Classic Liberal Philosophers and their Contributions to Democracy & Justice: Discourses on Freedom, Equality, Reason, and Law
The goal of this article is to review the ideas set forth by classic liberal philosophers which contributed to the establishment of democratic values and the institutionalization of reason as a method. The emphasis is to examine the critical ideas which led to the study of natural law and civil society, focusing on freedom, equality, reason, and law. This review will provide social science students the foundational knowledge to understand the goals of human progress as expounded by classic liberal philosophers, as well as understanding reason as inextricable to democracy and the advancement of knowledge. The ideals set forth by the classic liberal philosophers such as Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Wollstonecraft, and Condorcet, have left a legacy of justice from which we can continue to progress as citizens and students
Asthma Predictors Influence on Self-management Asthma Education Status
ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to determine the characteristics of adults with active asthma who were most likely to acquire self-management asthma component education.MethodsWe analyzed adult data from the 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)-Asthma Call-back Survey (ACBS). Multivariate logistic regression and multivariate linear regression models were used to analyze the association between asthma self-management education and predictors.ResultsAdults who had health insurance (aB = 0.33 [SE = 0.15], p \u3c .05), routine care visits (aB = 0.75 [SE = 0.08], p \u3c .05) and hospitalization (aB = 0.50 [SE = 0.23], p \u3c .05) reported higher asthma education scores. Adults aged 18-34 years were more likely to report inhaler use instruction (aOR = 3.9; 95% CI: 2.5-6.3, p \u3c .05), than older adults aged 65 years and older. Having a formal education, being a woman, and being black increased the likelihood of having a higher self-management score.ConclusionHaving health insurance, making routine visits, and having asthma episodes were associated with multiple asthma education components which ensures social justice. Asthma control programs need to reexamine asthma education components to make sure they are promoted to persons regardless of their age, education level, or sex.
Phase Splitting for Periodic Lie Systems
In the context of the Floquet theory, using a variation of parameter
argument, we show that the logarithm of the monodromy of a real periodic Lie
system with appropriate properties admits a splitting into two parts, called
dynamic and geometric phases. The dynamic phase is intrinsic and linked to the
Hamiltonian of a periodic linear Euler system on the co-algebra. The geometric
phase is represented as a surface integral of the symplectic form of a

Cambios en el perfil bioquímico hepático de alpacas positivas a huevos de Fasciola hepática
The aim of this study was to determine changes in the liver biochemical profile in alpacas with presence of F. hepatica eggs. We used serum and feces samples of 35 male alpaca between 2-5 years old, 18 were positives and 17 were negatives in coproparasitologic analysis for F. hepatica eggs. Differences are showed (p<0.05) in the values of ALT, GGT and direct bilirubin between positives y negatives animals. We concluded that there is relationship between presence of F. hepatica eggs and high levels in the liver biochemical profile, maybe due to alterations in the hepatic parenchyma by chronic infection in alpacas.El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar cambios en el perfil bioquímico hepático en alpacas con presencia de huevos de F. hepatica en heces. Se utilizaron muestras de suero y heces de 35 alpacas machos de entre 2 y 5 años de edad, de los cuales 18 fueron positivos y 17 negativos al examen coproparasitológico (sedimentación) para identificación de huevos de F. hepática. Se observó diferencia significativa (p<0.05) entre los valores de ALT, GGT y bilirrubina directa entre los animales positivos y negativos. Concluimos que la presencia de huevos de Fasciola hepatica guarda relación con la elevación de algunos parámetros del perfil hepática posiblemente por alguna alteración en el parénquima producto de una infección crónica en alpacas
Transcriptome Profiling of Citrus Fruit Response to Huanglongbing Disease
Huanglongbing (HLB) or “citrus greening” is the most destructive citrus disease worldwide. In this work, we studied host responses of citrus to infection with Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CaLas) using next-generation sequencing technologies. A deep mRNA profile was obtained from peel of healthy and HLB-affected fruit. It was followed by pathway and protein-protein network analysis and quantitative real time PCR analysis of highly regulated genes. We identified differentially regulated pathways and constructed networks that provide a deep insight into the metabolism of affected fruit. Data mining revealed that HLB enhanced transcription of genes involved in the light reactions of photosynthesis and in ATP synthesis. Activation of protein degradation and misfolding processes were observed at the transcriptomic level. Transcripts for heat shock proteins were down-regulated at all disease stages, resulting in further protein misfolding. HLB strongly affected pathways involved in source-sink communication, including sucrose and starch metabolism and hormone synthesis and signaling. Transcription of several genes involved in the synthesis and signal transduction of cytokinins and gibberellins was repressed while that of genes involved in ethylene pathways was induced. CaLas infection triggered a response via both the salicylic acid and jasmonic acid pathways and increased the transcript abundance of several members of the WRKY family of transcription factors. Findings focused on the fruit provide valuable insight to understanding the mechanisms of the HLB-induced fruit disorder and eventually developing methods based on small molecule applications to mitigate its devastating effects on fruit production

Nightside clouds and disequilibrium chemistry on the hot Jupiter WASP-43b
Hot Jupiters are among the best-studied exoplanets, but it is still poorly understood how their chemical composition and cloud properties vary with longitude. Theoretical models predict that clouds may condense on the nightside and that molecular abundances can be driven out of equilibrium by zonal winds. Here we report a phase-resolved emission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-43b measured from 5 μm to 12 μm with the JWST’s Mid-Infrared Instrument. The spectra reveal a large day–night temperature contrast (with average brightness temperatures of 1,524 ± 35 K and 863 ± 23 K, respectively) and evidence for water absorption at all orbital phases. Comparisons with three-dimensional atmospheric models show that both the phase-curve shape and emission spectra strongly suggest the presence of nightside clouds that become optically thick to thermal emission at pressures greater than ~100 mbar. The dayside is consistent with a cloudless atmosphere above the mid-infrared photosphere. Contrary to expectations from equilibrium chemistry but consistent with disequilibrium kinetics models, methane is not detected on the nightside (2σ upper limit of 1–6 ppm, depending on model assumptions). Our results provide strong evidence that the atmosphere of WASP-43b is shaped by disequilibrium processes and provide new insights into the properties of the planet’s nightside clouds. However, the remaining discrepancies between our observations and our predictive atmospheric models emphasize the importance of further exploring the effects of clouds and disequilibrium chemistry in numerical models.Peer reviewe
