might have led to an underestimation of the actual magnitude of the risk. Conclusions: In this study, the incidence and severity of lymphopenia after starting siponimod treatment were higher than those reported in previous clinical trials. Therefore, our results reinforce the need for the closer monitoring of novel MS drugs in clinical practice, as well as larger and longer follow-up studies to properly characterize this risk
