    Quantum Langevin theory of excess noise

    In an earlier work [P. J. Bardroff and S. Stenholm], we have derived a fully quantum mechanical description of excess noise in strongly damped lasers. This theory is used here to derive the corresponding quantum Langevin equations. Taking the semi-classical limit of these we are able to regain the starting point of Siegman's treatment of excess noise [Phys. Rev. A 39, 1253 (1989)].     Epidemiological aspects of surgical site infections in an income country. The case of regional hospital center, Borgou (Benin)

    ABSTRACT Background: Surgical site infection is frustrating for the care team and depressing for the patient. Objective: To determine the epidemiological aspects of surgical site infections in regional hospital, Borgou. Methods: The study was crossed with prospective data collection. Recruitment was done for six months (from February 2013 to July 2013), each patient operated in both surgical services (general surgery and maternity) consents to be followed for one month or year. The surgical site infection was defined according to the CDC/NHSN 2009. Results: The frequency of surgical site infections was 7.3% (44/603). The mean age was 30.7 ± 15.8 years with minimum and maximum of 5 months and 70 years, respectively. They were significantly (p<0.05) more common in general surgery than that of maternity and visceral surgery and obstetrics were more concerned (14/44 each); the median time to SSI onset was 7.8 ± 3.8 days. The deep incisional infection was the most frequent (34/44). The most encountered organism was Escherichia coli (64.7%); multidrug resistance was 41.2%. The healing time averaged 30.5 ± 13.8 days with minimum and maximum of 20 and 92 days.     Madurez fisiológica de la semilla de tomate de árbol (Cyphomandra betacea Sendt).

    Para determinar la madurez del tomate de árbol se marcó un número suficiente de frutos en el huerto colección de la Estación Experimental La Selva del ICA, en el municipio de Rionegro. Las muestras correspondieron a 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 semanas después de la antesis floral. La semilla se extrajo por el sistema de fermentación en envase de vidrio por 48 horas. Los parámetros usados para determinar la madurez fisiológica, fueron el peso seco de 100 semillas, el porcentaje de germinación, el vigor de germinación, y el peso seco de las plantulas a los 51 días de iniciada la prueba de germinación. Se concluye que la máxima germinación se obtiene con semillas de frutos que han alcanzado su completa maduración a las 21-22 semanas de edad. La semilla de esta especie acumula materia seca hasta la maduración completa del fruto. El vigor de germinación es máximo cuando la semilla procede de frutos maduros. Los factores peso seco de la semilla, porcentaje de germinación y vigor de germinación presentan alta correlación positiva.     Expression of the transcriptional regulator Egr-1 in experimental glomerulonephritis: Requirement for mesangial cell proliferation. The early growth response gene-1 (Egr-1), a zinc finger transcriptional regulator, was induced in a rat model of mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis (GN). Northern blot analysis revealed a maximal 14.9-fold increase in glomerular Egr-1 mRNA at day 6 of GN. By immunohistochemistry Egr-1 protein expression was demonstrated to be mainly confined to glomerular mesangial cells (MC). To test whether Egr-1 directly regulates MC proliferation, cultured MCs were stimulated with platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) after preincubation with different Egr-1 antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs). PDGF-induced Egr-1 mRNA levels were inhibited by up to 75% and protein levels by up to 91%. In addition Egr-1-specific ASOs blocked PDGF-induced rise in 3H-thymidine uptake by 83% and almost completely abrogated increase in MC number. We conclude that Egr-1 induction is of critical importance for PDGF-induced mitogenic signaling in MCs, and inhibition of Egr-1 in vivo may offer an approach to oppose glomerular MC proliferation in glomerular inflammatory disease

    Decolonizing Cross-Cultural Research: a Case for National Heterogeneity and the Configured Culture Framework

    Scholars have noted that national culture is heterogeneous (i.e., composed of multiple subcultures) and changes over time. Yet, a system that captures and represents the heterogeneity and change in culture has not been advanced in literature. Attempts have been made to demonstrate the occasion of these important aspects of culture, but none offered a way to capture them in research reporting. Currently, researchers report culture values or cultural dimensions in terms of national scores inadvertently reducing national cultures to monolithic and static phenomena. In this paper, we advance a framework, dubbed the Configured Culture Framework, upon which we relied to propose that: a) the heterogeneity of culture should be captured by reporting the relative standard deviation (or coefficient of variation, rσ) of subcultures within a nation, b) change in culture should be captured by the percent change of the culture per period (%Δ), and c) an average of the subcultures should be used as the country’s culture. The authors were motivated by the diversity of cultures found within each country of the world, a fact, which is most pronounced in Africa

    Eosinophil granule proteins ECP and EPX as markers for a potential early-stage inflammatory lesion in female genital schistosomiasis (FGS)

    Genital granulomas induced by Schistosoma haematobium eggs can manifest as different lesion types visible by colposcopy; rubbery papules (RP), homogenous sandy patches (HSP) and grainy sandy patches (GSP). Pronounced tissue eosinophilia is a candidate marker for active S. haematobium pathology, as viable schistosome egg granulomas often are eosinophil rich. Here it was investigated whether eosinophil granule proteins ECP (eosinophil cationic protein) and EPX (eosinophil protein-X) in urine and genital lavage can be used as markers for active FGS lesions.Uro-genital samples from 118 Malagasy women were analysed for ECP and EPX by standard sandwich avidin/biotin amplified ELISA.The women with RP lesions had significantly higher levels of ECP and EPX in both lavage and urine. Furthermore, women with RP lesions were significantly younger than those with GSP. This could indicate that RP lesions might be more recently established and thus represent an earlier inflammatory lesion stage.ECP in genital lavage might be a future tool aiding the identification of FGS pathology at a stage where reversibility remains a possibility following praziquantel treatment

