Congenital Fibrosis of the Extraocular Muscles
Congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles (CFEOM) is a rare disorder characterized by hereditary non-progressive restrictive
strabismus and blepharoptosis. Although most of the cases are bilateral and isolated, some patients may have systemic findings. CFEOM
is divided into three groups as CFEOM 1, 2, and 3 according to the phenotype. Primary responsible genes are KIF21A for CFEOM type
1 and 3 and PHOX2A/ARIX gene for CFEOM type 2. Studies suggest that abnormal innervation of the extraocular muscles is the cause
of muscle fibrosis. Early treatment is important because of the risk of amblyopia. Surgery is the primary treatment option for strabismus
and blepharoptosis. (Turk J Ophthalmol 2014; 44: 312-5
Tedavi edilen 8
hastada (%21,6) göz içi basınç artışı görüldü.
Sonuç:

dışında yan etki görülmemiştir
Investigation into the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on postnatal spine development and expression of synaptophysin and PSD95 in rat hippocampus
WOS: 000333002800014PubMed ID: 24365761Ethanol is known as a potent teratogen responsible for the fetal alcohol syndrome characterized by cognitive deficits especially pronounced in juveniles but ameliorating in adults. Since the mechanisms of these deficits and following partial recovery are not fully elucidated, the aim of the present study was to investigate the process of synaptogenesis in the hippocampus over the first two months of life in control and fetal-alcohol rats. Ethanol was delivered to the pregnant dams by intragastric intubation throughout 7-21 gestation days at the daily dose of 6 g/kg generating a mean blood alcohol level of 246.6 +/- 40.9 mg/dl on gestation day 20. The spine densities as well as the expression of pre- and postsynaptic proteins, synaptophysin (SYP) and PSD-95 protein, were evaluated for three distinct hippocampal regions: CA1, CA2+3, and DG and four postnatal days: PD1, PD10, PD30 and PD60, independently. Our results confirmed an intensive synaptogenesis within the brain spurt period (first 10 postnatal days), however, the temporal pattern of changes in the SYP and PSD-95 expression was different. The ethanol exposure during half of the 1st and the whole 2nd human trimester equivalent resulted in an overall trend toward lower values of synaptic indices at PD1 with a fast recovery from these deficits observed already at PD10. At PD30, around the age when the most pronounced behavioral deficits have been previously reported in juvenile fetal-alcohol subjects, no significant changes were found in either the hippocampal levels of synaptic proteins or in the spine density in principal hippocampal neurons. Posterior Capsular Opacification in Preschool- and School-Age Patients after Pediatric Cataract Surgery without Posterior Capsulotomy
Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the development of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) in preschool- and school-age children with cataract who underwent cataract surgery without posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy.
Materials and Methods: The records of 30 eyes of 21 patients who underwent pediatric cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation were retrospectively reviewed. Patients’ age, PCO status and duration, need for neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Nd:YAG) laser treatment based on coverage of visual axis, and follow-up period were recorded.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 7.6±2.83 (4-12) years. Unilateral cataract surgery and IOL implantation were performed in 12 patients (57.14%) and bilateral cataract surgery and IOL implantation were performed in nine patients (42.86%). Average follow-up time was 17.7±22.67 (3-83) months. PCO developed in 21 eyes (70%) and covered the visual axis in 15 eyes (50%), which therefore required Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy. The mean duration of postoperative PCO development was 8.91±18.7 months (1 week-71 months).
Conclusion: We believe that with adequately experienced surgeons, performing both cataract surgery and posterior capsulotomy with anterior vitrectomy in the same session is appropriate for selected preschool- and school-age children with cataract
Evaluation of Central Corneal Thickness with Ultrasound Pachymetry After Micro-Coaxial Cataract Surgery
Pur po se: To evaluate the changes in central corneal thickness (CCT) in patients with different values before cataract surgery.
Ma te ri al and Met hod: 90 eyes of 70 patients who had undergone uneventful cataract surgery because of senile cataract were
included in this prospective study. The CCT was measured by ultrasound pachymetry. The patients were evaluated in 4 groups
according to preoperative CCT values (group 1: 450-500 μm, group 2: 501-550μm, group 3: 551-600μm, and group 4: 601-650μm).
The CCT was measured preoperatively and at 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 8th weeks postoperatively. The chi-square test and one-way analysis of
variance test were used for statistical analysis.
Re sults: The increase in CCT was highest in group 1 determined as 71.3 μm. The increase in group 2 was 43.4, 35.1 in group 3, and 16.6
μm in group 4. The increase in CCT was significant in all groups at week 1 ( p<0.05). The increase in group 1 was statistically significant
than in groups 3 and 4 (group 1 and group 3, p=0.025; group 1 and group 4, p<0.01). The increase in group 2 was also statistically
significant than in group 4 (p=0.032). The CCT was decreased after the 2nd week. The recovery of CCT to preoperative values was determined
at 8th week in group 1, 4th week in groups 2 and 3, and 2nd week in group 4.
Dis cus si on: In thin corneas, the increase in central corneal thickness is more prominent and stabilization occurs in a longer time after
cataract surgery. (Turk J Ophthalmol 2013; 43: 145-8
Ubrzano izlaganje polipropilenskih kompozita ojačanih pregrijanim drvom vremenskim utjecajima i otpornost na propadanje
The aim of this study was to determine the accelerated weathering and decay resistance of the heattreated wood reinforced polypropylene composites (HT-WPC). Polypropylene (PP) was used as a matrix and the heat-treated wood treated at 180 °C and 220 °C as reinforcement fi ller. The effect of three fi ller type, such as 40, 60 and 100 mesh, on the outdoor performance of composites was also investigated. The composites were prepared with twin screw extruder, and the test samples were obtained with compression molding. Lightness index (L*), color changes (ΔE*) and physical changes on the surface of the composites after the accelerated weathering, and
decay resistance of the composites were investigated. According to the results, the effects of heat-treated wood on color changes were found to be more than its fi ller size, and while the fi ller loadings were increased from 5 % to 20 %, it was determined to increase the color changes of the composites. In scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, crack formation and deterioration on the surface of the composites were determined. In FTIR spectra, no difference was determined between the composites, and all peaks were similar to each one. The addition of heattreated wood improved the antifungal effi ciency of the composite, and the mass losses decreased with the increasing of heat treatment temperature. As a result, adding heat-treated wood to PP was found to improve the outdoor performance of the HT-WPCs
