Evaluation and Needs Assessment of H.E.A.L’s Summer Youth Program

This is an evaluation of the Help Everyone Achieve Livelihood (H.E.A.L.) summer youth program for refugees between the ages of 14 and 21. Research into the issue of refugee youth not having sufficient public service programs available to aid in the transition to life in the US was examined in the literature review. Previous research suggests summer programs help form the bridge between the home culture and new culture of refugee youth. The H.E.A.L. program offers a variety of services to their clients which includes cultural orientation, job building, and ESL classes. The program runs six weeks during the summer and is looking for an evaluation to see what their strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities are. This evaluation will seek to answer H.E.A.L’s questions and see if the program is making a viable difference in the lives of its participants. Through the use of one on one interviews with program leaders, and results of focus groups with the target audience and their parents, this study evaluated the H.E.A.L summer youth program. Although there are programs available to help refugee youth when they arrive to Buffalo, there is a gap over the summer time. The study showed that most of the students who attended the H.E.A.L. program would not have had a positive or meaningful alternative. The impact of H.E.A.L. on these youth is positive as all participants and parents claimed there was a noticeable improvement in school and work search activities from attending the program. Previous studies have proven that refugee youth face many obstacles in education, employment, and cultural assimilation. The results show that the program is positively impacting its target audience but that it has some weaknesses that can be addressed

EVALUATION OF THE ECONOMIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INFLATION AND ITS DETERMINANTS IN RWANDA

    Get PDF
This study aimed to estimate the inflation determinants in the Rwandan economy from 1980 to 2018 periods, focusing more on the hypothesized drivers such as dollar exchange rate, interest rates, broad money supply and real national income (GDP). The study used quantitative analysis using an econometric model called Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). The findings of this study show that there is a long-run relationship between inflation and its hypothesized drivers mainly growth in GDP (positive), the Exchange rate (negative), Broad money supply growth (positive) and Interest rate (negative). JEL: E31, D51, P24  Article visualizations

Disclosure of HIV status and its impact on the loss in the follow-up of HIV-infected patients on potent anti-retroviral therapy programs ina (post-) conflict setting: A retrospective cohort study from Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo

    Get PDF
Background: The study aimed to identify the impact of non-disclosure of HIV status on the loss to follow-up (LTFU) of patients receiving anti-retroviral therapy. Methodology: A historic cohort of HIV patients from 2 major hospitals in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo was followed from 2004 to 2012. LTFU was defined as not taking an ART refill for a period of 3 months or longer since the last attendance, and had not yet been classified as ‘dead’ or ‘transferred-out’. Kaplan-Meier plots were used to determine the probability of LTFU as a function of time as inclusive of the cohort. The log-rank test was used to compare survival curves based on determinants. Cox proportional hazard modeling was used to measure predictors of LTFU from the time of treatment induction until December 15th, 2012 (the end-point). Results: The median follow-up time was 3.99 years (IQR = 2.33 to 5.59). Seventy percent of patients had shared their HIV status with others (95% CI: 66.3–73.1). The proportion of LTFU was 12% (95%CI: 9.6–14.4). Patients who did not share their HIV status (Adjusted HR 2.28, 95% CI 1.46–2.29), patients who did not live in the city of Goma (Adjusted HR 1.97, 95% CI 1.02–3.77), and those who attained secondary or higher education level (Adjusted HR 1.60, 95% CI 1.02–2.53) had a higher hazard of being LTFU. Conclusion: This study shows the relationship between the non–disclosure HIV status and LTFU. Healthcare workers in similar settings should pay more attention to clients who have not disclosed their HIV status, and to those living far from health settings where they receive medication.publishedVersio

Using the Rapid Catchment Appraisal process, this report summarises current information for the Lort and Young Rivers Catchment, 75 kilometres west of Esperance in Western Australia. The Rapid Catchment Appraisal (RCA) process is one of the processes included in the strategy to tackle salinity and its management in Western Australia. The RCA process provides a \u27snap shot\u27 of information on the risk and impact to agricultural production and natural resources within regional geographic catchments

Morphological and Vascular Study Of The Posterior Lumbar Epidural Fat

    Get PDF
Posterior lumbar epidural fat has been described by several authors in various fields: Anesthetic, Radiology and Neurochemistry. In this study, we tried to describe the position of this fat in the lumbar canal (L1-L5), its vascularization and drainage system. 8 Ivorian cadavers are used for the practice of dissection in the laboratory. The anterior abdominal region is chosen for the approach of the lumbar epidural region. The study investigated the situation, morphology and microcirculatory structure of fat at the lumbar level. The fatty clusters were embedded in fine vessels and were better vascularized and drained by veins of large caliber. In the vertebral canal, the fat was struck in the intervertebral foramina and was simply spread on the anterior surface of the ligamentum flavum. The fat as triangular shape with a vertebral base and a foamy summit it wanders in the cerebrospinal fluid. The lumbar epidural fat is better vascularized, and its venous drainage is made by large veins facing the intervertebral foramina embedded in areolar tissue traversed by nerve roots. Key Words: vertebral canal, fat, structure, vascularization.&nbsp