    A Novel Restorative Pulmonary Valve Conduit : early Outcomes of Two Clinical Trials

    Objectives: We report the first use of a biorestorative valved conduit (Xeltis pulmonary valve-XPV) in children. Based on early follow-up data the valve design was modified; we report on the comparative performance of the two designs at 12 months post-implantation. Methods: Twelve children (six male) median age 5 (2 to 12) years and weight 17 (10 to 43) kg, had implantation of the first XPV valve design (XPV-1, group 1; 16 mm (n = 5), and 18mm (n = 7). All had had previous surgery. Based on XPV performance at 12 months, the leaflet design was modified and an additional six children (five male) with complex malformations, median age 5 (3 to 9) years, and weight 21 (14 to 29) kg underwent implantation of the new XPV (XPV-2, group 2; 18 mm in all). For both subgroups, the 12 month clinical and echocardiographic outcomes were compared. Results: All patients in both groups have completed 12 months of follow-up. All are in NYHA functional class I. Seventeen of the 18 conduits have shown no evidence of progressive stenosis, dilation or aneurysm formation. Residual gradients of >40 mm Hg were observed in three patients in group 1 due to kinking of the conduit (n = 1), and peripheral stenosis of the branch pulmonary arteries (n = 2). In group 2, one patient developed rapidly progressive stenosis of the proximal conduit anastomosis, requiring conduit replacement. Five patients in group 1 developed severe pulmonary valve regurgitation (PI) due to prolapse of valve leaflet. In contrast, only one patient in group 2 developed more than mild PI at 12 months, which was not related to leaflet prolapse. Conclusions: The XPV, a biorestorative valved conduit, demonstrated promising early clinical outcomes in humans with 17 of 18 patients being free of reintervention at 1 year. Early onset PI seen in the XPV-1 version seems to have been corrected in the XPV-2, which has led to the approval of an FDA clinical trial

    Laser cooling of a diatomic molecule

    It has been roughly three decades since laser cooling techniques produced ultracold atoms, leading to rapid advances in a vast array of fields. Unfortunately laser cooling has not yet been extended to molecules because of their complex internal structure. However, this complexity makes molecules potentially useful for many applications. For example, heteronuclear molecules possess permanent electric dipole moments which lead to long-range, tunable, anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions. The combination of the dipole-dipole interaction and the precise control over molecular degrees of freedom possible at ultracold temperatures make ultracold molecules attractive candidates for use in quantum simulation of condensed matter systems and quantum computation. Also ultracold molecules may provide unique opportunities for studying chemical dynamics and for tests of fundamental symmetries. Here we experimentally demonstrate laser cooling of the molecule strontium monofluoride (SrF). Using an optical cycling scheme requiring only three lasers, we have observed both Sisyphus and Doppler cooling forces which have substantially reduced the transverse temperature of a SrF molecular beam. Currently the only technique for producing ultracold molecules is by binding together ultracold alkali atoms through Feshbach resonance or photoassociation. By contrast, different proposed applications for ultracold molecules require a variety of molecular energy-level structures. Our method provides a new route to ultracold temperatures for molecules. In particular it bridges the gap between ultracold temperatures and the ~1 K temperatures attainable with directly cooled molecules (e.g. cryogenic buffer gas cooling or decelerated supersonic beams). Ultimately our technique should enable the production of large samples of molecules at ultracold temperatures for species that are chemically distinct from bialkalis.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

    Insilico Functional Analysis of Genome-Wide Dataset From 17,000 Individuals Identifies Candidate Malaria Resistance Genes Enriched in Malaria Pathogenic Pathways

    Recent genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of severe malaria have identified several association variants. However, much about the underlying biological functions are yet to be discovered. Here, we systematically predicted plausible candidate genes and pathways from functional analysis of severe malaria resistance GWAS summary statistics (N = 17,000) meta-analysed across 11 populations in malaria endemic regions. We applied positional mapping, expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL), chromatin interaction mapping, and gene-based association analyses to identify candidate severe malaria resistance genes. We further applied rare variant analysis to raw GWAS datasets (N = 11,000) of three malaria endemic populations including Kenya, Malawi, and Gambia and performed various population genetic structures of the identified genes in the three populations and global populations. We performed network and pathway analyses to investigate their shared biological functions. Our functional mapping analysis identified 57 genes located in the known malaria genomic loci, while our gene-based GWAS analysis identified additional 125 genes across the genome. The identified genes were significantly enriched in malaria pathogenic pathways including multiple overlapping pathways in erythrocyte-related functions, blood coagulations, ion channels, adhesion molecules, membrane signalling elements, and neuronal systems. Our population genetic analysis revealed that the minor allele frequencies (MAF) of the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) residing in the identified genes are generally higher in the three malaria endemic populations compared to global populations. Overall, our results suggest that severe malaria resistance trait is attributed to multiple genes, highlighting the possibility of harnessing new malaria therapeutics that can simultaneously target multiple malaria protective host molecular pathways
