Harvey Fierstein: A prophetic voice in the gay community

Harvey Forbes Fierstein has become an important influence in the gay community. His first major play, Torch Song Trilogy, was a major milestone for gay theatre. By becoming the first gay play to be commercially successful, it launched Fierstein into the spotlight. Since his first major Broadway play, he has continued to be active as playwright, actor, and gay rights activist; This paper places two of Fierstein\u27s major plays within the context of gay liberation history and gay theatre history. By analyzing the importance and theme of both Torch Song Trilogy and Safe Sex, it is argued that Fierstein is clearly an influential voice in the gay community; An outline of major events in the gay liberation movement and gay theatre history is included to assist in placing the plays within the appropriate context

Managing Reputation, Sustainability, and Self Interest: The Case of CEO Remuneration in the United States and the Importance of Being Earnest

Executive compensation has long been a lightning rod of interest in the popular press and frequently makes the headlines . It seems that everyone has an opinion on the subject, with most demanding an end to inflated compensation packages . Depending on whether you are a member of the C suite or not will likely skew your opinion on the matter. Given that the CEO is the most visible manifestation of the company to the outside world it is common to fixate on the way in which they are being compensated. However, after all of the research that has been conducted, we are still not sure about what factors determine a business executives’ pay. The present study seeks to add to the extant literature on the subject of CE O compensation by introducing a couple of promising new variables: corporate reputation and sustainability. It is argued that since the CEO is the face of the organization that he/she will be compensated based on how well they manage the firm’s reputation overall and its “environmental footprint” in particular

[Verse 1]The day is ending, you’re smiling thruTomorrow’s sending a struggle new;The burden’s heavy, but if you bear,We’ll find a haven, our love to share. [Verse 2]The years we’ve waited, we’ll soon forget,Our hearts were mated since first we met;The trail to Loveland, soon dear, we’ll find,All care and sorrow we’ll leave behind. [Refrain]Out where the sun bids the day a fond good-bye,Our where the fields meet the crimson of the sky,Out where all sorrow surrenders,Out where the blue begins,Dreams we once knew will return, and come trueLove that is strong must abide.Blest in a nest in the West well find rest.West of the Great Divide-vide

Distinguishing the “Truly National” From the “Truly Local”: Customary Allocation, Commercial Activity, and Collective Action

This Essay makes two claims about different methods of defining the expanse and limits of the Commerce Clause. My first claim is that approaches that privilege traditional subjects of state regulation are unworkable and undesirable. These approaches are unworkable in light of the frequency with which the federal government and the states regulate the same subject matter in our world of largely overlapping federal and state legislative jurisdiction. The approaches are undesirable because the question of customary allocation is unrelated to the principal reason why Congress possesses the power to regulate interstate commerce: solving collective action problems involving multiple states. These problems are evident in the way that some federal judges invoked regulatory custom in litigation over the constitutionality of the minimum coverage provision in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The areas of health insurance and health care are not of exclusive state concern, and it is impossible to lose—or to win—a competition requiring skillful lawyers or judges to describe them as more state than federal, or more federal than state. Nor is it most important what the answer is. More promising are the approaches that view congressional authority as turning on either commercial activity or collective action problems facing the states. My second claim is that these two approaches have advantages and disadvantages, and that the choice between them exemplifies the more general tension between applying rules and applying their background justifications. I have previously defended a collective action approach to Article I, Section 8. My primary purpose in this Essay is to clarify the jurisprudential stakes in adopting one method or the other and to identify the problems that advocates of each approach must address

    A Mad Stone

Here and there is found a man possessing a pebble for which he claims the remarkable power of preventing hydrophobia when applied to the wound made by a mad dog. We have been unable to find any record of a scientific examination of a mad stone or a scientific test of its properties. This may be partly accounted for by the rarity of the stone, and the high esteem in which they are held by their owners. A popular idea is that they are formed by accretion in a deer\u27s stomach

Neutrino Masses in Supersymmetry: R-Parity and Leptogenesis

    Get PDF
In the supersymmetric standard model of particle interactions, R-parity nonconservation is often invoked to obtain nonzero neutrino masses. We point out here that such interactions of the supersymmetric particles would erase any pre-existing lepton or baryon asymmetry of the universe before the electroweak phase transition through the B+LB + L violating sphaleron processes. We then show how neutrino masses may be obtained in supersymmetry (assuming R-parity conservation) together with successful leptogenesis and predict the possible existence of new observable particles.Comment: LATEX, 12 page
