Excitonic - vibronic coupled dimers: A dynamic approach
The dynamical properties of exciton transfer coupled to polarization
vibrations in a two site system are investigated in detail. A fixed point
analysis of the full system of Bloch - oscillator equations representing the
coupled excitonic - vibronic flow is performed. For overcritical polarization a
bifurcation converting the stable bonding ground state to a hyperbolic unstable
state which is basic to the dynamical properties of the model is obtained. The
phase space of the system is generally of a mixed type: Above bifurcation chaos
develops starting from the region of the hyperbolic state and spreading with
increasing energy over the Bloch sphere leaving only islands of regular
dynamics. The behaviour of the polarization oscillator accordingly changes from
regular to chaotic.Comment: uuencoded compressed Postscript file containing text and figures. In

Polymer-Based Batteries â Flexible and Thin Energy Storage Systems
Batteries have become an integral part of everyday lifeâfrom small coin cells to batteries for mobile phones, as well as batteries for electric vehicles and an increasing number of stationary energy storage applications. There is a large variety of standardized battery sizes (e.g., the familiar AAâbattery or AAAâbattery). Interestingly, all these battery systems are based on a huge number of different cell chemistries depending on the application and the corresponding requirements. There is not one single battery type fulfilling all demands for all imaginable applications. One battery class that has been gaining significant interest in recent years is polymerâbased batteries. These batteries utilize organic materials as the active parts within the electrodes without utilizing metals (and their compounds) as the redoxâactive materials. Such polymerâbased batteries feature a number of interesting properties, like high power densities and flexible batteries fabrication, among many more
Fuzzy cellular model for on-line traffic simulation
This paper introduces a fuzzy cellular model of road traffic that was
intended for on-line applications in traffic control. The presented model uses
fuzzy sets theory to deal with uncertainty of both input data and simulation
results. Vehicles are modelled individually, thus various classes of them can
be taken into consideration. In the proposed approach, all parameters of
vehicles are described by means of fuzzy numbers. The model was implemented in
a simulation of vehicles queue discharge process. Changes of the queue length
were analysed in this experiment and compared to the results of NaSch cellular
automata model.Comment: The original publication is available at http://www.springerlink.co
A realistic two-lane traffic model for highway traffic
A two-lane extension of a recently proposed cellular automaton model for
traffic flow is discussed. The analysis focuses on the reproduction of the lane
usage inversion and the density dependence of the number of lane changes. It is
shown that the single-lane dynamics can be extended to the two-lane case
without changing the basic properties of the model which are known to be in
good agreement with empirical single-vehicle data. Therefore it is possible to
reproduce various empirically observed two-lane phenomena, like the
synchronization of the lanes, without fine-tuning of the model parameters
Towards a realistic microscopic description of highway traffic
Simple cellular automata models are able to reproduce the basic properties of
highway traffic. The comparison with empirical data for microscopic quantities
requires a more detailed description of the elementary dynamics. Based on
existing cellular automata models we propose an improved discrete model
incorporating anticipation effects, reduced acceleration capabilities and an
enhanced interaction horizon for braking. The modified model is able to
reproduce the three phases (free-flow, synchronized, and stop-and-go) observed
in real traffic. Furthermore we find a good agreement with detailed empirical
single-vehicle data in all phases.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

Beam-Normal Single Spin Asymmetry in Elastic Electron Scattering off Si and Zr
We report on a new measurement of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry
in the elastic scattering of 570 MeV transversely polarized
electrons off Si and Zr at . The
studied kinematics allow for a comprehensive comparison with former results on
C. No significant mass dependence of the beam-normal single spin
asymmetry is observed in the mass regime from C to Zr.Comment: Submitted for publication to Physics Letters
Language and cultural capital in school experience of Polish children in Scotland
This article addresses the complex relationship between migration and education in the context of recent intra-European labour mobility. It considers how this mobility impacts the education and life chances of migrant students attending schools in Scotland, UK. By examining the experiences of Polish migrant children and youth at schools in Scotland, the article engages with the issues of language, cultural capital transferability and social positioning. Drawing on qualitative data from 65 in-depth interviews with school children aged 5â17âyears, their parents and teachers, as well as observations in the contexts of school and home, the article points to a range of factors affecting the transition of migrant pupils to new schools and social environments
Limiter lock systems at TEXTOR: flexible tools for plasma-wall investigation
Limiter lock systems on the top and the bottom of the TEXTOR vessel are essential elements for experimental investigations of plasma-wall interaction in a tokamak. The lock systems are designed as user facilities that allow the insertion of wall elements (limiter) and tools for diagnostic (electrical probes, gas injection) without breaking the TEXTOR vacuum. The specially designed holder on top of the central carrier and a powerful vacuum pump system permit the exchange of components within similar to1 h. Up to ten electrical signals, four thermocouples, and a gas supply can be connected at the holder interface. Between discharges, the inserted component can be positioned radially and turned with respect to the toroidal magnetic field. Additionally, the central carrier is electrically isolated to apply bias voltages and currents up to 1 kV and 1 kA, respectively. An important feature of the lock system is the good access for optical spectroscopic observation of the inserted components in the vicinity of the edge plasma. The whole spectrum from ultraviolet to infrared is covered by spectrometers and filters combined with cameras. Toroidally and poloidally resolved measurements are obtained front the view on top of the probes while the tangential poloidal view delivers radially and toroidally resolved information.A programmable logic controller (Simatic S5) that is operated inside the TEXTOR bunker and from remote locations outside the concrete wall drives all possible features of the lock system
