    Adaptive Bayesian Iterative Transmission Reconstruction for Attenuation Correction in Myocardial Perfusion Imaging with SPECT/Slow-Rotation Low-Output CT Systems

    Objectives. SPECT/slow-rotation low-output CT systems can produce streak artifacts in filtered backprojection (FBP) attenuation maps, impacting attenuation correction (AC) in myocardial perfusion imaging. This paper presents an adaptive Bayesian iterative transmission reconstruction (ABITR) algorithm for more accurate AC. Methods. In each iteration, ABITR calculated a three-dimensional prior containing the pixels with attenuation coefficients similar to water, then used it to encourage these pixels to the water value. ABITR was tested with a cardiac phantom and 4 normal patients acquired by a GE Millennium VG/Hawkeye system. Results. FBP AC and ABITR AC produced similar phantom results. For the patients, streak artifacts were observed in the FBP and ordered-subsets expectation-maximization (OSEM) maps but not in the ABITR maps, and ABITR AC produced more uniform images than FBP AC and OSEM AC. Conclusion. ABITR can improve the quality of the attenuation map, producing more uniform images for normal studies

    QCD and SUSY-QCD corrections to the Three-Body Decay of the Charged Higgs Boson

    The O(αs){\cal O}(\alpha_s) QCD corrections to the three-body decay width of the charged Higgs Γ\Gamma(H+W+bbˉH^+\to W^+b\bar{b}) are discussed in the MSSM model. Our calculations indicate that the standard QCD corrections to the three-body decay mode raise the width by about 12% and the supersymmetric QCD corrections(due to g~,t~,b~\tilde{g}, \tilde{t}, \tilde{b} exchanges) can be comparable to or even larger than the standard QCD corrctions in some regions of the supersymmetric parameter space. This is mainly due to the effect of large left-right mixing of stop(t~\tilde{t}). It could significantly affect the phenomenology of the H+H^+ search.Comment: 14 pages, 14figure

    Spectroscopic ellipsometry study of Cu2ZnSnS4 bulk poly-crystals

    The linear optical properties of Cu2ZnSnS4 bulk poly-crystals have been investigated using spectroscopic ellipsometry in the range of 1.2-4.6 eV at room temperature. The characteristic features identified in the optical spectra are explained by using the Adachi analytical model for the interband transitions at the corresponding critical points in the Brillouin zone. The experimental data have been modeled over the entire spectral range taking into account the lowest E0 transition near the fundamental absorption edge and E1A and E1B higher energy interband transitions. In addition, the spectral dependences of the refractive index, extinction coefficient, absorption coefficient, and normal-incidence reflectivity values have been accurately determined and are provided since they are essential data for the design of Cu2ZnSnS4 based optoelectronic devices

    Iodofiltic Acid I 123 (BMIPP) Fatty Acid Imaging Improves Initial Diagnosis in Emergency Department Patients With Suspected Acute Coronary Syndromes A Multicenter Trial

    ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to assess the performance of β-methyl-p-[123I]-iodophenyl-pentadecanoic acid (BMIPP) single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to detect acute coronary syndromes (ACS) in emergency department patients with chest pain.BackgroundEmergency department diagnosis of chest pain is problematic, often requiring prolonged observation and stress testing. BMIPP SPECT detects abnormalities in fatty acid metabolism resulting from myocardial ischemia, even many hours after symptom cessation.MethodsEmergency department patients with suspected ACS were enrolled at 50 centers. Patients received 5 mCi BMIPP within 30 h of symptom cessation. BMIPP SPECT images were interpreted semiquantitatively by 3 blinded readers. Initial clinical diagnosis was based on symptoms, initial electrocardiograms, and troponin, whereas the final diagnosis was based on all available data (including angiography and stress SPECT) but not BMIPP SPECT. Final diagnoses were adjudicated by a blinded committee as ACS, intermediate likelihood of ACS, or negative for ACS.ResultsA total of 507 patients were studied and efficacy was evaluated in 448 patients with sufficient data. The sensitivity of BMIPP by 3 blinded readers for a final diagnosis of ACS and intermediate likelihood of ACS was 71% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 64% to 79%), 74% (95% CI: 68% to 81%), and 69% (95% CI: 62% to 77%); the corresponding specificity of BMIPP was 67% (95% CI: 61% to 73%), 54% (95% CI: 48% to 60%), and 70% (95% CI: 64% to 76%). Compared with the initial diagnosis alone, BMIPP + initial diagnosis increased sensitivity from 43% to 81% (p < 0.001), negative predictive value from 62% to 83% (p < 0.001), and positive predictive value from 41% to 58% (p < 0.001), whereas specificity was unchanged (61% to 62%, p = NS).ConclusionsThe addition of BMIPP data to the initially available clinical information adds incremental value toward the early diagnosis of an ACS, potentially allowing determination of the presence or absence of ACS to be made earlier in the evaluation process.     The Effect of a Mediterranean Diet on the Incidence of Cataract Surgery

