This study aims to investigate the effects of proverb-based financial education on 4th-grade students' financial literacy and perceptions of their wants and needs. At this juncture, the research was conducted using a quasi-experimental design. The study group consists of 82 students attending a primary school located in the northwest of Turkey. We collected the data for the study using financial literacy, want and need perception scales. We utilized the dependent and independent groups t-test to analyze the obtained data. We determined a statistically significant difference between the experimental group that received financial education based on proverbs and the control group that did not. This difference favored the experimental group that received proverb-based financial literacy education. In addition, when the experimental group's pre-test and post-test mean scores were compared, we found a significant difference in favor of the post-test. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of financial education based on proverbs as applied to the experimental group. Article visualizations

Aim: To evaluate choroidal thickness (CT) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in subjects with type A behavior pattern (TABP). Material and Method: Thirtyeight eyes of 38 healthy controls and 38 eyes of 38 patients with TABP were enrolled. Each subject underwent a complete ophthalmic examination before SD-OCT images were obtained. Choroidal thicknesses were measured manually at the central of fovea (subfoveal) and 500 µm intervals up to 1500 µm temporal (T1, T2, T3) and nasal (N1, N2, N3) to the fovea with Enhanced Depth Imaging (EDI ) mode. GCC thickness was evaluated automatically as the minimum and the average thicknesses. Parameters were compared between the groups. Results: The mean ages were 38.7±13.8 years in TABP group, and 40.3±11.5 years in control group. There were no significant differences in mean age, gender distribution, intraocular pressure and spherical equivalent between the groups (p>0.05). The mean (±SD) CT for each of the 7 points (subfoveal, N1, N2, N3, T1, T2, T3) in TABP group were 325.4±45.1, 301.3±39.4, 284.6±35.2, 269.5±41.9, 293.2±40.7, 274.5±43.8, 260.5±44.3 µm, respectively. CT values in control group were 322.9±27.9, 301.8±33.2, 288.5±35.0, 278.1±33.4, 297.2±31.5, 285.1±33.0, 271.4±39.5 µm, respectively. There was no significant differences in CT for all 7 points between the groups (p>0,05). The mean and minimum GCC thicknesses in TABP group were 82.2±5.3 µm and 79.0±6.4 µm, respectively. Corresponding values in control group were 86.3±7.2 µm and 83.5±6.0 µm, respectively. There were significant differences in mean and minimum GCC thicknesses between the groups (p>0,05). Discussion: Although no detectable difference between the groups in terms of CT, the mean and minimum GCC thickness values of TABP patients were statistically lower than control group. TABP may be accompanied with a decrease of ganglion cell thickness

The impacts of three timber harvesting techniques (manpower, skidder, and skyline) on residual trees, seedlings, and timber products were investigated in natural oriental spruce stands in Artvin, Turkey. Each of timber harvesting techniques was used in 5 different harvesting sites. The degree of damage caused by timber harvesting techniques in the residual trees, seedlings and timber products was calculated as based on injuring size. The results showed that timber harvesting techniques resulted in damages to residual trees, seedlings, and timber products, but the degree of damages caused by the harvesting techniques was significantly different. The highest level of damage was caused by manpower, followed by skidder and skyline harvesting technique. These results suggest that the damages caused by logging can be minimized by using proper timber harvesting techniques

Introduction: The choroid is involved in the pathogenesis of various retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The ocular pulse amplitude (OPA) gives useful information about intraocular blood flow and is an indirect indicator of choroidal perfusion. In this study, we aimed to assess the correlation between the OPA and choroidal thickness (CT) in the eyes of healthy individuals and of individuals with non-exudative early stage AMD. Materials and Method: Fourty-four eyes of 44 non-exudative AMD patients and 41 age-matched eyes of 41 healthy individuals were included in the study. All eyes underwent a detailed ophthalmic evaluation, including axial length (AL) and ocular pulse amplitude (OPA) measurements. The CT was measured using optical coherence tomography. Parameters were compared between the two groups and correlation between OPA and CT was assessed. Results: The mean subfoveal, foveal, and parafoveal CT were 245.82 +/- 24.29 mu m, 230.66 +/- 23.44 mu m, 219.55 +/- 25.39 mu m in AMD group, respectively. The corresponding values were 278.44 +/- 34.18 mu m, 263.76 +/- 32.45 mu m, and 253.79 +/- 34.81 mu m in control group, respectively. The mean ages of groups were 69.6 +/- 8.97 years, and 65.0 +/- 5.89 years, respectively. The mean OPA was 3.43 +/- 1.14mmHg and 3.49 +/- 1.12mmHg, respectively. The average CT in AMD patients were significantly lower than the control group in all three regions (subfoveal- foveal- parafoveal) (all p<0,001). In controls, there was a moderate positive correlation between the OPA and CT in the three segments (p=0.002, 0.009, and 0.003; respectively). However only the foveal CT showed significant positive correlation with the OPA in AMD group (p=0.047). Conclusion: Our results showed a considerable correlation between ocular pulse amplitude and choroidal thickness in healthy subject. In non-exudative AMD group, there was a weak correlation between them. It can be hypothesized that; in patients with AMD, degeneration and/or thinning of choroidal pattern is a reason for this result

