Acceleration by Strong Interactions
Beyond the attractive strong potential needed for hadronic bound states,
strong interactions are predicted to provide repulsive forces depending on the
color charges involved. The repulsive interactions could in principle serve for
particle acceleration with highest gradients in the order of GeV/fm. Indirect
evidence for repulsive interactions have been reported in the context of heavy
meson production at colliders. In this contribution, we sketch a thought
experiment to directly investigate repulsive strong interactions. For this we
prepare two quarks using two simultaneous deep inelastic scattering processes
off an iron target. We discuss the principle setup of the experiment and
estimate the number of electrons on target required to observe a repulsive
effect between the quarks.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
Permeability process of poly(alkyl cyanoacrylate) nanocapsules
The objective of this work was to synthesize poly(alkyl cyanoacrylate) nanocapsules using surface polymerisation. During synthesis, different parameters such as the relative monomer composition of both monomers n-butyl cyanoacrylate and propargyl cyanoacrylate as well as the type and amount of surfactant (sodium-1-dodecane sulfonate, dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC)) were adjusted.
The DTAC-stabilized capsule membrane, which consists of 50 mol% of each monomer, was characterized in its permeability via PFG-NMR. The size of the capsules was determined using particle tracking. Polyethylene glycols with a molar mass ranging from 600 g/mol to 15000 g/mol were used as tracer molecules for the PFG-NMR measurements. Furthermore, some other, mostly organic tracers in a range of between 18 g/mol and 200 g/mol, e.g. different alcohols, diols or organic phosphor compounds, were used to analyze the membrane with regard to its permeability in respect to the different molecules and their varying sizes and polarities.
It was shown that the membrane is less permeable for bigger polyethylene glycols than for smaller molecules of this class. Using the different organic tracer molecules, it was furthermore established that a correlation exists between the effective permeability for the molecules and their Hansen’s hydrogen bonding parameter. The higher this parameter of a molecule, the slower it permeates through the capsule membrane.
Over the course of the experiment, the membranes of the capsules were modified using chemical crosslinking. An increasing degree of crosslinking leads to an extensive reduction in the effective permeability. Likewise, the use of a positively charged azide to modify the capsule membrane via click reactions again leads to the expected reduction of the effective permeability
Machine Learning meets Data-Driven Journalism: Boosting International Understanding and Transparency in News Coverage
Migration crisis, climate change or tax havens: Global challenges need global
solutions. But agreeing on a joint approach is difficult without a common
ground for discussion. Public spheres are highly segmented because news are
mainly produced and received on a national level. Gain- ing a global view on
international debates about important issues is hindered by the enormous
quantity of news and by language barriers. Media analysis usually focuses only
on qualitative re- search. In this position statement, we argue that it is
imperative to pool methods from machine learning, journalism studies and
statistics to help bridging the segmented data of the international public
sphere, using the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) as a
case study.Comment: presented at 2016 ICML Workshop on #Data4Good: Machine Learning in

Diktatur in Afrika
DeNovoGUI: an open source graphical user interface for de novo sequencing of tandem mass spectra
De novo sequencing is a popular technique in proteomics for identifying peptides from tandem mass spectra without having to rely on a protein sequence database. Despite the strong potential of de novo sequencing algorithms, their adoption threshold remains quite high. We here present a user-friendly and lightweight graphical user interface called DeNovoGUI for running parallelized versions of the freely available de novo sequencing software PepNovo+, greatly simplifying the use of de novo sequencing in proteomics. Our platform-independent software is freely available under the permissible Apache2 open source license. Atomically resolved TEM imaging of covalently functionalised graphene
Covalent functionalisation can be a powerful lever to tune the properties and processability of graphene. After overcoming the low chemical reactivity of graphene, covalent functionalisation led to the generation of new hybrid materials, applicable in a broad variation of fields. Although the process of functionalising graphene is nowadays firmly established, fundamental aspects of the produced hybrid materials remain to be clarified. Especially the atomically resolved imaging is only scarcely explored. Here we show aberration corrected in situ high resolution TEM imaging of dodecyl functionalised monolayer graphene at atomic resolution after an effective mechanical filtering approach. The mechanical filtering allows to separate adsorbed contamination from the covalently bound functional molecules and thus opens the possibility for the observation of this hybrid material. The obtained data is validated by DFT calculations and by a novel image simulation approach based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at room temperature
