The advance in parallel that mechanics and electronics have gone through has created a new disruptive technology, known as micromachining; it has enhanced the design and manufacture of electrical and mechanical structures known under the name of Microelectromechanical Systems: MEMS. This disruptive technology has a significant potential to be applied on wearable electronics. How to determine the potential market of MEMS as an enabling technology applied to a product of wearable electronics? This paper proposes the use of the Bass model as a tool to define the degree of diffusion to identify the trend of adoption of the smart watch in different countries of the world and therefore the approach of market size, as a prospective study applied to consumer products, being these as the most promising use with future demand. It also shows the innovation vs. imitation effect, being these factors relevant to the development of marketing strategies and forecast demand of a new product

This article is based on three previous studies about land tenancy in the regions covered by the Integrated Rural Development Program (DRI) of Córdoba (1986), Sucre and Atlántico (1987). It discusses the main ideas, concerning the agrarian reform, found in these studies, as follows: 1. the reform should affect property of all sizes belonging to big landowners; 2. it is necessary that this reform plan include fertile and well located properties; 3. previous to the redistribution reform it is desirable to enforce tax on unimproved land and to stabilize land prices on the zone covered by the reform plan; 4. the reform plan should give priority to the welfare of small landowners (instead of wage-earners who don't possess land)

Stimulated Raman Scattering for All Optical Switches

We theoretically and experimentally investigate an all optical switch based on stimulated Raman scattering in optical fibers. The experimental setup consists of a Raman circuit of two stages connected in series through a bandpass filter. In the first stage, we have a saturated amplifier, in this stage the pump pulses are saturated when pump and signal are launched to the input or the pump pulses remain without saturation when pump only is launched at the input. The second stage works as the Raman amplifier; for this stage amplification is directly dependent on the pump power entering from the first stage. For the case when pump pulse only is launched at the input pass to the second stage without saturation and amplifies the signal entering in the second stage, very intense signal pulses appear at the output of this stage. For the case when both pump and signal pulses are launched to the input, the pump pulse is saturated in the first stage and the filter rejected the amplified signal, so that only low power pump enters the second stage and consequently no signal pulses appear at the output. We show that the contrast can be improved when using fibers with normal and anomalous dispersion connected in series in the first stage. The best contrast (the ratio of energies) obtained was 15 dB at 6 W pump peak power

The yield and regional composition of the carcass in females and males were evaluated in lambs of the Dorper x Pelibuey commercial crossbreed from the Los Cantiles sheep farm in the municipality of Puebla, Mexico. 150 runners were used, of which 75 Pelibuey and the same amount of Dorper x Pelibuey. The following were determined: live weight, height of the cross, height of the rump, length of the body, thoracic perimeter, depth of the thorax, perimeter of the rod, length of rump, width of the rump and width of the base of the tail. . 40 animals were slaughtered: 20 of each sex, eight per month, four males and four females from the second to the sixth month of birth. For the analysis of the performance and composition of the carcass in females and males, a simple variance analysis was carried out in which only fat and bone showed significant differences (P <0.05), which is given by the age of sacrifice; this confirms that the carcass yield is a function of live weight. It was reported that the regions that contributed most to the value of the canal, in terms of the values of the regional cuts, were: the leg, the shoulder and the ribs.

Novel study design to assess the utility of the copd assessment test in a primary care setting

The quality of a consultation provided by a physician can have a profound impact on the quality of care and patient engagement in treatment decisions. When the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) was developed, one of its aims was to aid the communication between physician and patient about the impact of COPD. We developed a novel study design to assess this in a primary care consultation. Primary care physicians across five countries in Europe conducted videoed consultations with six standardised COPD patients (played by trained actors) which had patient-specific issues that the physician needed to identify through questioning. Half the physicians saw the patients with the completed CAT, and half without. Independent assessors scored the physicians on their ability to identify and address the patient-specific issues, review standard COPD aspects, their understanding of the case and their overall performance. This novel study design presented many challenges which needed to be addressed to achieve an acceptable level of robustness to assess the utility of the CAT. This paper discusses these challenges and the measures adopted to eliminate or minimise their impact on the study results

This study analysed the validity and reliability of a new optoelectronic device (Velowin) for the measurement of vertical displacement and velocity as well as to estimate force and mechanical power. Eleven trained males with Mean (SD) age = 27.4 (4.8) years, completed an incremental squat exercise test with 5 different loads (<30 – 90% of their 1−repetition maximum) while displacement and vertical velocity of the barbell were simultaneously measured using an integrated 3D system (3D motion capture system + force platform) and Velowin. Substantial to almost perfect correlation (concordance correlation coefficient = 0.75 – 0.96), root mean square error as coefficient of variation ±90% confidence interval 10% and good to excellent intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.84 – 0.99 were determined for all the variables. Passing and Bablock regression methods revealed no differences for average velocity. However, significant but consistent bias were determined for average or peak force and power while systematic and not proportional bias was found for displacement. In conclusion, Velowin, holds some potential advantages over traditionally used accelerometer or linear transducers, represents a valid and reliable alternative to monitor vertical displacement and velocity as well as to estimate average force and mechanical power during the squat exercise

Compromising between European and US allergen immunotherapy schools: Discussions from GUIMIT, the Mexican immunotherapy guidelines

Background: Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) has a longstanding history and still remains the only disease-changing treatment for allergic rhinitis and asthma. Over the years 2 different schools have developed their strategies: the United States (US) and the European. Allergen extracts available in these regions are adapted to local practice. In other parts of the world, extracts from both regions and local ones are commercialized, as in Mexico. Here, local experts developed a national AIT guideline (GUIMIT 2019) searching for compromises between both schools. Methods: Using ADAPTE methodology for transculturizing guidelines and AGREE-II for evaluating guideline quality, GUIMIT selected 3 high-quality Main Reference Guidelines (MRGs): the European Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (EAACI) guideines, the S2k guideline of various German-speaking medical societies (2014), and the US Practice Parameters on Allergen Immunotherapy 2011. We formulated clinical questions and based responses on the fused evidence available in the MRGs, combined with local possibilities, patient's preference, and costs. We came across several issues on which the MRGs disagreed. These are presented here along with arguments of GUIMIT members to resolve them. GUIMIT (for a complete English version, see Supplementary data) concluded the following: Results: Related to the diagnosis of IgE-mediated respiratory allergy, apart from skin prick testing complementary tests (challenges, in vitro testing and molecular such as species-specific allergens) might be useful in selected cases to inform AIT composition. AIT is indicated in allergic rhinitis and suggested in allergic asthma (once controlled) and IgE-mediated atopic dermatitis. Concerning the correct subcutaneous AIT dose for compounding vials according to the US school: dosing tables and formula are given; up to 4 non-related allergens can be mixed, refraining from mixing high with low protease extracts. When using European extracts: the manufacturer's indications should be followed; in multi-allergic patients 2 simultaneous injections can be given (100% consensus); mixing is discouraged. In Mexico only allergoid tablets are available; based on doses used in all sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) publications referenced in MRGs, GUIMIT suggests a probable effective dose related to subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) might be: 50–200% of the monthly SCIT dose given daily, maximum mixing 4 allergens. Also, a table with practical suggestions on non-evidence-existing issues, developed with a simplified Delphi method, is added. Finally, dissemination and implementation of guidelines is briefly discussed, explaining how we used online tools for this in Mexico. Conclusions: Countries where European and American AIT extracts are available should adjust AIT according to which school is followed