Get PDF
Objective: To determine the characteristic features of the rare hemoglobin (Hb) variant Hb Yaizu to enable laboratory diagnosis of the hemoglobin variants during screening programs. Materials and Methods: Genomic DNA was obtained from the 4 members of a family living in Denizli province, an Aegean region of Turkey. Blood cell counts, hemoglobin composition, hemoglobin electrophoresis (both alkaline and acid), HPLC analysis, DNA sequencing and beta globin gene cluster haplotypes were done. Results: Hb Yaizu carriers were apparently healthy individuals. Hb Yaizu was slightly faster than Hb S at alkaline pH, but slower than Hb S at acidic pH in hemoglobin electrophoresis. An abnormal hemoglobin peak was observed with a retention time of 4.77 min in HPLC analysis attributed to Hb Yaizu. Two members of the family were heterozygous Hb Yaizu [beta 79(EF3) Asp>Asn] confirmed by DNA sequencing. The mutation was found to be linked with the Mediterranean haplotype I [+ - - ++]. Conclusion: We have presented the details of Hb Yaizu, a rare hemoglobin variant that may be important to hemoglobinopathy screening programs, although its clinical significance is unclear. Post-traumatic stress disorder after terrorist attack in healthcare professionals

Get PDF
INTRODUCTION: On the date of 15 July 2016 a terrorist organization launched a terrorist attack using helicopters and heavy combat weapons in the city centers of Istanbul and Ankara simultaneously. Numerous civilian were hurt and many of them lost their lives during the attacks. Terrorism is a form of combat designed to cause the highest psychological influence on the masses. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most common psychological disorders after such disasters. The aim of this study is to determine the associated risk factors and PTSD rates in healthcare professionals who were on call during the 15 July 2016 terrorist attacks. METHOD: Since the hospital is in a neighbouring the street to where terror attacks occurred, all healthcare professionals ≥ 18 years of age who were on duty that night in the Dr. Ridvan Ege Training and Research Hospital and were auditory or visual witnesses of the event were included in the study as the first group while healthcare professionals who work in the same hospital but were not on duty that night were included as the control group. RESULTS: The mean post-traumatic diagnostic scale stress score of the control group was 11.87. The mean post-traumatic diagnostic scale stress score of the Group 1 was 21.91. There was a significant difference between the groups in terms of posttraumatic diagnostic scale stress score (p < 0.05). While the healthcare professionals on duty on July 15, 2016 (Group 1) had moderate-severe (21.91 ± 5.11) stress disorder, the healthcare professionals who were not at the hospital on July 15, 2016 (Control Group) had moderate stress disorder (11.87 ± 6.86). CONCLUSION: Our country is at risk from the fact that such attacks may be experienced again because of its unique conditions. The results of our work support the data on the high level of exposure to PTSD when exposed to a terrorist attack. For this reason, the identification of the characteristics of pre-traumatic health individuals at risk is useful in planning the presentation of preventive and curative health services. At the same time, there is a need for longer-term work and wider samples to reveal the psychological consequences of such attacks

Türkiye’de gözlenen ilk Hb Tunis [beta124(H2)Pro>Ser] olgusu

Hb Tunis [beta124(H2)Pro>Ser] was reported from Tunisia in 1988. This hemoglobin variant was detected by isoelectric focusing moving just ahead of Hb A. It cannot be identified by standard hemoglobin electrophoresis due to its similar mobility to Hb A. It has normal stability and oxygen affinity and does not produce any clinical symptoms. Here, we report a heterozygous Hb Tunis [beta124(H2)Pro>Ser] case discovered for the first time in Turkey in a premarital screening program. This hemoglobin variant can be identified with high performance liquid chromatography analysis confirmed with DNA sequencing. We emphasize in our study the importance of an interdisciplinary collaborative study at the provincial basis for the success of the hemoglobinopathy control program
