Experimental evidence of chaotic advection in a convective flow
Lagrangian chaos is experimentally investigated in a convective flow by means
of Particle Tracking Velocimetry. The Fnite Size Lyapunov Exponent analysis is
applied to quantify dispersion properties at different scales. In the range of
parameters of the experiment, Lagrangian motion is found to be chaotic.
Moreover, the Lyapunov depends on the Rayleigh number as . A
simple dimensional argument for explaining the observed power law scaling is

Dissipative Particle Dynamics with Energy Conservation
The stochastic differential equations for a model of dissipative particle
dynamics with both total energy and total momentum conservation in the
particle-particle interactions are presented. The corresponding Fokker-Planck
equation for the evolution of the probability distribution for the system is
deduced together with the corresponding fluctuation-dissipation theorems
ensuring that the ab initio chosen equilibrium probability distribution for the
relevant variables is a stationary solution. When energy conservation is
included, the system can sustain temperature gradients and heat flow can be

Dissipative Particle Dynamics with energy conservation
Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) does not conserve energy and this
precludes its use in the study of thermal processes in complex fluids. We
present here a generalization of DPD that incorporates an internal energy and a
temperature variable for each particle. The dissipation induced by the
dissipative forces between particles is invested in raising the internal energy
of the particles. Thermal conduction occurs by means of (inverse) temperature
differences. The model can be viewed as a simplified solver of the fluctuating
hydrodynamic equations and opens up the possibility of studying thermal
processes in complex fluids with a mesoscopic simulation technique.Comment: 5 page
Testing the running of the cosmological constant with Type Ia Supernovae at high z
Within the Quantum Field Theory context the idea of a "cosmological constant"
(CC) evolving with time looks quite natural as it just reflects the change of
the vacuum energy with the typical energy of the universe. In the particular
frame of Ref.[30], a "running CC" at low energies may arise from generic
quantum effects near the Planck scale, M_P, provided there is a smooth
decoupling of all massive particles below M_P. In this work we further develop
the cosmological consequences of a "running CC" by addressing the accelerated
evolution of the universe within that model. The rate of change of the CC stays
slow, without fine-tuning, and is comparable to H^2 M_P^2. It can be described
by a single parameter, \nu, that can be determined from already planned
experiments using SNe Ia at high z. The range of allowed values for \nu follow
mainly from nucleosynthesis restrictions. Present samples of SNe Ia can not yet
distinguish between a "constant" CC or a "running" one. The numerical
simulations presented in this work show that SNAP can probe the predicted
variation of the CC either ruling out this idea or confirming the evolution

Industrial policy evaluation in the presence of spillovers
The shortage of studies on spatial spillovers of capital subsidy policies is rather surprising, considering that such policies are usually designed to generate spatial externalities. We propose a new framework that allows positive agglomeration effects to be contrasted with the negative cross-sectional substitution and the crowding-out effect. The global evaluation of the ATT and the spillover parameters shifts the spotlight from the policy effect on subsidised firms to the global effect of capital subsidy policies on the targeted territory. The empirical evaluation of a policy in Italy mainly directed towards small- and medium-sized firms shows that the impact on investments, turnover and employment is positive and large, but is negative on TFP. However, the employment growth is partially determined to the detriment of the untreated firms
Insight into the Properties of Heteroleptic Metal Dithiolenes: Multistimuli Responsive Luminescence, Chromism, and Nonlinear Optics
A comprehensive investigation of the functional properties of heteroleptic donor-M-acceptor dithiolene complexes Bu4N[MII(L1)(L2)] is presented (M = Pd, Pt). The acceptor L1 consists of the chiral (R)-(+)α-methylbenzyldithiooxamidate ((R)-α-MBAdto), the donor L2 is 2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato (dmit) in 1 (Pd) and 2 (Pt), 1,2-dicarbomethoxyethylenedithiolate (ddmet) in 3 (Pd) and 4 (Pt), or [4′,5′:5,6][1,4]dithiino[2,3-b]quinoxaline-1′,3′-dithiolato (quinoxdt) in 5 (Pd) and 6 (Pt). L1 is capable of undergoing proton exchange and promoting crystal formation in noncentrosymmetric space groups. L2 has different molecular structures while it maintains similar electron-donating capabilities. Thanks to the synergy of the ligands, 1-6 behave as H+ and Ag+ switchable linear chromophores. Moreover, the compounds exhibit a H+-switchable second-order NLO response in solution, which is maintained in the bulk for 1, 3, and 4 when they are embedded into a PMMA poled matrix. 5 and 6 show unique anti-Kasha H+ and Ag+ tunable colored emission originating from the quinoxdt ligand. A correlation between the electronic structure and properties is shown through density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations
Comparison of the EPIC Physical Activity Questionnaire with combined heart rate and movement sensing in a nationally representative sample of older British adults.
Objectives: To compare physical activity (PA) subcomponents from EPIC Physical Activity Questionnaire (EPAQ2) and combined heart rate and movement sensing in older adults. Methods: Participants aged 60–64y from the MRC National Survey of Health and Development in Great Britain completed EPAQ2, which assesses self-report PA in 4 domains (leisure time, occupation, transportation and domestic life) during the past year and wore a combined sensor for 5 consecutive days. Estimates of PA energy expenditure (PAEE), sedentary behaviour, light (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) were obtained from EPAQ2 and combined sensing and compared. Complete data were available in 1689 participants (52% women). Results: EPAQ2 estimates of PAEE and MVPA were higher than objective estimates and sedentary time and LPA estimates were lower [bias (95% limits of agreement) in men and women were 32.3 (261.5 to 122.6) and 29.0 (239.2 to 94.6) kJ/kg/day for PAEE; 24.6 (210.6 to 1.3) and 26.0 (210.9 to 21.0) h/day for sedentary time; 2171.8 (2454.5 to 110.8) and 260.4 (2367.5 to 246.6) min/day for LPA; 91.1 (2159.5 to 341.8) and 55.4 (2117.2 to 228.0) min/day for MVPA]. There were significant positive correlations between all self-reported and objectively assessed PA subcomponents (rho = 0.12 to 0.36); the strongest were observed for MVPA (rho = 0.30 men; rho = 0.36 women) and PAEE (rho = 0.26 men; rho = 0.25 women). Conclusion: EPAQ2 produces higher estimates of PAEE and MVPA and lower estimates of sedentary and LPA than objective assessment. However, both methodologies rank individuals similarly, suggesting that EPAQ2 may be used in etiological studies in this population

An overview of the smoothed dissipative particle dynamics (SDPD) method is presented in a format that tries to quickly answer questions that often arise among users and newcomers. It is hoped that the status of SDPD is clarified as a mesoscopic particle model and its potentials and limitations are highlighted, as compared with other methods
Patterns of Crime Victimization in Latin America
In this paper we draw a profile of the victims of crime in Latin America. We show that- at least for the case of property crime - the typical victims of crime in Latin America come from rich and middle class households and tend to live in larger cities. We also show that households living in cities experiencing rapid population growth are more likely to be victimized than households living in cities with stable populations. We offer various explanations to these facts, and while we cannot yet provide definite answers to some of the questions raised by this paper, we are at least able to reject some plausible hypotheses. On the whole, our results imply that urban crime in Latin America is, to an important extent, a reflection of the inability of many cities in the region to keep up with the increasing demands for public safety brought about by a hasty and disorderly urbanization process
