The integer factorisation problem (FACT) is a well-known number-theoreticproblem, with many applications in areas such as cryptography. An instanceof a FACT problem (a number n such that n = p × q) can be reduced to aninstance of the conjunctive normal form boolean satisfiability problem (CNF-SAT), a well-known NP-complete problem. Some applications of this is toutilize advances in SAT solving for solving FACT, and for creating difficultCNF-SAT instances. This report compares four different reductions from FACT to CNF-SAT,based on the full adder, array multiplier and Wallace tree multiplier circuits. The comparisons were done by reducing a set of FACT instances to CNF-SATinstances with the different reductions. The resulting CNF-SAT instanceswere then compared with respect to the number of clauses and variables, aswell as the time taken to solve the instances with the SAT solver MiniSat
Sharing Responsibility? Short- and Long-term Effects of Sweden's "Daddy-Month" Reform
In 1995, the Swedish government reformed the parental leave system with the view to increase the share of fathers in child care, change gender roles in society, and improve the chances of mothers in the labor market. We investigate a unique data set comprising the entire population of Swedish children born in a span of two weeks before and two weeks after the reform. The reform constitutes a natural experiment. Comparing two cohorts of a total of 7600 newborns, their mothers, and fathers over a period of eight years, we look at a) the number of days mothers and fathers take parental leave and b) the number of days for care of sick children. We find that the reform had a strong short-term effect on parental leave by fathers, but that there are no long-run effects on fathers' willingness to increase their part in care for sick children.Gender; Labor market; Natural Experiment; Policy Evaluations
Full-Potential LMTO: Total Energy and Force Calculations
The essential features of a full potential electronic structure method using
Linear Muffin-Tin Orbitals (LMTOs) are presented. The electron density and
potential in the this method are represented with no inherent geometrical
approximation. This method allows the calculation of total energies and forces
with arbitrary accuracy while sacrificing much of the efficiency and physical
content of approximate methods such as the LMTO-ASA method.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures, Workshop on the TB-LMTO method, Monastery of

Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) typing of Salmonella Senftenberg in animal feed production.
Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) was studied as genotyping method typing for a strain collection of Salmonella, belonging to the serotype Senftenberg. This collection consisted of 48 strains/isolates that were sampled in Sweden during 1995-96. In this study the aim was evaluate the usefulness of RAPD in terms of discriminatory power, reproducibility and typeability to compare it with other genotyping methods. By using Taq and Tth DNA polymerase in separate reactions the ability to increase discriminatory power and reproducibility was studied. When Tth DNA polymerase was used in the RAPD reaction brighter bands were obtained and the reproducibility was increased. The results suggest that RAPD can be used for rapid screening of a strain material and in combination with other more discriminating genotyping methods to more truly reflect the genetic diversity
Temporal Trends in Migration in the Åland Islands: Effects of Population Size and Geographic Distance
This is the published version. Copyright 1994 Wayne State University Press.Using a model developed by Relethford (1992), we assess temporal trends (1750-1949) in marital migration in the Aland Islands, Finland, in relation to both geographic distance and population size. The 200-year time period was divided into four 50-year periods. For all time periods both geographic distance and population size are important determinants of migration among 15 Lutheran parishes. The geographic distance parameter of the model decreases significantly over time, and the population size parameter fluctuates slightly but shows no significant change over time. For all time periods migration is negative density dependent, indicating that there is greater relative flow from larger to smaller subdivisions. Even though both the geographic distance and population size parameters are statistically significant, the analysis suggests that geographic distance has a greater relative effect on migration than population size. There is a clear indication of isolate breakdown during the last two time periods (1850-1899 and 1900-1949). Residual analysis indicated that the smallest parish (Sottunga) was a major outlier that showed greater exogamy (less endemicity) than expected from the model
Tunable singlet-triplet splitting in a few-electron Si/SiGe quantum dot
We measure the excited-state spectrum of a Si/SiGe quantum dot as a function
of in-plane magnetic field, and we identify the spin of the lowest three
eigenstates in an effective two-electron regime. The singlet-triplet splitting
is an essential parameter describing spin qubits, and we extract this splitting
from the data. We find it to be tunable by lateral displacement of the dot,
which is realized by changing two gate voltages on opposite sides of the
device. We present calculations showing the data are consistent with a spectrum
in which the first excited state of the dot is a valley-orbit state.Comment: 4 pages with 3 figure