    Background: Cataract is a leading cause of vision impairment worldwide, and surgery is the only available treatment. The process that initiates lens opacification is dependent on the oxidative stress experienced by the lens components. A healthy overall dietary pattern, with the potential to reduce oxidative stress, has been suggested as a means to decrease the risk of developing cataract. We aimed to investigate the hypothesis that an intervention with a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) rather than a low-fat diet could decrease the incidence of cataract surgery in elderly subjects. Methods: We included 5802 men and women (age range: 55–80 years) from the Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea study (multicenter, parallel-group, randomized controlled clinical trial) who had not undergone cataract surgery. They were randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups: (1) a MedDiet enriched with extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) (n = 1998); (2) a MedDiet enriched with nuts (n = 1914), and a control group recommended to follow a low-fat diet (n = 1890). The incidence of cataract surgery was recorded yearly during follow-up clinical evaluations. Primary analyses were performed on an intention-to-treat basis. Cox regression analyses were used to assess the relationship between the nutritional intervention and the incidence of cataract surgery. Results: During a follow-up period of 7.0 years (mean follow-up period: 5.7 years; median: 5.9 years), 559 subjects underwent cataract surgery. Two hundred and six participants from the MedDiet + EVOO group, 174 from the MedDiet + Nuts group, and 179 from the control group underwent cataract surgery. We did not observe a reduction in the incidence of cataract surgery in the MedDiet groups compared to the control group. The multivariable adjusted hazard ratios were 1.03 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.84–1.26, p = 0.79) for the control group versus the MedDiet + EVOO group and 1.06 (95% CI: 0.86–1.31, p = 0.58) for the control group versus the MedDiet + Nuts group. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first large randomized trial assessing the role of a MedDiet on the incidence of cataract surgery. Our results showed that the incidence of cataract surgery was similar in the MedDiet with EVOO, MedDiet with nuts, and low-fat diet groups. Further studies are necessary to investigate whether a MedDiet could have a preventive role in cataract surgery

    Analysis of the Ush2a Gene in Medaka Fish (Oryzias latipes)

    Patients suffering from Usher syndrome (USH) exhibit sensorineural hearing loss, retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and, in some cases, vestibular dysfunction. USH is the most common genetic disorder affecting hearing and vision and is included in a group of hereditary pathologies associated with defects in ciliary function known as ciliopathies. This syndrome is clinically classified into three types: USH1, USH2 and USH3. USH2 accounts for well over one-half of all Usher cases and mutations in the USH2A gene are responsible for the majority of USH2 cases, but also for atypical Usher syndrome and recessive non-syndromic RP. Because medaka fish (Oryzias latypes) is an attractive model organism for genetic-based studies in biomedical research, we investigated the expression and function of the USH2A ortholog in this teleost species. Ol-Ush2a encodes a protein of 5.445 aa codons, containing the same motif arrangement as the human USH2A. Ol-Ush2a is expressed during early stages of medaka fish development and persists into adulthood. Temporal Ol-Ush2a expression analysis using whole mount in situ hybridization (WMISH) on embryos at different embryonic stages showed restricted expression to otoliths and retina, suggesting that Ol-Ush2a might play a conserved role in the development and/or maintenance of retinal photoreceptors and cochlear hair cells. Knockdown of Ol-Ush2a in medaka fish caused embryonic developmental defects (small eyes and heads, otolith malformations and shortened bodies with curved tails) resulting in late embryo lethality. These embryonic defects, observed in our study and in other ciliary disorders, are associated with defective cell movement specifically implicated in left-right (LR) axis determination and planar cell polarity (PCP)
