Pottery from the Underwater Site of Mala Jana near Glavotok on the Island of Krk
Abundance of postmedieval glazed pottery was discovered in 1972 and 1973 at the underwater site of Mala Jana in the vicinity of Glavotok on the island of Krk. Total of 31 objects were inventoried in the Early Modern Period Collection of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral. Furthermore another 21 objects from the same site were recovered a year later and given to the Diocese of Krk. Presently they are on display in the exhibition room of the Frankopan citadel in Krk. Although certain finds have already been published individually, they have never been analyzed as a complete cargo, so this article offers the analysis of the entire assemblage of finds from the site of Mala Jana, dating the mentioned artifacts to the late 16th or early 17th century. The paper also analyzes potential trade routes possibly used for transport of such material
A Survey of Sophomore Students\u27 Impressions of Academic Advising Services at East Tennessee State University
This study of sophomore students\u27 at East Tennessee State University was conducted to determine students\u27 impressions of the institutional academic advising program, to assess students\u27 level of satisfaction with the academic advisor\u27s assistance with those topics discussed in academic advising sessions, and to determine students\u27 impressions of their academic advisor. The data collected in this study revealed that the sophomore students at ETSU were slightly dissatisfied with their advisor\u27s assistance. Data derived from comparative analyses for differences in impressions of academic advising services found that specific demographic groups were basically neutral in their satisfaction with advising. Few statistically significant differences were found in these demographic groupings. A comparative analysis of ETSU students to a national norm study revealed significant differences in the impressions of academic advising services. The ETSU students were significantly less satisfied than students from the national norm study. The data in this study indicated there was a need for improving the academic services available at ETSU. Several recommendations were made. Institutional strategies and programmatic strategies were outlined to improve academic advising at ETSU
LÚDICA EN AULAS DIFERENCIADAS, UNA PROPUESTA INNOVADORA PARA PROMOVER ACTITUDES FAVORABLES EN EL APRENDIZAJE DE LA QUÍMICA
The increasing disinterest showed by the students towards the learning of the chemistry has turned with the time, in one of the primary worries of different actors of the education; those who attribute the desmotivation to factors like kind, context, particular interests of the student, methodologies of class, between others. In response to these difficulties, the fontana Gymnasium (place of execution), it raises as alternative of education, the development of playful activities in differentiated classrooms, in order to motivate the learning in the students from the different emphasises that the college offers. This way, in the frame of this one work, were applied instruments of opinion and observation to detail the impacts that the strategies adopted as the college generate in the dynamics of class; thinking that the playful one and the differentiation reduces partly the gap that by the form, might generate the work developed of an independent way in the emphasis.
Kinesiology tape increases muscle tone, stiffness, and elasticity: Effects of the direction of tape application
The claim that the effects of kinesiology tape are different depending on the direction of tape application needs to be clearly ascertained. This study aimed to determine the immediate effects of two forearm kinesiology tape applications on muscle tone, stiffness, and elasticity of young individuals. Thirty-nine participants (15 men and 24 women) were randomized (1:1:1) to: the facilitatory group, receiving kinesiology tape applied from origin to insertion; the inhibitory group, receiving kinesiology tape applied from insertion to origin; or, a control group, without any intervention. The mechanical properties – tone, elasticity, and stiffness – of the forearm muscles were measured with a handheld mechanical impulse-based myotonometric device before and 30 min after the kinesiology tape application. Only the application of kinesiology tape from origin to insertion significantly increased muscle tone [16.6 (2.5) to 17.4 (3.5) Hz, p = 0.036], stiffness [318.3 (52) to 355.0 (87) N/m, p = 0.004], and elasticity [0.98 (0.1) to 1.10 (0.1), p = 0.023]. No changes were observed in both inhibitory kinesiology tape and the control group. In conclusion, kinesiology tape application has different effects depending on the direction of the taping application. The facilitatory tapping increased muscle tone, elasticity, and stiffness.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
