German Classicists and the Hunt for Literary Papyri: Discovering New Materials about a Secret (and Hence Forgotten) Project
The essay focuses on the initiatives of German classicists to acquire papyri in the period predating the Great War (1890â1914). In Berlin, it was Hermann Diels (1848â1922) and Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff (1848â1931) who took the lead in an enterprise that would ultimately result in the founding and enlarging of some fifteen papyrus collections in Germany. Since it was considered counterproductive to reveal oneâs partners in the Egyptian antiquities market to possible competitors, most of the information was kept secret. Thus, although numerous leading philologists of the time were involved in the project, very few traces remain in their publications, and it was only seventy-five years after its disbandment that its fundamental documents were published. The complete picture may only be reconstructed from long forgotten archives that were rediscovered in the last decades
Critical behavior of the extended Hubbard model with bond dimerization
Exploiting the matrix-product-state based density-matrix renormalization
group (DMRG) technique we study the one-dimensional extended (-) Hubbard
model with explicit bond dimerization in the half-filled band sector. In
particular we investigate the nature of the quantum phase transition, taking
place with growing ratio between the symmetry-protected-topological and
charge-density-wave insulating states. The (weak-coupling) critical line of
continuous Ising transitions with central charge terminates at a
tricritical point belonging to the universality class of the dilute Ising model
with . We demonstrate that our DMRG data perfectly match with
(tricritical) Ising exponents, e.g., for the order parameter (1/24)
and correlation length (5/9). Beyond the tricritical Ising point, in
the strong-coupling regime, the quantum phase transition becomes first order.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, contributions to SCES 201
PHerc. 215: Ein Prosatext Juristischen (?) Inhalts
The paper presents the results of a preliminary study of PHerc. 215. It comprises an outline of the history and paleography of the scroll as well as a reconstruction of the order of fragments. The six major fragments are presented in a fresh transcription, with paleographical apparatus, as well as translation and commentary where applicable
Correlation functions of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures
We calculate the asymptotic behaviour of correlation functions as a function
of the microscopic parameters for a Bose-Fermi mixture with repulsive
interaction in one dimension. For two cases, namely polarized and unpolarized
fermions the singularities of the momentum distribution functions are
characterized as a function of the coupling constant and the relative density
of bosons.Comment: RevTeX 4, 10 pages, 2 figure
PHerc. 1475: Ein commentarius
The paper presents the results of a preliminary study of PHerc. 1475. The inventory number comprises pieces from two different scrolls. The major fragments of each are presented on the basis of a fresh transcription, with paleographical apparatus, as well as translation and commentary where applicable. New readings in the text and the subscriptio of PHerc. 1475 allow some inferences about the content
Die Götterbewegung (Phld., Di III, Kol. 10, 6 - Kol. 11,7)
The paper provides a new edition with a translation and philological commentary of the chapter concerning the motion of the gods from Philodemusâ On the Gods III. The edition comprises a diplomatic transcription and articulated text with a palaeographical and critical apparatus. A complete description of traces is added as an appendix
Zur Entsteheung der Hamburger Papyrussammlung
The article reconstructs the foundation of the papyrus collection in Hamburg and its acquisitions through the "Deutsches Papyruskartell". Documents about the restoration and publication of the papyri allow to identify the inventory numbers belonging to single lots
Berliner Papyruskodex mit Hom., Od. 13.110-126 und 137-154
Editio princeps with apparatus and commentary of two fragments from a papyrus codex from Hermopolis Magna, dating to the VI-VII century. The preserved text comprises Homer, Odyssee 13.110â126 and 137â154
Zur virtuellen Rekonstruktion von Scorza-Stapeln
From the virtual reconstruction of the scorza stacks it appears that the drawings of the Herculaneum papyri contain some additions of letters not read in the original, but supplied on philological grounds
Wilckens Arbeit am Editionsband der WuÌrzburger Papyri (P.WuÌrzb.)
The article retraces the genesis of Wilckenâs volume âMitteilungen aus der WuÌrzburger Papyrussammlungâ, the first volume of editions from the WuÌrzburg papyrus collection, published in 1934. It contains editions of several unpublished letters by Wilcken and O. Handwerker, the director of the University Library at WuÌrzburg
