    Classical Lie symmetries and reductions of a nonisospectral Lax pair

    The classical Lie method is applied to a nonisospectral problem associated with a system of partial differential equations in 2+1 dimensions (Maccari A, J. Math. Phys. 39, (1998), 6547-6551). Identification of the classical Lie symmetries provides a set of reductions that give rise to different nontrivial spectral problems in 1+1 dimensions.     The Role of Emotional Intelligence on Psychological Adjustment and Peer Victimization in a Sample of Spanish Adolescents

    In the last decades, interest in the study of the negative consequences of bullying for the victims has increased. Victims are often known to show emotional adjustment issues, such as negative self-concept and low life satisfaction. Moreover, some studies have observed important associations between self-concept and life satisfaction, in which a positive self-concept is related to high levels of life satisfaction. Other studies have pointed out the importance of emotional intelligence (EI), as a regulatory and protective factor against the negative impact of victimization on adjustment in adolescents. The main objective of this work was to analyze the mediating effect of self-concept on life satisfaction and the moderated mediation effect of EI on self-concept and life satisfaction in the context of peer victimization. The participants in the study were 1,318 Spanish students of both sexes and aged between 11 and 18 (M = 13.8, SD = 1.32) years, from four compulsory secondary education centers. The results indicated that, on the one hand, self-concept mediated the relationship between victimization and life satisfaction. On the other hand, EI was not only positively associated with self-concept, but it also significantly moderated the negative influence of victimization on self-concept. EI may also indirectly moderate the relationship between victimization and life satisfaction through the self-concept. These data show the importance of EI as a possible protective and moderating factor of the negative effect of bullying on emotional adjustment, which is interesting for the design of future prevention and intervention programs in school contexts.This research was funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of Spain and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund—FEDER—“One way to make Europe,” grant number PID2019-109442RB-I00, with EE as the Principal Researcher

    Phytoseiid mites (Acari, Phytoseiidae) inhabiting plants in natural ecosystems from Tenerife and La Gomera islands (Canary Islands) have been studied. Surveys were conducted from 1997 to 2002. Eleven species were collected, one of them being reported for the first time from the Canary Islands and six of them reported for the first time from Tenerife and La Gomera islands. Euseius machadoi n. sp. collected from woody plants in the Canarian laurisilva is proposed as a new species.En muestreos realizados desde 1997 hasta 2002 se ha estudiado la fauna de åcaros fitoseidos (Acari, Phytoseiidae) asociada a plantas de ecosistemas naturales de las islas de Tenerife y La Gomera (Islas Canarias).     Enhancement of visuospatial working memory by the differential outcomes procedure in Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer’s Disease

    In the present study we investigated the efficacy of the differential outcome procedure (DOP) to improve visuospatial working memory in patients with Alzheimer’s disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). The DOP associates correct responses to the to-be-remember stimulus with unique outcomes. Eleven patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, 11 participants with MCI, and 17 healthy matched controls performed a spatial delayed memory task under the DOP and a control condition (non-differential outcomes –NOP-). We found that performance (terminal accuracy) was significantly better in the DOP condition relative to the NOP condition in all three groups of participants. AD patients performed worse, and took longer to benefit from the DOP. In line with previous animal and human research, we propose that the DOP activates brain structures and cognitive mechanisms that are less affected by healthy and pathological aging, optimizing in this way the function of the cognitive system

    6-Deoxyhexoses froml-Rhamnose in the Search for Inducers of the Rhamnose Operon: Synergy of Chemistry and Biotechnology

    In the search for alternative non‐metabolizable inducers in the l ‐rhamnose promoter system, the synthesis of fifteen 6‐deoxyhexoses from l ‐rhamnose demonstrates the value of synergy between biotechnology and chemistry. The readily available 2,3‐acetonide of rhamnonolactone allows inversion of configuration at C4 and/or C5 of rhamnose to give 6‐deoxy‐d ‐allose, 6‐deoxy‐d ‐gulose and 6‐deoxy‐l ‐talose. Highly crystalline 3,5‐benzylidene rhamnonolactone gives easy access to l ‐quinovose (6‐deoxy‐l ‐glucose), l ‐olivose and rhamnose analogue with C2 azido, amino and acetamido substituents. Electrophilic fluorination of rhamnal gives a mixture of 2‐deoxy‐2‐fluoro‐l ‐rhamnose and 2‐deoxy‐2‐fluoro‐l ‐quinovose. Biotechnology provides access to 6‐deoxy‐l ‐altrose and 1‐deoxy‐l ‐fructose

    TOY: A System for Experimenting with Cooperation of Constraint Domains

    AbstractThis paper presents, from a user point-of-view, the mechanism of cooperation between constraint domains that is currently part of the system TOY, an implementation of a constraint functional logic programming scheme. This implementation follows a cooperative goal solving calculus based on lazy narrowing. It manages the invocation of solvers for each domain, and projection operations for converting constraints into mate domains via mediatorial constraints. We implemented the cooperation among Herbrand, real arithmetic (R), finite domain (FD) and set (S) domains.     Proper motions in the VVV Survey: Results for more than 15 million stars across NGC 6544

    Context: In the last six years, the VVV survey mapped 562 sq. deg. across the bulge and southern disk of the Galaxy. However, a detailed study of these regions, which includes ∌36\sim 36 globular clusters (GCs) and thousands of open clusters is by no means an easy challenge. High differential reddening and severe crowding along the line of sight makes highly hamper to reliably distinguish stars belonging to different populations and/or systems. Aims: The aim of this study is to separate stars that likely belong to the Galactic GC NGC 6544 from its surrounding field by means of proper motion (PM) techniques. Methods: This work was based upon a new astrometric reduction method optimized for images of the VVV survey. Results: Photometry over the six years baseline of the survey allowed us to obtain a mean precision of ∌0.51\sim0.51 mas/yr, in each PM coordinate, for stars with Ks < 15 mag. In the area studied here, cluster stars separate very well from field stars, down to the main sequence turnoff and below, allowing us to derive for the first time the absolute PM of NGC 6544. Isochrone fitting on the clean and differential reddening corrected cluster color magnitude diagram yields an age of ∌\sim 11-13 Gyr, and metallicity [Fe/H] = -1.5 dex, in agreement with previous studies restricted to the cluster core. We were able to derive the cluster orbit assuming an axisymmetric model of the Galaxy and conclude that NGC 6544 is likely a halo GC. We have not detected tidal tail signatures associated to the cluster, but a remarkable elongation in the galactic center direction has been found. The precision achieved in the PM determination also allows us to separate bulge stars from foreground disk stars, enabling the kinematical selection of bona fide bulge stars across the whole survey area.