This research is located in the field of qualitative research, where the main objective is to know the social imaginary that is built around the migration of Haitians, through the discursive validation of the stories and experiences of colleagues and co-workers Chileans of Haitian migrants in a local of the Vega Monumental in Concepción. The importance emerges from the need and lack of research that delves into how Chileans perceive migration, demographic, cultural, political, legal and labor, taking into account that within everyday contexts we face both personal and group discourses with respect to migration in the country and that are expressed in such common spaces as the university, retail, popular fairs, towns and even with members of the community where we live. This research has a phenomenological focus, which proposes a survey of the information, analysis of each of the discourses obtained, which were analyzed through hermeneutics, anticipating the results with respect to occupational apartheid generated by society and the employment of the occupational justice embodied by the same Chilean colleagues
From Green Technology to Functional Olive Oils: Assessing the Best Combination of Olive Tree-Related Extracts with Complementary Bioactivities
Our aim was to assess the combination of olive tree-related extracts with the most favorable profile of in vitro bioactive properties. We tested the antioxidant (increment of low-density lipoprotein resistance against oxidation), vasoactive (promotion of nitric oxide release and decrease of endothelin-1 production in human umbilical vein endothelial cells), anti-inflammatory (decrease of the endothelial production of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1), and antithrombotic (reduction of the endothelial release of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1) capacities of six phenolic extracts and three triterpenic acid solutions (Ps and Ts, respectively). We tested extracts alone and in combination, at nutritional (Ps: 0.05–0.5 μmol/L; Ts: 0.001–0.1 μmol/L) and nutraceutical doses (Ps: 1–10 μmol/L; Ts: 0.25–10 μmol/L). The combination of Ps rich in 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol (76%, P2), hydroxytyrosol (95%, P3), and oleuropein (70%, P4) (final nutritional concentration: 0.15 μmol/L; final nutraceutical concentration: 3 μmol/L) was the best in order to prepare functional products and nutraceuticals with cardioprotective properties, despite the fact that the isolated extract with the greatest in vitro properties was P5 (75% oleocanthal), suggesting a potential synergistic effect among different olive components
Effect of hemodialysis session on acute changes in inflammatory and cardiovascular risk biomarkers
Background: Inflammation is associated with enhanced cardiovascular risk profile and increased cardiovascular mortality in end-stage kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis. Mechanisms of activated acute phase reaction in patients on chronic hemodialysis remain to be identified. As successful treatment of the inflammatory condition in these patients may improve long-term survival, we studied potential changes in different inflammatory biomarkers of cardiovascular risk in end-stage kidney disease patients after a mid-week hemodialysis session.
Methods: Inflammatory biomarkers of cardiovascular risk (cystatin-C, homocysteine, C-reactive protein, procalcitonin, pentraxin-3, serum amyloid-A) and atherogenic plasma lipoproteins (Lipoprotein(a), cholesterol low and high density lipoproteins) were studied in 21 end-stage kidney disease patients previously and after a mid-week hemodialysis session.
Results: We found a significant reduction in serum levels of low molecular weight molecules: cystatin-C (5.56 to 1.85 mg/L, 66.73%, p < 0.001), homocysteine (22.85 to 13.25 µmol/L, 42.01%, p < 0.001) and procalcitonin (0.788 to 0.457 ng/mL, 42.01%, p < 0.001). Large molecules as C-reactive protein (9.70 to 9.90 mg/L, 2.06%, p = 0.022) and pentraxin-3 (1.67 to 4.28 ng/mL, 156%, p < 0.001) increased, but serum amyloid-A decreased (15.90 to 12.70 mg/L, 20.13%, p < 0.05). There was no change in Lipoprotein (a) levels.
Conclusion: Pentraxin-3 was a more specific inflammatory vascular marker than C-reactive protein, and the best inflammatory marker associated with hemodialysis. Homocysteine, procalcitonin and the other small proteins could be released and removed during hemodialysis session. Further studies are needed to understand the behavior and significance of these markers after successive hemodialysis
